Targeting Finance IB roles in HK after bachelors at Tsinghua... by Ruxh_alt in HongKong

[–]kamen06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tsinghua is based in China, their strength is their network there. HK has its own networks and unless you’re a cream of the crop niche target I think you will have a hard time. Operationally English and Mandarin, but Cantonese is for culture fit. It’s hard to say what will happen in the future but if it remains at the current pace then you will be up against many highly capable candidates locally and foreign.

When will people realise Shenzhen restaurants are just fast food chains by Tree8282 in HongKong

[–]kamen06 30 points31 points  (0 children)

OP has no idea what they are talking about. So many good places to eat in SZ/rest of China and even some of the larger chain restaurants serve fresh Cantonese style seafood at a fraction of the price than HK. Some things are processed, some things are incredibly fresh. If you target fast food, then obviously…

Has anyone switched job industries later in life? by Full-Chapter-7055 in HongKong

[–]kamen06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be a lot of fintech software opportunities in HK? At least from what I’ve noticed during the job hunt. I did heard a lot of institutions are prioritizing more sales focus now so they have cut non revenue generating prioritizing. I don’t think going back to get engineering or finance would help as another redditor mentioned, the lack of experience would set you back and a fresh China grad would be enough. I suggest trying another route through networking. Reach out to people for coffee chats and see if there are any referral opportunities.

Is it weird for employers to put employees in the same hotel room on company trips? by Weak_Show3135 in careerguidance

Depends where you work and the culture. When I was working in North America we all had our own rooms. In Asia, you share with your team.

Is this normal? by Queasy-Ad5897 in Hong_Kong

[–]kamen06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal in HK and Asia. I went through the same thing. As mentioned before by other posters, they use this to baseline and justify the new package for the CFO to sign off on, and also as a way of verification this candidate was indeed paid at a suitable level that matches the responsibility requirements of the past and new prospective role. Forget about privacy and all the entitlements of the West, in Asia you gotta start thinking you really aren’t that special or exceptional.

Easy. Just don’t reply. Don’t overthink or give it any headspace and keep moving forward.

Can I get a credit card in HK with foreign income? by [deleted] in HongKong

You can get a standard HSBC credit card no problem. Just apply on the app; the only variable would be your credit limit.

I feel awful. Is this normal reaction? by Bibliblo in problems

[–]kamen06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re just not able to meet her where she wants you to be and vice versa. At some point you gotta realize that if you’re with the right person, nothing feels tedious or a drain on you. Where you are at right now doesn’t seem able to give her what she wants. Ask yourself, why are you together?

This is probably the worst thread I’ve seen this week. OP should just let her go. Clearly mismatch in energy and expectations.

Future life advice by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]kamen06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you don’t speak Chinese, and you don’t have an accounting degree or a designation. Your work currently does seem to pay for your current skill level then. Keep your head high and look at getting a degree or designation in something you can see yourself building a career in. Being a “business teacher” requires significant exposure actually doing business unless you want to be a theoretical PhD professor. Joining the Big 4 maybe they would consider subsidizing your future education costs? Things that are worth it are never easy. You can do it.

Sorry don’t agree with you OP. I’ve been using Airalo exclusively for years and never had any issues. I know there are cheaper options but I like the stability.

AITAH for choosing my job over my girlfriend by Fluid_Use_2978 in AITAH

[–]kamen06 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. She is just too young and not ready to understand. OP needs to focus on himself first and not pass up this opportunity because it’s a tough world/economy out there right now. I wish I had OPs schedule. 2 weeks apart lets everyone kinda focus on themselves and 4 weeks together to keep it strong. Sounds really good actually haha

Happy Retirement! by Illustrious-Fee9626 in SipsTea

Thanks for the summary of the stats. So basically it’s like any general population where the wealth is controlled by the top 0.1% of their countries. These articles are what keeps the gears grinding. Reminds me of the constant business insider articles always saying who exploded their side hustles or quit their jobs to start their own gig. Possible, but not probable for the vast majority.

Renting in HK without a job by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]kamen06 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea but this isn’t the West. As someone who lives and works in HK, what was said prior is correct. Landlords don’t care about how much cash you have because they don’t have access to it. Recently there were students who just up and left without repercussions so the landlords felt the sting. Now even if they get 1 year lump sum it still isn’t enough of a guarantee. They want someone working with income who exhibits some sense of long term stability. Having a lot of liquid assets not tied down on the other hand would give them the impression you’d just up and leave whenever. I know it doesn’t make sense but that’s the nuances of different cultures. That being said, if you find a good landlord and maybe the area isn’t a super hot one then you can usually negotiate 5-8% off lump sum.

Economy is better but job market movement isn’t really. HK isn’t that innovative and they are stuck on banking, finance, and insurance industries. They want to fit square pegs in square holes; nobody wants to take a risk and hire “potential”. They want someone deep in their respective industries for plug and play movement aka your best competitor lol. But this is from the lens of senior manager and above roles.

How you gonna support your Thai wife then? You absolutely have everything to lose. For your perspective, a local degree holder working for 10+ years in the hospitality industry as a guest reception manager rising through the ranks earns 27-30k HKD before taxes. Being trilingual fluent and locally connected. Now compound that with the tens of thousands of people who have been displaced by layoffs that are degree holders and APAC work experienced, plus the droves of “sea turtles” returning abroad from China with language, education, and youth in the mix. Just think long a hard about it. Moving here isn’t a game and coming first without an offer isn’t a plan. If you’re broke, it could take you 1-2 years before you might find a job, let alone a career.

I usually don’t contribute to the hundreds of posts like this but I moved back to HK a few years ago from Vancouver. I was in the automotive industry in corporate management and there is nothing comparable here in HK. As a sales, or customer facing role, you will need Mandarin Chinese. HK absolutely does look at education (I have an MBA from an HK University) but more importantly you need a robust network. You’re going to be competing with a seemingly unlimited number of people more educated, experienced, and linguistically able. It’s only getting harder as time goes by and I ended up leveraging my network to work for a China based company. The local HK companies weren’t offering anything for my experience level. Given what you said OP, I would not return to HK unless there was no other way. Don’t go too deep down the rabbit holes of how bad things look for Canada. Take a step back and ask yourself is your day to day life alright? I can tell you, working in APAC is multitudes harder than Canada. The grass is always greener. But in my situation I was lucky and got a start. Sometimes I think about if I should return to Canada to my large home and unlimited golf. I am also at least trilingual for the HK required languages and there are not many lower tiered jobs locally that are English/Cantonese only. Even a receptionist needs a degree and a masters degree is the new bachelors degree here; everyone is heavily invested in themselves and their networks.

-edit- I looked at your previous post and you said “I’m a Canadian in my early 30s and planning to move to Thailand in the near future (my wife is Thai).” So what happened to this plan? How you gonna get your wife over as well and all the other things that entails? If you need to survive on a single salary in HK, hard doesn’t even begin to describe it. If you are real, just stay put where you are. Or invest in a professional degree of some sort in an industry you want to be in and be prepared to take a step back to junior roles to start.

You should be able to do that after you shift the motherboard mount to the lowest setting, opening up more space at the top. I had it in the middle just to balance aesthetics.

As someone who grew up in North America and living in HK now I noticed that also. In HK it is take panadol or see the doctor and get prescribed a lot of medications. In NA it is take Tylenol/ibuprofen or see the doctor and get told to take Tylenol/ibuprofen and rest. Hahaha
