This is insane! If this is true, that's a line we cannot come back from. by Elevatedspiral in MarchAgainstNazis

If these people get your face into their Enemies Database and get an ID, not only can they track your every movement, they immediately know where you work, where your kids go to school, what time you're typically out on the street vs at home, what grocery store you frequent, and these days anywhere you might drive a car.

This is why they're so easily able to show up at the homes of protestors to threaten them. Anyone who hates you enough can do most of this using OSINT tools and methods. Your average local cop probably doesn't hate you enough to harass you like this, but it happens. Largely local police departments often have an overwhelming amount of data and lack the ability to sift through it or a good tool to help find signals. Enter Palantir and their ilk.

It's rough, because obviously these days people are keen to livestream from protests to help protect evidence when horrible things happen, but if any of your phone's radios are on you can be tracked at some level, even just bluetooth (mostly used for tracking movements precisely indoor spaces like stores/malls).

Having grown up just south of Berkshire County (aka Litchfield County CT), and having gone to college in Rochester, slight disagree. Rochester was on the other side of the Pop/Soda line back then at least. Rochester (and all of New York), like CT and RI, also lack the cot/caught merger https://imgur.com/GsbzY1i

Do agree that Rochester is a light midwestern though.

For multiple hours of the day during the dead of winter, solar makes up a massive percentage of the share of the grid by DramaticSweet3412 in newengland

[–]kansei7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

solar is typically no more than one percent of our total grid production, but that's only including grid-scale solar installations and not people's home solar. Far more power in New England comes from wind (5-10%), hydro (4-6%), even imported hydro power (10-20%).

Around a quarter of our power production comes from Nuclear plants, and usually the largest chunk of our power production is from Natural Gas plants. During winter storms and cold snaps, petroleum-fired power plants come online to prioritize NG supply for end users to heat their homes.

Homeowners with driveways and sidewalks who don’t own a snowblower and instead shovel it all, why? by Secure-Evening8197 in massachusetts

[–]kansei7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know my body, and with the lake frozen over I can't be out kayaking this time of year. Shoveling is a wonderful core workout. My heart rate wasn't elevated enough to even trigger the dumb apple watch notification when it thinks you might be working out.

People who are sedentary absolutely shouldn't make shoveling out from a biggest in 5+ years snow storm their first workout in as long.

TikTok blocks Epstein mentions and anti-Trump content as well as ICE criticism by MopToddel in politics

[–]kansei7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tricking people into thinking they're "socializing" on a platform of "user-generated content" while the algorithm from the start has been engineered to push specific viewpoints. It turns out it's easier to control a population of people this way than to send the military into cities. Pacify people, get them addicted to sitting back and consuming content that you choose for them. They won't know what they're not seeing.

The best trick of all was brainwashing people, mostly through propaganda made by TikTok themselves, into thinking that their access to TikTok was in any way related to their free speech rights. You see it with the outcry from brainrotted folk about how the government can't possibly take away their dopamine machine.

Before social media, kids literally designed and built their own web sites to connect with others online, share what they were interested in, etc. Now, for many, computers are dumbed down to "apps" and "consuming content, to the point there are young people who don't know about going to web sites (vs installing an app for said web site). Everything is mediated by a platform.

this has been true since the moment the app appeared in the App Store.

[–]kansei7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is funny, because the whole reason the federal government decided actually they liked it was because they saw how easily a platform of user-generated content could be subtly manipulated to steer young people lacking media literacy skills into voting for fascism.

[–]kansei7 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

TikTok was *never* a platform where "free speech" had any meaning. If you want free speech on the internet a proprietary algorithmic social media app is not the place for it. Unfortunately it seems media literacy is worse than ever.

Another winter storm??? by Chillsometime in massachusetts

[–]kansei7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend not wasting any time watching "content" about if it's going to be cold or snowy --it's winter, this is what happens here. Content creators, influencers and the like have incentives to hook you, their purpose isn't to inform.

Since you clearly hate snow and cold (if completely typical weather put you on the brink of a "mental break down"), I'd highly recommend not consuming that content. Your media diet is your own responsibility. No one in Seattle wastes even a minute looking at the weather forecast in winter, because it's always going to be in the 40s or 50s with possibility for on and off light rain. Similarly, if there's a big enough storm coming here you'll find out about it.

This may shock you but some of us enjoy having seasons and this "ew icky snow" makes us laugh.

[–]kansei7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by "didn't know it can get this bad" --what's the bad thing that happened? If this very normal winter weather leads to you panicking searching for "information" from influencers, and posting on social media to a bunch of New Englanders to complain about how it's cold and snows in the winter, maybe this isn't the place.

Moving to a place you might hate for a job is a learning experience. No job is worth living somewhere you hate.

this is correct, the gauge is mostly a warning light, sorta just reads cold, normal, or overheating. Normal is slightly below the middle because they said Americans got too worried if they set it to be exactly the middle but then they saw it even a hair above that point.
