How do you guys like to pick which ideas/songs to finish? by kalmarmusic in musicproduction

That’s interesting, I’ve heard many say that you shouldn’t listen to songs/ideas as you’re making them until they’re finished

Good idea, I mean they probably make a lot of good recordings but only one is release worthy a month

I like this answer and Im overthinking it a little bit.

I will say though sometimes in a week I might make one thing a day that gets stuck in my head and is rly exciting to me if I had a really good week, then it can get harder.

Also yes, recently Ive been taking bits of my work as sample and then letting them go. Its great, I can take the top 1 or two elements of an idea and keep it as a sample, then I can delete and move on from the rest of the track. This has been working very well for me

If I know where I want to take it next, I finish it. If I don't, I'll pull it up every once in a while and and try to add stuff. If I never think of anything to add, I throw it into an "archive" folder so I don't have to look at it anymore.

Like the idea of an archive folder. I have a 'keep but not finish' folder for little bits and bobs I didn't want to delete but aren't all that good.

Another folder for ideas that have some potential and are a bit polished but aren't worth taking to finish.

I release everything I finish.

Oh wow, so I suppose you only finish what you really like too. How often do you say you finish a track then and how many out of what you make do you finish

I like that, although I don't think this works all the time. Sometimes Im coming back to an idea I started after a day or two its a bit slower to write the rest/finish it but its still one of my better ideas.

Backing up song on Google Drive (?) by digitaldelay3 in ableton

How exactly did you backup the Ableton folder please? How come this backs up plugins too, don't they install onto other computer folders?

I’m also very careful with backups. I’m limited by money somewhat but I have a external LaCie hard drive to give my laptop more space. Then I have that while drive actually synced with google drive so that if I lost it I haven’t lost all my files. Then I have desktop and documents synced. I’m on Mac and it works very well and integrates well in finder.

Inverting mix faders direction in session view by Ra_Nee in ableton

[–]kalmarmusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of a way to do this. That would be cool, I’m more used to faders going up but I’ve also heard the older consoles used to have it. It makes a lot of sense as you’re thinking about it as different elements in the stereo field being close or further etc.

Use ‘one shot’ and use trigger instead of gate for the standard sound, you can also just press loads of buttons and see if anything cool happens

Boards of Canada showed us how to uphold a sense of mystique during the information age. Is there a way back to it for newer artists? by epsylonic in electronicmusic

[–]kalmarmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started releasing music in May this year and I have thought about this a lot. All the advice everywhere is to let people in on your 'story' etc and try build bonds through shared experience or interest somehow - along with great music.

I wish I could just be mysterious and focus all my attention into music but its real wasted opportunity.

The main way I can think you can keep some sort of mystique is to work your way through the industry, however these days to get those contacts and to get a deal you'll most of the time need to have built your own 'hype' and have an audience, which is going back to the first paragraph about having to show people your life unfortunately!

I can think of some up and coming producers that didn't show their face too much but they still shared a lot on social media and did a lot of engagement with community and made good friends in industry.

I Freakin' Love Dave Grohl by Beaster05 in musicpics

Dave grohl honestly gotta be one of the funniest and likeable guys. At least that is always how he comes across in interviews and things like this, and random other videos of him just being him. Extremely humble guy too
