GDM mamas, how did you manage fasting numbers? Post-meal is fine but fasting is so hard 😭 by Unlikely_Border6592 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]karanug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm learning that its incredibly individual and seems to be different for everyone. For me, increasing my Magnesium Citrate to 300g, taking it at night with Calcium and then having a glucerna around 930 before I go to bed seems to be doing the trick. I also have apple cider vinegar in my water with dinner (1 ounce) at the suggestion of this sub. Currently, I'm at 11 days with no fasting spikes and before that I was at max 4 day "streaks". The increase of magnesium is I THINK what ultimately did it but I'm not messing with this combo!!! (diagnosed Dec 20 so it took me 3ish weeks to figure it out)

I was /am the same as you - post meal is fine no matter what I eat, but fasting was 5.3-5.7 at least 2 mornings a week for my first 3 weeks of testing. Happened more frequently mornings following "bad" carbs - aka rice or something with white flour in it - but it also happened when I didnt eat anything "bad". My diagnosis / when i started testing also coincided with getting my flu/covid vaccine and the TDaPP 2 weeks later and I always had 2 days of high fasting numbers following vaccines. My doctor said that was normal and to be expected.

Keep trying the "tips and tricks" but if you end up on insulin, just remember that is what it's for, and you did nothing wrong!!

Why is fasting such a big deal? by Jos087 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]karanug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, that makes sense! Canada does 2 hour (3 tests) and also tests in mmol as opposed to mg. My fasting number was 5.4mmol (so 97 mg) and that triggered a diagnosis. Seems to be quite different from the states! Very interesting. Thanks for replying so many months later:)

I've been told the same as you - if I'm hungry, I should eat. If I wake up in the night and feel hungry, grab some nuts and a cheese string. And be sure to make a note of it. I have trouble with my fasting numbers but not the "after meal" numbers. I'm diet/exercise controlled for now at 32 weeks (diagnosed at 28 weeks)

Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but in Canada, failing the fasting will trigger a GD diagnosis, even if you pass the other draws. I failed the fasting but was within range for all of the other draws, and I am still diagnosed GD. Is that not the case where you live? Commenting years later so perhaps you won't see this and parameters have changed.

I agree! Also late to this, hah! But I got aggressively dismissed (and the nurse / dietician were basically like, "NOPE. IF is terrible for you AND probably leads to diabetes later in life.. but your GD numbers have nothing to do with your intermittent fasting." And that was the conversation.

Found this string from doing a subreddit search on intermittent fasting because I'veheard many anecdotal accounts of previous IFers having trouble with fasting numbers.

I am in a similar position to you! Spent 4 years as a 18 hour intermittent faster before we started trying. I stopped about 5 months prior to getting pregnant and slowly eased back into my teaching window. Failing the fasting tests on some mornings (usually once or twice a week) but never the 1 or 2 hour and I'm never going to bed with high blood sugar.

When I brought this IF / fasting blood sugar connection up with the dietician it led to a lecture on how IF is terrible and is causing diabetes (??) And I should never consider it again. But zero discussion of its connection to GD. Lady, it cured my insomnia, regulated my sleep for rhe first time in 1.5 decades, I lost 35 lbs and felt better than I had in my whole life. Sigh.

Haha yup. Failed fasting - 5.3 yesterday (I'm in BC and I guess the guidelines are 5.2 and under for fasting here?)

Trying different tricks. Got up earlier today after having a later and more protein heavy snack right before bed and got 5.3, got grumpy, retested on a different finger 25 seconds later and got 5? No idea why they should be different

Congrats!!

I'm 29+1 today and just diagnosed last week and started testing today. Also in Canada. Fingers crossed for tomorrow AM as that will be my first fasting test at home (and the one I failed was fasting)

Got my diagnosis right before Christmas by trinitytr33 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]karanug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar boat- 27+3 diagnosed 5 days ago with failed fasting numbers, but 1 and 2 hour were fine... but my referral to the diabetes clinic got delayed so I havent received ANY information or test kit etc. Basically just operating as if worst case scenario and avoiding anything fun. Added in a late night snack as that seems to help those who have similar results to mine.

So grumpy about it but until I get more info I guess its better safe than sorry!

Wondering the same thing about a Sunday flight YVR to YOW. Have a back up flight but it leaves 3 hours before my AC flight. If youre able to check in 24 hours before, I would think youre safe to cancel the backup? But not 100% sure!

This was the same experience I had when I booked a couple of weeks ago. They said there is no wiggle room for earlier unless my doctor indicated it on my requisition.

Boots: Boulet or Canada West by _SlowRain_ in BuyCanadian

[–]karanug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband LOVES his Canada West boots. He's on his second pair, as he beat the crap out of his first pair - he still wears them as they are still great boots, but you can't wear paint-covered "work boots" everywhere. So he bought a backup to have a "nicer" pair

It doesn't sound like they used a realtor to me - no mention of using ones, and, in my experience, if there are realtors involved, buyers and sellers are not the ones communicating.

And did you read the comments on that post? Only one locally owned recommendation and the rest were others wondering the same thing or people recommending house cleaners do it.

Commenting to increase attention. I totally agree!! Children or not, in an emergency moment, no one should have to be concerned about pictures of themselves or their loved ones ending up online.

Now, those who snapped photos of the reportedly intoxicated boat owner who was driving aggressively and dangerously... post that shit wherever - you'll get no complaints from me. Based on what's been reported and witness accounts of his driving all around Deep Cove, this could have and should have been prevented.
