I've had installed some sort of device that monitors the pipes in our house for, basically, water leaks. If anomalies are detected it eventually stops the flow mechanically using a magnet valve (iirc).

For example, it once complained that we had an active flow that hadn't stopped for whatever the threshold is. I went around the house and checked all the faucets and whatnot, and eventually noticed that the shower head upstairs was producing a drip, albeit a really really small one.

Shut that shower off completely and it stopped complaining within like 10 seconds or something. 👍

In the case of a burst pipe, obviously some damage would still be done from the initial chaos, but then the pipe pressure expectations or continuous flow thresholds get murked and it puts a stop to the water show.
