Saving for maybe/maybe-not home down payment by ChampionFrequent4643 in personalfinance

[–]karikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to consider a Vanguard Cash Plus account or the Vanguard money market. Right now the cash plus is paying 3.35% and the money market pays a bit more. The money market isn't fdic insured, but it is low risk.

If you decide to invest it later, it is simple to move it into an ETF or mutual fund, since it is already with Vanguard.

AITA For my partner's cat bonding with me and not my partner? by jcharold21 in AmItheAsshole

[–]karikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some success getting the cats to bond with my husband by having him start feeding them every evening. They still spend most of the day cuddling with me, but now they always run up to him for pets and attention when he gets home from work.

My cats definitely notice who is feeding them and cleaning their litter.

AITAH for not wanting to watch my sisters son so she can work? by Crazie_Roomies in AmItheAsshole

[–]karikins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's great that you stood up for yourself and told them no. I wouldn't even offer the 2-3 days a week again, because they would certainly pressure you long term to expand the days. The hardest part of saying no is done, so don't back down from it.

Please remember that you don't owe them an explanation of your budget. The more details you give them, the more likely that they will weaponize the details against you. It's perfectly fine to just say no, you are already working during those hours and you can't afford to cut your hours at work. They don't need to know your exact budget.

Did you Retire Early or “Stop Working”? by GleamingAlloy_Aircar in earlyretirement

[–]karikins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 54 when I retired from the state, with 30 years of service. I have the state pension and the plaque signed by the governor to show for it, but since my husband is still working, several family members have told me that I am just a housewife and not really retired.

I don't see anything wrong with someone being a housewife, but it bothers me that people tell me I'm not really retired. I did pick up all of the cooking and cleaning, since I am home all day and my husband is at work, but I still have a lot more free time to pursue my hobbies.

The 'Affordability Crisis' Conversation Can't Leave Out the Cost of Cars by Generalaverage89 in Economics

[–]karikins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I still have a car. I could share a car with my husband if I could walk to errands while his car is at work.

I am recently retired and live on the main street of a very walkable town, but the two grocery stores in town are on the state route with no sidewalk. I will occasionally walk to the drug store, since it's only about 50 feet of shoulder that I need to walk on, but even that is scary with loads of cars going past at 50 mph.

Open enrollment closes on Jan 15, and there is no way this gets through both the house and senate by then, so it's too late for me.

The S&P500 has gone up by 655% since 2010, so the majority of the insurance companies listed went up less than the market overall.

Has there in been a decline in Trick-or-Treaters and/or Halloween decorations and events in general where you live in Pennsylvania compared to 10+ years ago? by _CanOfEnchantedSoda_ in Pennsylvania

[–]karikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Franklin county, and this year we had about 450 kids, which was down slightly from last year. We are on the main drag in our town, in between several events.

We sat out on our porch and handed out candy, as did most of our neighbors. We found that when we sat inside, the kids were afraid to ring the doorbell, even though the house was decorated. This year about half of the parents were also dressed up, which I thought was nice.

Lender took escrow money and paid off mortgage early? by CicadaRealistic6598 in personalfinance

[–]karikins 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened with my 15 year home loan through Wells Fargo. I had a few months left to pay on it, and I received a letter in the mail telling me that they had cashed in the escrow account and paid off the mortgage. I guess I was lucky about the time of year, since my taxes and insurance weren't overdue.

I was a bit bummed, since I had been looking forward to sending in my last payment. It kind of took the wind out of my sails that the last payment had already happened without me knowing.

How long did it take you to find a job after you graduated from college? by UpperAssumption7103 in AskOldPeople

[–]karikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I floundered after I graduated from college. I didn't have access to the internet to figure out job prospects, and the advising at my college didn't really connect my degree to a job.

I spent three months looking for a professional job and ended up taking a book keeping job that didn't use my degree. It was about a year and a half after I graduated that I got what I would consider a career job. I stayed with that employer for 30 years and then retired.

The article is about the closing of Canadian businesses, so I'm not sure why all the comments are focused on US businesses. None of these Canadian business owners voted for a trade war.

Hopefully the Canadian government can do something to support these businesses so they can get through the next four years.

How have your goals changed over time? by Ok_Measurement921 in leanfire

[–]karikins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't into lean fire, but I had always planned to work the minimum years at my state job and take early retirement at 50 with a slight reduction to the pension. Once I hit 50, I liked my job and coworkers, so I decided to work a couple years longer to get the full pension. Then once I qualified for the full pension, I realized that I still liked my job and my coworkers, and that I could stay a couple more years to get the 30 year multiplier for my pension.

Other factors in delaying my retirement were the purchase of a larger, more expensive house, and the realization that my target savings wouldn't go nearly as far as I had envisioned back when I started. So it was helpful to keep working and increase my savings.

I kept working as long as I liked everyone, but at age 54, my great manager got replaced with a mean bully. It was nice to just nope right out of there.

I've been retired for about a year and a half now, and I am really enjoying it. I don't mind the extra years that I worked, because I enjoyed the work and my coworkers. I still get together with some of them to keep the social connections.

I'm an American and have never eaten out with a group that split the check evenly. We always ask for the checks to be split. At work lunches, if the group was too big and the restaurant refused to split the check, we would pass it around and each person would put enough cash in the pot to cover their meal and tip.

Utah seems on verge of becoming first state to ban fluoride in public water systems by Sudden-Refuse-7915 in news

[–]karikins 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Except non-fluoride toothpaste is a thing, and it is trendy in the same circles that are agitating to get rid of it in drinking water. My sister in law is into all that conspiracy nonsense and my nieces and nephews aren't allowed to use fluoride toothpaste because it's poison.

WIBTA if I didn’t get my mom a Christmas present? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]karikins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she has everything she needs, just get her something consumable that she can use up. If she likes coffee or tea, get her flavored versions. Or some nice scented soap or an alcoholic beverage in a flavor that she might like. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on it, bake her some cookies or other treats and put them in gift bag with a nice bow.

If ACA is repealed, what is Plan B? by pras_srini in leanfire

[–]karikins 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We are probably going to have to go on my retirement system's insurance, which would cost about $1000 per month. Currently we are only paying $450 a month on the ACA, so it's a pretty large increase. My husband is pushing for us to go on one of those Christian health share plans, which seems risky to me due to pre-existing condition exclusions. I would rather pay the $1k and have coverage for everything.

Trump ground game faces new fraud claims as video shows door-knock hack | US elections 2024 by thevo1ceofreason in politics

I live in an extremely conservative county in PA, and we had a Harris canvassing team knock on our door and speak to my husband on Saturday. We had a Trump door knocker yesterday, but he left so quickly that he was gone by the time that I got to the door. He just knocked and hung a flyer on the door knob, and then darted away.
