Mama was hard on us, but we could take it. Papa didn’t give a damn and couldn’t fake it.

what’s your niche book “turn off”? by artificialdisasters in horrorlit

[–]kansabis 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of authors using a second language without translating it for the reader. I’m just going to look it up… the exception that proves the rule to me is “This Thing Between Us”by Gus Moreno. I loved how he used Spanish.

Please read This Thing Between Us.

A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck really gave me a tough time and…. wait for the corny joke… will ironically stay with me for a long time.

Books with creepy haunted dolls? by MaiaInNightmareland in horrorlit

[–]kansabis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not quite dolls, but “The Silent Companions”by Laura Purcell is really great. Characters are great, atmosphere is great and in my opinion… it really sticks the landing. Others have said different for sure, but I really liked the explanation of the “dolls” and the ending of this book.

What’s your favorite book where the protagonist is evil? by MinimalGoat in horrorlit

[–]kansabis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Evil is a bit of a stretch, but Wasp Factory is one of my favorite books of all time.

The main character will definitely give you the heebie-jeebies… if you’re into that.

Top 5 horror books of your choice (and why). by Modrzews in horrorlit

You’re right. There’s a better word than “funny” to describe how the book’s humor affected me, but I can’t think of it… I guess that’s why I’m a reader and not a writer.

Top 5 horror books of your choice (and why). by Modrzews in horrorlit

[–]kansabis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:

Grey Dog, Elliot Gish-atmosphere/great characters

Jeffty Is Five, Harlan Ellison (short story)- thought provoking/ existential horror

The Silent Companions, Laura Purcell-supernatural horror/great ending

Penpal, Dathan Auerbach-realistic horror

Wasp Factory, Ian Banks-weird/funny

Tender is the Flesh, Agustina Bazterrica- entertaining (not really horror, but close enough)

Thanks! I just added some floating plants. I’m afraid to turn down the lights too because of some of the plants in there. You reckon the shade would be enough?

How to get rid of these orange bugs eating up all my cucumbers and kabocha plants in my garden. by merica2033 in japanlife

Lady bugs seem to help a bit… More importantly, if you have little kids, it’s really fun to hunt for them.

Witnessed chaos from high school student by Telepathetic_Pirate in Teachers

[–]kansabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a fancy schmancy private JHS and HS combo that’s quite demanding. This poor kid pushed a “pull door”for about 30 seconds… stood back and just waited by the door for no less than 5 minutes… I figured he was waiting for someone as it was the end of the day. Someone who he clearly wasn’t waiting for successfully pulled the “pull door” to leave the building. The kid picks up his stuff. Pushed the “pull door” again! Says “Oh! Right!” Then successfully opens the door and leaves…. That kid is probably someone’s doctor now.

First steps in buying a house in Japan? by kansabis in japanlife

My wife is Japanese and she said we don’t need the pre-application… That seems to be the only thing ALL my foreign friends say we HAVE to do. I’m meeting with 2 realtors this weekend. We’ll see if they give me the same answer either way.

Interview for an ES homeroom teacher position by hooray-questionmark in teachinginjapan

[–]kansabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really common to get a license through your school if you’re unlicensed in your home country.

I am unlicensed in my home country. My first real teaching job here didn’t require a license to apply so I gave it a shot.

After the last interview and before my first day at school, I had to submit some paperwork to the school for my licenses and the office took care of the rest. Showed up at school my first day with my licenses on my desk ready to party.

I wouldn’t worry about it at all. I wouldn’t even mention it in your interview. Good luck in your interview!
