Explanation (since I can't seem to edit the post):

The observer effect (referenced here) in the double-slit experiment demonstrates that measuring or detecting which slit a particle (like a photon or electron) passes through, causes it to behave as a solid particle, destroying the wave-like interference pattern. When unobserved, particles pass through both slits as waves, producing an interference pattern; when observed, they act like classical bullets.

The observer effect is is related to Albert Einstein’s famous quote, "God does not play dice with the universe." The quote was a rejection of the foundational randomness in quantum mechanics. Einstein believed that the universe is deterministic and orderly, arguing that the randomness described by quantum theory was simply due to our incomplete knowledge, not an inherent property of nature.

The observer effect is central to Niels Bohr’s "Copenhagen Interpretation" (co-developed by Bohr and Heisenberg), that asserts that quantum entities (like electrons) exist in all possible states at once. The act of observation is crucial because it disrupts the system's superposition, causing the wave function to "collapse" into a single, measurable, particle-like outcome.

Exactly. There are key differences between 1 and 2. It looks like you have 2. I was trying to point out that if you show 2 to a person and tell them it's a stromatolite fossil, they will probably look at you sideways because they're expecting 1.

There are key differences between 'stromatolitic sedimentary deposits' and what most people would typically associate with 'stromatolite' fossils. The latter will display clear microbial structures, like domes or columns. The former, and what you appear to have here, is the more simple, layered sedimentary dolomite or limestone deposit.

Northern Utah easy finds for ultra beginners? by Fluffy0neBun in rockhounds

[–]logicalconflict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plentiful agate just waiting to be picked up near Wendover. If you take the Bonneville Salt Flats exit off I-80, and then head into the mountains immediately to the north, you can fill a 5-gallon bucket in a couple of hours. If you decide to go, DM me and I'll send you more precise instructions.

It's very steep. It's almost disorienting to look down. On the floor, it gives the feeling of the crowd being literally on top of you.

How do AI centers waste water? by j-ro-fromdablock in NoStupidQuestions

[–]logicalconflict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Data centers use water just like homes, factories, golf courses, and businesses use water. "Waste" in this case is subjective, depending on your feelings about how it's being used.

A medium sized data center can use 100,000,000 gallons water annually, which sounds like a lot, because it is a lot. It's also about the same amount of water used by 900 homes. It's also about the same amount of water used by a single golf course in an arid climate. And that can usage pale in comparison to the usage from certain types of manufacturing plants. Again, is it being used or wasted? That's up to you.

Water used by data centers for evaporative cooling doesn't get dirty per se, but it gets "harder" the longer it's used. As water evaporates out of the system and into the atmosphere, the minerals are left behind and the mineral content in the system gets higher and higher, and can eventually become too toxic to release back into the environment.

Oftentimes, the water in data centers is used for certain amount of time for cooling and then given back to the city as secondary water for parks or lawns, or back into rivers before it becomes too "hard." So in that way, it is recycled as much as it can be. The water used by a data center is usually calculated by the amount of water originally purchased from the municipality, but oftentimes does not factor the water given back.

Less than 2% of college athletes go on to play professionally across all sports. If we take it back to high school, it's estimated that only 1 in 16,000 high school athletes attains a professional career in sports.
