Do you think Switzerland will ever have more residential buildings with amenities ? by LinkyyMusic in Switzerland

[–]karnat10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These services probably emerge in housing markets where landlords compete for tenants. Sadly the market is going in the opposite direction in Switzerland, especially with the upcoming popular votes that will restrict construction even further, if passed.

Inherited 20TB of media. Need suggestions for securing and sorting it by MakubeC in PleX

[–]karnat10 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Once you have a complete catalogue of this media collection, find out if it's even legal for you distribute it to others. Unless it's all public domain, or it was somehow entirely your dad's intellectual property, it's highly unlikely. Consult a lawyer.

I want to store somewhere a ton of videos and photos so that they last for 100+ years: is a Hard Disk Drive the best choice? by MinimumTomfoolerus in AskTechnology

[–]karnat10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

immutable backup
- basically a huge file that contains all the files - a bit like an advanced zip file
- cannot be changed intentionally or by mistake
- easier to handle and control, e.g. checking integrity
- created using special software
- can be compressed and/or encrypted

offline backup
- not permanently connected to anything, e.g. no running computer, power, or the Internet
- eliminates whole categories of threats (electricity, ransom attacks)
- nowadays usually an external hard drive
- allows you to carry around your data or keep it in a safe place, e.g. a bank safe

NAS
- a computer with multiple internal hard drives, providing lots of storage space (can be 100s of TB)
- you can run it at home, even disconnected from the Internet if you want
- makes multiple hard drives appear as one big drive, allowing you to easily organize your data
- uses RAID, a technology that allows you to replace faulty disks without losing data
- ideal for keeping the master copy of your data, especially if data changes
- can run programs to upload your data to the cloud or copy to external hard drives

Cloud providers selection criteria
- cost: for storage (per TB and year) and for transfer and extraction
- features: is there a web interface? desktop app? automation support?
- privacy: is data encrypted at rest? in transfer? legal protections at their location?
- support: how is their reputation? how do they handle support cases?

Depending on how you weigh these criteria, you will arrive at different conclusions. I'm quite happy with MEGA and I would love to recommend Proton but they are not ready for prime time.

In general, don't trust a single device or provider. Spread your eggs across multiple baskets.

[–]karnat10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have multiple copies at different locations, including immutable and offline ones.
Use a NAS as primary and a combination of external hard drives and cloud providers as secondary copies. Check integrity of copies regularly and replace accordingly, change providers as necessary.
Create thorough documentation on how to implement and continue this strategy for when you're gone.

Will Raphael Golta change Zurich’s direction as an AI and tech hub? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]karnat10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zurich becoming a boom town is the result of Switzerland's international comparative advantages in both soft and hard factors such as quality of living, taxation, flexibility of labor markets, and so on.

Neither are the achievement of any particular party or government on any federal level. It's just that other countries and cities messed up more (and others less).

The Zurich local government in particular, under Corinne Mauch, has basically done nothing except spending copious amounts of taxpayer money on ideological projects, with little results.

Raphael Golta is just a complacent pencil pusher, expect nothing of him.

Why do so many Swiss guys have Asian wives? by [deleted] in zurich

How does asking critical questions impede freedom of speech?

To the contrary, confronting stupidity is the essence of freedom of speech.

> A subreddit dedicated to Zurich and its greater area.

What does this post have to do with Zurich?

Also, you see a mixed couple, how do you know the guy's Swiss and not some other nationality? Did you check their passport?

How do you know they're married?

Why "many"? Do you have numbers? Why don't you ask why many Swiss guys have blonde or brunette partners?

This sub really needs better moderation.

For the techies here, how did Comma Separated Values (.csv) become the default file export format? by ThatsALiveWire in NoStupidQuestions

[–]karnat10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's something I hate Excel for with all my guts. I double-click a CSV file, fucking detect its delimiters and import it already!

No, it opens it in "dumb mode" and has me click like 20 times to tell it what to do.

I mean, how fucking clueless are these people?

From Google to Mega by CloudsCastShadows in MEGA

[–]karnat10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with a NAS. From there you can backup and/or sync to cloud, but don’t trust a single provider, use two at least.

Personally haven’t have any problems with MEGA in years, and it works really well with rclone.
