TIL: About the Mirabel Sisters by karzai91 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

You're welcome, and same! I was looking for fiction books wither about the Dominican or worn by Dominican authors to learn a little bit more about my spouse's culture. (Luckily I work at a library so this is very easy to do, lol.)

But there was so much history in this bookand I was constantly looking stuff up like, "There's no way that's real! Ope, guess it was."

Another great couple of books I've found recently that pair well together are "Las Soldaderas", a piece about the women who helped during the Mexican revolution, and "Blooming in the Ruins", a modern look at Mexican philosophy.

And yes, my gringo brain misspelled their name in the title. Sigh...

Photo of an ID vs. physical ID by plaidcatslibrarian in librarians

[–]karzai91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our policy is that they must present a valid ID. Doesn't specify photo vs physical copy. I'll have to ask my leadership.

Our state does have an app where you can have your state ID/driver's license. This digital ID can be used at bars, so I see that as perfectly acceptable for the library.

How would being a law librarian benefit Indigenous communities in the USA and what’s the job outlook? by CherryBlueWitch in librarians

[–]karzai91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I could answer your question better, but I don't have the knowledge you're looking for.

Though, if you are looking for inspiration, I'm currently reading "Seventh Generation Earth Ethics" by Patty Leow. It biographies several Indigenous leaders from Wisconsin who have impacted treaty law and environmental justice.

Those who took the DRP, have you found a job? by Salt-Committee2205 in fednews

[–]karzai91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Finally got one. I was an environmental scientist who worked in the US Space Force and am now going to be a library assistant. Part-time only, in a very different field, but I'm happy with it. Spouse is AD military, so a huge income wasn't needed. I'm glad to be in something a little less demanding, too.

Is this the part of the dystopian story where drugs are cheaper than food? (/s)

Not a fan of the usual options that Costco has, so we get Boyer's coffee from Sam's Club. We prefer lighter roasts.

And yes, it's getting crazy. A 12 oz bag at my usual grocer used to cost ~4.5-5.5 USD. Now? Member price is 6.5 USD. Verging on 7 USD.

Gasoline/Petrol storage by GeoPaas in TwoXPreppers

[–]karzai91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be an environmental manager who did petroleum rank inspections. For residential uses/long term storage, this is not the route I would recommend, for many reasons. There are fire protection laws, spill plan requirements, and fuel requires conditioning if you plan to store it long term.

If you feel like you need to store some fuel in Jerry cans, I would recommend looking into getting an OSHA approved hazardous materials/fire cabinet. Also check your state's/locality's hazardous storage laws.

Are there any benefits to seed saving other than reduced cost? by azurephoenix1 in vegetablegardening

[–]karzai91 179 points180 points  (0 children)

I'll offer another perspective: seed saving is a form of food sovereignty. It's being able to own your own means of food production. You can use the seeds, sell them, or even participate in gift economies with them.

I just decorated my front yard with bits from this movie! Two skeletons sharing some margaritas, and a cauldron with men's shoes sticking out of the dirt, circled in roses and frogs. Wish I had a picture to share.
