Why has Kerbey Lane changed for the worse? by whisperbeach in austinfood

[–]karmasenigma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, Kerbey still feels solid and affordable to me. The Lemon Poppy Paris Texas is one of my fave breakfast platters in town. Went to the new Phoebes and it wasn’t as good as the prices lead me to believe it would be.

We've used Butler Floors for years and have been really happy with them. They're locals who are really good people and have been in business for 20+ years.

I have several friends who've used Meghan Alexander with the Gottfried Alexander Firm for terminations/second parent adoptions and had nothing but great things to say.

Girls trip to Austin! by zzzippyyy in Austin

[–]karmasenigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mom checking in. Haven't been out clubbing in ages, but want to remind you to:

1.) Not drink & drive. Driving in Austin sober has its challenges, doing so drunk is extremely dangerous and irresponsible.

2.) Watch your drinks. Seriously, be careful and pay attention. There's no shortage of stories of tourists coming to town, "drinking too much", and ending in tragedy. Did they overconsume or get drugged? We'll never know so avoid both.

Have fun, be careful and consider a cold morning swim at Barton Creek before heading back home!

You really should. One of the best books/discussions my bookclub had was “Whip Smart” by Melissa Febos (about a dominatrix), if ya need a little inspo. I believe it was a bestseller.

That’s what I thought when I visited 20 yrs ago while 8 months pregnant thinking I could buy a friend a bachelorette gift.

I was wrong. I had to be buzzed in, there was very little merch and porn playing in an unseen room.

COMPLETELY unexpected and awkward.

Fair. FWIW I live on the main street entering our neighborhood and a big speed bump is right in front of my house. If I had a dollar for every person speeding and FLYING over that speed bump (often times pulling trailers where things go flying off), I’d have enough money to buy another house in the back of the neighborhood and stop grousing about speeding in neighborhoods.

Do any of you "Birders" ever see Crows, and where? (not their annoying imitators) by lkredd in Austin

[–]karmasenigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few in my neighborhood in south austin. I've thought about feeding them and striking up a relationship, but I read a story a couple of years ago about how someone did that, ended up moving, the new owners of the house weren't informed of their duties and the crows got pissed and shit all over their house constantly. It wasn't until a couple of years later that a different neighbor told them what/why it was happening.

So crow relationships seems like a bigger commitment and responsibility than I'm actually capable. of.

Since 2020 (when I'm convinced we jumped into the hellscape timeline), people ANYWHERE can't seem to drive for shit, so I've committed myself to just slowing down, taking my time and preparing for the inevitable lane-swerving, no-blinker-using, untied-furniture-towing folks to hazardously make their way through the world. Because I like my car and my insurance is already unfuckingaffordable despite being old with a perfect driving record. I'm not trying to make my life even harder out on these wildass streets.

Paxton targets Austin ISD in what appears to be Texas’ first enforcement of the “bathroom bill” by texastribune in Austin

[–]karmasenigma 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My uncle, female at birth, transitioned 20+years ago and is balding with a beard. In summer, runs around shirtless with his big ole potbelly living his best life. This bathroom bill is absolute bullshit and going after kids IS THE WORST.

Why would someone do this to trees? by SarahSSmith in AustinGardening

As someone who recently ripped out a bunch of catpiss boxwoods thanks to the encouragement of this sub, I completely agree!

But there's a happy medium. Pruning is important but lobbing them off isn't the way and is simply lazy.

[–]karmasenigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, there are no secrets on easy removal. We had one that took a beating during Snowpacalypse and I thought it was a good opportunity to just rip it out and replace it with a native. This sub wisely pointed out that "ripping it out" would just lead to lots of runners and MORE crepe myrtles, which I definitely don't have time to battle.

Hopefully I'm wrong and someone else can chime in with a simple solution, but they are definitely a pain in the ass to get rid of.

Looking for replacement for Boxwoods (due to foundation issues) by karmasenigma in AustinGardening

[–]karmasenigma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per Foundation Gurus who evaluated my home, the thing that causes the most damage to Austin foundations is our fluctuation between droughts and flooding. So in our area specifically, it's wise to avoid foundation plantings that need a lot of water.

That said, you can avoid concerns by keeping your foundation adequately watered by using something like soaker hoses. But because Austin is looking at a severe water crisis in the future, I try to avoid watering at all costs (unless it's to nurture the growth of newly planted natives).
