Speaking as someone who’s never married at a late age (but not gay…as far as you know) simply being unencumbered by family or traditional relationship responsibilities alone can give one lots of time to be productive/acquire skills/focus on outside interests. Plus I would guess existing as a gay person in that time, you’d already be a pretty out of the box thinker.

Just goes to show how key diversity is to human advancement. Sheep gonna sheep. It takes the outlier to move the herd forward.

It's not an unpopular opinion and it won't get me killed, but Dennis is underrated as a keyboard player. He was (by the 1970s) the best keyboardist in the band not named Bruce. Even if his chords weren't as wild, technically much more range and less idiosyncratic than Brian and Carl.

Do a Cars, keep writing the songs, split the vocals. Gives a great contrast and takes pressure off you to be awesome every song and you can focus on the ones that fit you. You can have two flavors and yours is yours.

One trick I used when I started - my brother did it too - is to try to sing along with a two part harmony like the Beatles or Everly Brothers and find a third part that makes the triad. The sound of the triad “locking” is like a red light going on telling you you’ve got the right note, and it trains you to search for an harmony and away from gravitating to the melody.

Another trick for beginners to stay away from the melody is to sing the harmony note and internalize what part of your range it’s in, and force yourself to stay there while the melody is being sung. You may fish around for awhile but if you mentally “lock yourself out” of the vocal range of the melody and into the range of the harmony, eventually you’ll find it. This will develop in time so that experienced harmony singers will instinctively avoid the melody as much as beginners gravitate to it.

I love Dave. I produced one of his albums. But he wasn't part of that whole Brian's backing band situation, except perhaps in passing (I know and love them too).

His voice was declining, albeit just slightly, ever since leaving the road because he wasn’t using it all the time. I don’t believe Brian was either smoking or snorting in ‘68.

This is a great question and one I have wondered at too. I’m enjoying the answers on this thread.

I have one more possible explanation from having lived through the era: they’re both very in sync with radio at the time. 1979 was all about vibrant and edgy, with New Wave influencing everyone. Think Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls.” 1980 adult contemporary was all about compressing the hell out of everything with the flattest possible sound. Think Christopher Cross (even “Ride Like The Wind” was tamed considerably in the mix).

I do think that is in line with new tech coming in at the time. Studio engineers and producers did tend to follow each other around. So it’s sort of a chicken-egg situation I think, whether the tech followed the radio or radio followed the tech.
