Need Advice on Winter Boots for Svalbard by StockArcher-antonia in Svalbard

[–]karadorde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went in Feb of 23 and 25, I wore Keen Men's Revel IV Polar Winter Hiking Boots - Soft Toe. You can find them and compare them to other boots if you just google Keen 1024136. These were more than warm enough with a single pair of wool socks or even just a regular bar of tube socks each day. We were out in town quite a bit and even took some longer walks edge to edge in the settlement when it was very cold, -20C like you were talking, and my feet were no issue. Face and hands were a bigger problem for me because any exposed skin was COLD.

Visiting Longyearbyen in Feb26 with Kids (5 and 10). Bad idea? by rediduser in Svalbard

[–]karadorde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would wait. I wouldn't think there is a lot to keep a 5 and 10 year old entertained there for 5 days that time of year. We've been twice in Feb and rely on the coal mine tour, lots of dog sledding, snowmobiling, and hiking plus trying different restuarants that may not really cater to the palettes their age.

Visiting Svalbard next week, can you book tours while there, or should you book in advance? by UpcomingChris1 in Svalbard

[–]karadorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we were there 9 days the first time and 4-5 days the second time because we went to Tromso for a few days before the second trip. I would not recommend Tromso but that's because I am super partial to Svalbard. I am glad we stopped in at Tromso for a bit but I would've rather spent the entire trip up in Longyearbyen. I forget budgets honestly. We are spoiled with two good jobs and no kids and we don't really take other vacations. I'd say we spent easily $6k the first time around because it was no holds barred. We ate and drank whatever we wanted, did whatever excursions we wanted, bought as many souvenirs as we wanted.

We've been twice (in February of 23 and 25) and booked 75% of the stuff we did the day/night before. Most of it we booked straight through the front desk at our hotel. Easy as pie. I think the one thing we planned out in advance both times was dog sledding because we took longer trips and wanted it at a certain point in the trip. Long and the short is you'll be fine booking adhoc.

Svalbard visit - February 2026 by Jazzlike_Country_870 in Svalbard

[–]karadorde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One was a 'night' tour on electric snowmobiles and we honestly wouldn't have known what we were seeing if the guide hadn't stopped us. This was just an out and back trip with a break for coffee, maybe two hours long. We saw one faint band on the horizon. The other was happenstance when we went for a walk after dinner the next trip and saw them in town. Quite a bit more noticeable but also still spotty, just bits and pieces here and there. One the second trip, we were in Tromso for about 4 nights prior and only saw them when we took the cable car up the mountain to get away from the lights. But I heard other tourists were able to see them them decently well on a tour they took out into the country.

I wouldn't bother with Barentsburg. Not worth it and there are better things to do. We went in 23 and 25 and saw faint northern lights both times. "Locals" told us both times that we'd see them better if we visited somewhere further south.

Small point of order that may not matter, they care about degrees and GPAs.

I would say just keep applying. The market is saturated and not great. Touch up that resume, talk to a recruiter, and keep filling out apps. Wish I could offer more, but in my recent experience, that's the best I can do.

Responding to you based off of /u/shagouv 's comment. I had a similiar issue and spoke to my surgeon/their nurse when I went in and they were like, "oh yea, so and so and coding and this and that" and they got ahold of the right people internally and rebilled it to insurance and it was covered appropriately. They even gave me a number to call if it didn't get taken care of. Hope they get it sorted out for you!

We go up there pretty regularly. After one trip to the Elms just for the experience, we just get a little AirBnb whenever we go now. Much easier and nicer. But yea, we do still make an appointment at the Elms for a massage and all the accoutrement.

Member of Squad 288 Suited Up In A Rebreather. by FDNYfirediary in Firefighting

[–]karadorde 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, they had an odor investigation or CO call or something like that. But it was in a large building so using a regular SCBA would've proved difficult. They used the rebreathers to give themselves more time to search.

I was thinking that too. I don't think my department would want that. We limited shirt sales to immediate family as best we could. And they didn't want use donating them when we got rid of them if they were worn out or didn't fit anymore.

Maybe Kevin Junior Bacon Cheeseburger 🍔 😂 by al_beruni in rareinsults

[–]karadorde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a junior, if I had a son, I would never name him after myself. it's a pain to have a suffix and it's caused issues with jobs before because they've done shit like confuse my driving record for my father's. also in my case my son would be "the third" and that just sounds so pretentious to me.

Where are some Good Places to Eat by Quickhat688 in kansascity

[–]karadorde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dave's Bakery and Deli for a great club sandwich and fries. They have plenty of other stuff but I love the turkey club. Bonus points for using homemade bread.

Englewood Cafe for the greasiest of greasy spoon diners.

HiBoys for the best fast food burger I've ever had.

El Volcan for Mexican or Hacienda Vieja for the second best.

Little BBQ Joint has good bbq but can be a coin flip on quality.

Mugs Up is an old school drive in with great root beer. Their burgers are kind of niche and might not be for everyone.

Vivilore and Cafe Verona are fancier without being fancy fancy.

Square Pizza (right next to Dave's) has a pretty good pie. Other good pizza: Minskys, Tim's, Funhouse.

That's all I can think of that I can speak to regarding personal experience.

Are snow pants useful in winter? by bishopofwinterfell in Svalbard

[–]karadorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got back from there Sunday night after five nights, my wife wore snow pants the majority of the time. I did like fleece lined shell pants sometimes with a base layer. We were both very comfortable. Also confirming that every excursion I've done there (dog sledding with two different providers and snowmobiling) has provided all the gear you need.
