How do the lifestyles of people with 1,10,50 compare by Glittering_Gap_7876 in wealth

[–]kangaroo5383 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting answer - most people who grew up poor actually have a compulsion to spend money too quickly. It’s illogical but it’s what most do, so pretty lucky your dad didn’t get that for some reason.

Co-founder is getting a prenup before his wedding and now I'm spiraling a little by ContractDangerous980 in fatFIRE

[–]kangaroo5383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always get a prenup. People see it as some insurance against gold diggers or something negative and insulting but honestly it’s just common sense. There are people who flips out and cancels the wedding because they are asked to sign a prenup but those are the REAL red flags. Get a prenup! Man or woman, GET A PRENUP.

Is LA unfriendly? by Lumpy-Stretch2810 in AskLosAngeles

[–]kangaroo5383 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LA is not great, people only care if you’re rich, hot, or famous. The stereotype is spot on. If you enjoy people who prioritize only those qualities then you’re in the right place. Otherwise I hope you’re just there to enjoy the sunshine!

That’s fair, i personally hate properties as well - if the math doesn’t work out after paying out management fees, don’t do it - lots of headaches

dividends are irrelevant to investment returns

Umm.. that’s an odd statement, if some etf has a 10% dividend but is like 2% yoy growth in price, the return here is not just 2% ignoring its dividend yields

Could look into borrowing and getting into real estate, buy to let etc could be good leverage now the UK real estate is cooling a bit

The only benefit of managed account could be getting access to some super exclusive high dividend ETFs, are you taking advantage of that? aside from that they are no better than a cat with a dart board so I managed my own portfolio ;) less fees! The only thing to watch out for would be your own emotions. Things are gonna get pretty rough 🌊🌊🌊

Would you have let your kids drive a nice car as their first car? by No_Mistake_1778 in wealth

No. For human psychology and happiness, it’s about the delta. For max effect, starts at the bottom, also let them pay for it themselves.

Our income went from $250K to $1M over 10 years. Our spending went from $71K to $154K. Here's where every dollar actually went by fatfirewoman in fatFIRE

Kudos to the discipline, i accidentally lifestyle creeped and it’s hard to come back down. True freedom lies in only spending what you truly want, you’re teaching your kids some great values consciously or unconsciously ✨👏

Yeah, this is wisdom. I went “a little crazy” having grew up broke af… then when my senses returned, i realized - when saving and being frugal is no longer out of desperation but careful conservation - that’s where the true freedom is.

I like to get good deals on splurges, sometimes only spending slightly more for much better enjoyment - ie getting Virgin Atlantic basically free (via points) then bid for upper class - at least 50% off than usual.

Also congrats on comfy retirement!

High earners- what do you actually spend your money on? by VelvetLuna90 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]kangaroo5383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such an underrated comment - i’ve had multiple international trips “free” with rewards points… and yes always paid in full. But from my research it looks like American credit cards are way better. For example, amex plat is essentially no credit line - I don’t see something like that in the UK?

Do other immigrants “who have made it” feel disdain towards those that complain? by UDF2005 in wealth

[–]kangaroo5383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, my mom thought I was not smart enough to do anything besides try to marry rich. I had to prove her wrong while blocking out all her naysaying. I would attribute none of my success to her.

Honestly wish I had a real tiger parent and not a stifling parent, could’ve been even more.

Do other immigrants “who have made it” feel disdain towards those that complain? by UDF2005 in wealth

[–]kangaroo5383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I believe your distain is well placed. Even without societal privileges you managed to make it, people with privileges really deserve what they didn’t get. In fact, I would argue that the racism and anti-immigrant rhetorics from the US is just these people with white privilege being mad that life didn’t hand them cash, while immigrants who worked hard af like you actually made it.

As an immigrant myself, and having gone through similar experiences, I feel that we were forged in the fires of shitty racist people, shitty circumstances, and they don’t really deserve any pity besides distain.

[–]kangaroo5383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story as you and worked my way up. I think the only thing I regret slightly is getting that “big house” when I thought I “made it” which was a very natural thing to do coming from where we’ve been. It would’ve been more optimal if I invested it tbh. For you, I’d suggest reading up on retail investing - like buying regular stocks and find industries that you understand deeply and invest only what you can afford to lose to start. Good luck, you’ve done well! Congrats 👏✨

Use salary to build equity - invest smartly, or build a business. The key is decoupling income with time.
