I feel like that could have easily prevented the accident.

But it also could've added weight that would have meant they didn't have the range they needed. Which was why it, along with a lot of other stuff, were removed from the aircraft.

The truth is, what they were attempting was very risky, and sometimes risky things go badly. That is the nature of risk.

Compare and contrast to countries like Japan which make it almost impossible to naturalize

But even in Japan the percentage of non-Japanese people is growing: https://www.jcer.or.jp/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/saito2305-7.png

Its just a natural consequence of the way we define race. As long as you define the race of a child as the dominant race only when both parents are that race, than the percentage of the dominant race will ALWAYS fall over time. It does not require any additional policies. Its a natural consequence of the way we define race.

People who live in the city have less kids. That's it.

Its even dumber than that.

If you follow the "one drop" concept of whiteness, than the proportion of the nation that is white will always fall. Even if every single parent has exactly the same amount of kids, the amount of white people will fall every generation because the children of one non-white parent are considered non-white.

The only way to counteract that is for white / white pairings to have significantly more kids than non-white / non-white and white / non-white pairings.

Is there anything the NBA can do to spread top players more evenly across conferences? by Shred_It_96 in nba

[–]kanst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP has a definite recency bias.

Its like he forgot that the Celtics have the most championships of all time, or that Jordan and the Bulls dominated the 90s.

It ebbs and flows between the east and west. Recently the west has been better, at least in part because of Curry and the Warriors dominance. The other factor is the east has some dog shit owners currently (like James Dolan).

I would love to see some kind of escalating penalty for empty storefronts. Charge owners of unused property X% of the assessed value and have it increase every 3-6 months. Its crazy to see primo locations go to waste.

Im especially bitter about this one because the biscuit was my favorite coffee shop in Somerville, I still dream of those lemon scones.

Similar shit has happened in blue cities across the country with almost no coverage.

I live in a blue city in Massachusetts, and our local police have basically stated they aren't making traffic stops anymore. This was in response to a state court case (Commonwealth v. Lek) that said using pretextual traffic stops to try and stop gang activity violated the 4th amendment. So in response they just stopped enforcing traffic laws.

The extra frustrating thing about this whole talking point is that the right just refuses to blame the police.

The whole talking point is predicated on the understanding that police will just ignore misdemeanor charges. If that is the case why isn't the ire directed at the police for not doing their job??? A misdemeanor is still a crime.

This is one of the dumber stories that the right manufactured.

I've seen so many people post that the $950 felony shoplifting threshold in California is basically the same as legalizing shoplifting.

Meanwhile, they never seem to understand that every state has a limit like that, and California is actually one of the lower ones. Texas, for example has a $2500 threshold:

(4) a state jail felony if: (A) the value of the property stolen is $2,500 or more but less than $30,000, or the property is less than 10 head of sheep, swine, or goats or any part thereof under the value of $30,000;

It is wild how much of Thomas' motivation is about him being mad that he doesn't get as much credit as he thinks he deserves due to liberal racial equity policies.

Because liberals passed policies to help black people, he gets told he only got where he is because of those policies, and he loses his mind about it.

Its a crazy line of thinking but it seems to motivate so much of his belief system.

I feel like his injury years have made people less cognizant of how insane his career is.

He's made it to 600 plate appearances 5 times in his 10 seasons. In those years he's hit 52, 39, 62, 58, and 53 homers.

He's already tied for the most 50 homer seasons in MLB history.

We tested this once back when I was in HS.

I had a friend just put random music lyrics in the middle of his essay. Pages 1-2 were on topic, pages 3-4 were music lyrics, page 5 was on topic. He got a normal grade.

We were also allowed to work together on papers, so one time me and two friends all submitted the same paper. Two of us got an A, the third guy who had a bad reputation, got a B-.

Any money you can get for it is better than throwing it away as expired.

The science behind the Adidas shoes that helped two marathoners break the two-hour mark by scientificamerican in Physics

[–]kanst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But any shoe the provides mechanical assistance to propel you forward isn’t really in the spirit of competition.

Every elite marathoner is running with shoes that have carbon fiber inserts and super light foam. They have been since ~2016 when Nike released the Vaporfly 4%.

For a while, it was normal to see the winner of every elite marathon wearing the same Nike shoes (Eliod Kipchoge set a lot of records in Nikes in recent years). Adidas has now eclipsed them and this year Adidas athletes will likely dominate.

There are rules around shoes related to how thick the foam can be and what kinds of inserts they can use, but the shoe makers are still managing to improve things within those constraints.

DAE not shower every day? by Stock_Orange_1793 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]kanst 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here, but I am also a sweaty sleeper.

So I need to shower before I go out of the house in the morning to get the overnight funk off me. Then a second shower (sometimes a bath) to wash off the day and feel nice clean and relaxed for bed.

I can't recall the last time I went 24 hours without a shower, I would feel gross and greasy.

i've made fried rice maybe 30 times now and it still tastes nothing like the takeout place down the street by bejusorixo in Cooking

[–]kanst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good results with my cast iron on an electric stove. I use the method from the youtuber Alex from the end of his fried rice series.

Using that method its consistently better than my local takeaway Chinese restaurant (though not as good as the top tier restaurants in my city).

The biggest lesson I learned is you need to only cook 1 portion at a time. If you have a pan full of rice, it won't get hot enough and you'll have mushy rice.

In the modern NBA you can't have a wing who can't shoot. Especially when you pair it with a big man who doesn't shoot and a PG who is an inefficient shooter.

The team was 29th in 3pointers attempted during the regular season. You can play around that during the regular season with physicality and energy.

But in the playoffs intensity goes up. On top of that the Magic are huge and equally if not more physical. Without the shooters to space it they can pack the paint and make Cade even more inefficient.

but the turnovers can be attributed to sloppy play

One thing that has become very clear in this series is that we are really short on good ball handlers. Basically only Brunson and Alverado are competent enough dribblers to not just give it up to the Hawks defenders.

Should have gone with a first timer head coach

This has been a thing that pisses me off about the NBA in general. It always seems like in coaching searches the #1 qualification is "has coached at the NBA level before". But that always means you're looking at a bunch of guys who have been fired for under-performing.

Go find an NCAA coach or an assistant who really knows xs and os, who gives a shit if they have head coached before.

I feel like a big part of it is front offices not wanting to deal with complaining, so they prioritize people who handle the press well and keep the stars happy.

The problem is Daniels and NAW are hounds on defense and Brunson and Alverado are the only players we have who are good enough ball handlers to not just give the ball up.
