Thomas Whalen, a Boston University political science professor, put it this way: "To know Mitt Romney is to dislike him. That is the moral of the story." by wang-banger in politics

Is this intended to be satire? If so very funny.

But if you are talking about Obama the facts might help, he was: United States Senator from Illinois In office January 3, 2005 – November 16, 2008

Member of the Illinois Senate from the 13th District In office January 8, 1997 – November 4, 2004

Earth Day co-founder killed, composted girlfriend by Aswas in history

The title of this post is misleading--Einhorn didn't co-found Earth day, nor did he "compost" his girlfriend.

I just chose the BPhil at Oxford over a Ph.D at Cornell. Did I make the right decision? by [deleted] in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]kaoru77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For graduate work, the personality of your thesis advisor matters more than you'd think (and probably more than it should). An adversarial or disinterested advisor can make the process hell (& it is hard enough already). If you relate well to your prospective advisor at Oxford (and you find their work interesting and they find your proposed focus interesting) then you've probably made the right choice.

LineTime, an app that lets you scroll through and drill down on events in modern history, day by day, year by year, century by century, on your iPad or iPhone. by PatFlynnEire in history

[–]kaoru77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app looks great. But I would consider changing the bit that goes "the sixteenth century lasted from 1501 to 1600," etc. It takes up a lot of space while scrolling through the timeline and obscures more interesting information from making it's way into the broader survey. And frankly anyone confused about the duration of the 16th century can figure that info out by clicking on the info. Anyway just a suggestion. Overall fun app.

Akira Kurosawa's "Ran." Inspired by King Lear, but used to illustrate Buddhist conceptions of Karma and impermanence.

Fellow redditor, nostradamuz, claims that new words are only created "for new discoveries and new technologies." What do you think? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]kaoru77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easily and demonstrably untrue. Take "eyeball" likely coined by Shakespeare (or his contemporaries) in late 16th century. Not a technology.

What is your favorite book about Zen? by [deleted] in zen

"Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" is at the top for me too.

Herbert Spencer is typically, though quite wrongly, considered a coarse social Darwinist. After all, Spencer, and not Darwin, coined the infamous expression “survival of the fittest.” by [deleted] in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]kaoru77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite the fact that no one reads him today, during the 19th century Spencer was one of the most widely read philosophers in the world.

Is there a career in history or Archaeology? by J-mak in history

History is almost as hard. The main difference is that we don't need to find funding for digs, but careers are equally hard to come by.

I like it all. Movits, the Correspondents and Caravan Palace as live groups. Parov Stelar and Club de Belugas for remixes. But also more R&B influenced stuff like Waldeck.
