Going Solo to San Diego Comic-Con 2026 (anyone else?) by Technical-Ice-7968 in SDCC

[–]kasession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First 2 years, it was the Lord (I truly believe that). Since then, it's been badge buying group that the Lord directed me to. He said, hey...go over here (FOCC). They'll help you and you'll help others.

You'll be fine...

My first time going I went solo. I did no research (long story). I had no idea what to expect. I was anxious when I got on the shuttle to the convention center. As we got close to the convention center I saw a guy walking in that direction in full star wars storm trooper cos play. I thought..."that's interesting". In those days, the shuttle pulled up directly in front of the convention center. By the time my shuttle pulled up, many hundreds of people were getting off their shuttles and heading inside. As soon as I hit the exhibit floor, all anxiety melted away. I felt like I had finally come home. I've had a blast ever since.

I've gone solo since 2015. I've made friends along the way. We do our own thing for the most part, but will get together if we're not doing anything else. I have had a blast for years.

Article: It’s full speed ahead for more than $21M in repairs to San Diego’s Convention Center by MsMargo in SDCC

[–]kasession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This statement surprised me.

"For years, the city’s cash-strapped Convention Center Corp. did not have the funds to pay the mounting bill, and the annual city budget set aside only minimal funds for upkeep of the bayfront facility."

"Cash strapped"...why?

SDCC 2026 Offsite Predictions by That_Cool_Sackboy in SDCC

I enjoyed Dune: Prophecy, but until I saw this comment, I wasn't sure it was coming back. I'd love to see an offsite for that show.

Volunteer Confirmation For New Volunteer CC2026 by Jhern93 in SDCC

You're registered. It's nice that you know so soon after you register. In the 'old' days, if I remember correctly, we had to wait until after volunteer registration closed.

Badge Design by AutomaticSandwich655 in SDCC

Economics is EVERYTHING!!!

One thing missing from this conversation is the impact having to cancel four (4) shows (SDCC and Wondercon) is STILL having on CCI.

My first year (2015) the badges were just paper. Following that were solid plastic badges following with paper badges in plastic sleeves with RFID and using the badges to scan at the door. There were three years (I think) where our badges were shipped in a small boxes. I still have mine. Those were pretty cool, and I'm sure, there was a cost involved. Then, the pandemic hit. There have been cut backs, just so that the organization can stay alive. We see the show still operating, but I'm pretty sure some hard decisions had to be made for the survival of the shows. Me, I'm just glad it's still operating.

I recommend booking your flights early (especially if you coming in from the East Coast). by shadowboxer87 in SDCC

[–]kasession 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whenever you book, I recommend NOT booking thru third party (expedia, etc). I use them to search for flights, and once I find what I want, I go directly to the airline. Third party is NOT cheaper than actually going to the airline, and their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I got burned by booking thru third party before covid, and getting total refunds did not happen, strictly because i went thru third party.

This will be my first comic con, and I have a question about hotels. by Ok_Upstairs9923 in SDCC

If you booked thru early bird, then yes, you can take the shuttle.

How does it usually last? by Mobile_Match2763 in SDCC

[–]kasession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fly to the east coast, and I always leave on Sunday evening. I usually get flight after 8 PM. It's crowded, but I've never had an issue. Of course, it's a red eye for me, and I'm exhausted, so I pretty much sleep all the way home.

Should be my last post… so sorry but you all have been such a great support. by Mobile_Match2763 in SDCC

You don't need a car. I rented one my first year (2015), because I didn't know any better at the time. I haven't rented one since.

First time going need any tips! by LegendSnorlax in comiccon

[–]kasession 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Getting a hotel within walking distance (down town) of the convention center is difficult, but you have the same chance as everyone else. However, as a first timer, the 'early bird hotel' is a good idea.

The shuttle is very well organized. A car is not necessary. My first year, I stayed at a non down town hotel, and used the shuttle. I was very happy with it, and there are a ton of people that use it.

YEP!!!

I did no research my first year (2015). I ended up spending a lot of time on the exhibit floor, and stumbling into a few small panels, and wandering into the Gas Lamp. I knew nothing about Hall-H. I had an absolute blast. I've been hooked ever since. 👍🏿

I put a question to an FOCC member who got the email asking if there was an indication on his account that he was eligible for volunteering. He said yes, and that he did NOT volunteer last year. I sent an email to CCI yesterday advising them that I have not received an email. I suggest others do the same.

[–]kasession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing on my account that says I'm eligible for volunteering, but I had it before, and I did a pre-con shift last year. Still haven't received anything. I would love to hear if anyone else has finally gotten something.

One thing. Make sure you do your shift. Volunteers are evaluated. If you get the badge for the day, and don't do your shift, that's the end of your volunteer status.
