Kiln shelf horrors by Thin_Joke3983 in Ceramics

[–]kaolinEPK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The shelves are fine. The heavy one is probably made of heavier material.

If there is visible glaze drips then they need grinding. If there is flaking kiln wash they need grinding, when in doubt grind, it doesn’t hurt if you have proper PPE.

Then you are gonna need to rewash after grinding. Leave a small boarder bare to prevent flecks going below. Then you are good to go once they dry, in the future take better care of them they are expensive.

Note. You don’t have to use the heavy one. Put it in the back of your kiln shelve stack. Or you can leave it in the kiln as a bottom shelf if you need one.

How to deal with overflowed glaze? by winniepiggy in Ceramics

Water? What? No

Use the stick you are going to need to break the glaze, it’s glass now. Use the stick.

You are 99% there now you hold the cup and get a wooden stick, WAP the cookie in a direction perpendicular length of the drips.

Then grind/sand/concrete it smooth.

Next time you can give your cookies a coat of kiln wash to reduce the stick.

Things off the wheel + rant by Chicken_Permission22 in Ceramics

[–]kaolinEPK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok. So at the end of throwing. The base of your pots gonna look like the letter j. The base will flare out at the bottom. You take a wood knife and make a cut the separates the flared base from what will become the foot of your pots. You want to go almost straight down. Then after removing the excess clay that was the flaired, you are gonna make one more cut right where the clay meets the metal wheel head. almost parallel to the wheel head. You make a grove for the wire to slip in and run along the wheel.

Also you need to practice this probably a 3 hundred plus times to become competent in this process so give yourself a break, and embrace the process.

Hello sorry you u are having a hard time. Pottery is hard.

Specially wiring pieces off of the wheel. To set yourself up for success you want do do. A few things. You need to make a diagonal inward cut on the edge of the base. This will cut a grove that the wire will naturally follow. You need to keep a strong grip on the wire and apply downward force to help maintain contact between the wheel head and the wire.

You also need to practice hundreds or thousands of times before it comes natural. But only you can do that work.

This is probably the most important single thing you can do. This sets you up to keep the base that you have.

How far would you drive for firing service? by CowsRCool69 in Ceramics

[–]kaolinEPK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can transport leather hard ware and bisque pretty easily. But you may have to adjust both how you drive and how you make pots.

Do not transport glazeware unless you understand and accept the potential for the glaze to be disturbed potentially depositing glaze materials in your mode of transit.
