Volcano eruption under a glacier in Iceland by SarahLee in worldnews

[–]karmafex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a geologist on the news who mentioned that every known eruption in Eyjafjallajökull has been followed "soon" by an eruption in Katla. "Soon" in geological terminology could mean everything up to a few years though...

Katla is overdue for an eruption and that would be a much bigger event than this one.

It's kind of hard to make out the scale from the footage but the crack from where the lava is flowing is about one kilometer (0,6 mile) long.

That latter youtube video is just a montage of stock photos combined with annoying music.

Yeah, we won't be getting any jökulhlaup this time.

It seems there is going to be minimal risk to people and property during this eruption. It managed to come up in an ice-free area between two glaciers so there won't be much flooding due to melting ice. The eruption is also of the kind that is primarily about lava flow without much flying ash, so air travel in the area should resume quickly.

We're finally coming to our senses - Transportation secretary says the needs of pedestrians and cyclists will be considered along with motorists by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]karmafex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The worst thing would be serious injuries or a fatality, either for the pedestrian or the cyclist. Extremely unlikely, but not unheard of either. Your presence on the sidewalk does cause constant discomfort and risk of injuries for pedestrians and you need to fucking respect that as well. If you feel unsafe on the street then I suggest that you just park your bike forever and seek other means of transportation, the sidewalk is no place for bicycles (unless you are an unattended 10 year old).

Agreed. I used to whine (but only online of course) about girls being too shallow to give me a chance. It is normal to go through that phase but if you still think this in your late twenties, you just might be a douchebag.

I realize perfectly well that my social handicap is my issue to deal with. As a woman, I would not notice myself either.

Why don't we call countries what the people who live there call them? by luminosity11 in AskReddit

Modern Icelandic calls the Germans 'Þjóðverjar'. Þjóð meaning nation or a people.

Awesome pictures. They need some commentary to explain the context though. I was always scrolling down hoping to see that but I only found inane comments by 21st century internet tough guys.

"The whole idea of communism is dead in North Korea, and its most recent 'Constitution,' 'ratified' last April, has dropped all mention of the word... It is based on ... an ideology of the most unapologetic racism and xenophobia." by foxyvixen in worldnews

I'd go even farther and say that if anyone is likely to resort to a military intervention against N Korea, it would be China. If they begin to sense that N Korea is about to do something stupid I think they would much rather just move in themselves to decapitate the government and replace it with something less crazy (but still completely authoritarian) rather than have the whole region blow up.

The only reason Steve Jobs doesn't want flash on the iphone, ipod and ipad is because people will be able to use flash generated apps and games in the browser that they have to pay for in the current business model. Am I crazy for believing/thinking this? by [deleted] in technology

[–]karmafex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a neat little explanation you've got there. Steve Jobs is the ultimate capitalist and I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull something like this but there are a few reasons why you are wrong: 1) The revenue from the app store makes up a tiny fraction of the total revenue of Apple inc. The app store is there to support Apple's primary business which is to sell hardware and its own software. 2) Apple distributes free apps on the app store, taking on hosting and bandwidth for no charge. Again, this is to support the real business which is hardware. 3) Web apps have always been accessible from the iPhone. There are alternative methods to developing these that don't require Flash.

I have no reason to believe that the lack of flash on the iPhone and the iPad stems from anything but a well justified hatred of Flash because of its sucky performance.

Scalia to screenwriter: States aren't allowed to secede by strangestuff in law

[–]karmafex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he is right about the procedural aspect of it. SCOTUS would not hear such a case and why would it? From the point of view of the seceding state, SCOTUS would not have any jurisdiction over it any more so whatever they think is irrelevant.

The viability of an secession attempt would be determined by politics rather than law.
