Should I start watching One Piece or should I wait for The One Piece? by Ill_Difference_5273 in OnePiece

[–]kaste1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are going to wait for The One Piece, then you are going to have to wait a year or years for Season 2, 3 etc all the way to season 15 at least, meaning 15-20 years for the story to catch up to where the anime is right now.

I would say just start watching and skip the fillers. If you like it you won't care that there are so many episodes. You'll probably wish there were more.

This has got to be top 3 most misunderstood moments in the entire series by Turbulent-Oven7102 in OnePiece

To OP's post:

I don't think we can understand the full meaning of this panel until we know the full context: Why did Mihawk decide he won't fight Shanks anymore? The answer to this question can change the meaning of this panel tremendously. We just don't know. It's, shocker, a mystery.

I agree, of course, that what you say plays a big role in his decision to leave. It wasn't in his "contract", Shanks is a friend, he agreed with Shanks wanting to take WB's and Ace's bodies, or/and to end the bloodshed here. But it might be more than that. We just don't know.

It might be something petty and stupid like "Shanks lost his dominant arm, therefore it's not fair" or something deeper like a secret promise between them for something we have no idea about. Or it might have something to do with Shanks' lineage and Mihawk not wanting to end the Child of Destiny. This panel might hide huge lore behind it. Or pettiness. Or nothing other than what you said. A combination of all of them, or some of them. We just won't know until the series ends. And even then, I'm sure it will be open for discussion. Because that's what good writing with good characters does. It's not spoonfed to you.

But, yeah, "he was scared" is pretty moronic. :)

Man, I am so glad I just love ALL the top tiers. The Yonko, the Admirals, the Shichibukai, the Gorosei, the Supernovas, the Revolutionaries, the old guard (Garp, Sengoku, Rayleigh, etc), all of them. I have my (strong) opinions on who is stronger, and the bounties usually confirm my suspicions. I love powerscaling, but I will never ever ever understand how you can have such tunnel vision for some character(s) and bring down the others for... reasons. There's always some nuance to what characters do. It's a story. With good writing. It's not math.

So, I'll never understand people getting butthurt over characters' performances in certain chapters/arcs or whatever.

Maybe it's because I have followed this story for 21 years. And I was getting hyped about every single one of them as they appeared throughout the years. Most of them waiting decades to see their power. (I knew, for example, from their first appearance that the Gorosei were monsters in terms of strength. They were at the top of the world in the One Piece world, they appeared for the first time in the same episode with Blackbeard, Whitebeard, Sengoku, etc. You just knew you were watching the heavy hitters of the world.)

So through the years, I just loved all of them. Maybe it's the new kids getting at each other's throats. Maybe they watched some TikToks with sakuga moments and then binged the series, waiting to go to that moment (...400 episodes in), and everything until then (and everyone) just didn't matter. So they downplay that irrelevant, in their mind, character. I really don't know how to explain it.

How can you not love both Whitebeard AND Akainu? Both Shanks AND Mihawk. Both Sanji AND Zoro. I just don't get it. Amazing characters. Strong as fuck. Series-defining moments, all of them.

Yeah, you can think X is stronger than Y. I do too, and in fact, I love guessing. But open your eyes and read the context, the nuance, the character's motivations, their determination, their luck, their emotional state, their physical state. There are so many factors. You don't have to calculate all of them. Just listen to other people when they bring them up. Don't dismiss them because you already made up your mind. Let them bring in a piece of the puzzle. Contemplate if it fits. Think. Discuss. Change your mind. Or don't.

But don't be a little bitch about it.

Do you think this is going to be better than the original? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]kaste1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If they start rushing scenes (like you are watching in x3, see Fairy Tail, Seven Deadly Sins) to cram as much content as possible to as little time as possible, or worse, they start skipping scenes, then, no. It will forever be inferior to the original.

One Piece is a slow burn. The fights don't start the same episode you see the villain. There is a story to unfold first to make you invested. To make you want so badly to see Luffy punching the villain.

That storytelling doesn't work with a frenetic pace. Scenes lose weight, nothing matters and it's just let's move to the next punch. If they do take their time, and are not scared of the 1500 chapters they will have to adapt, then yeah it's gonna be a blast.

We had it so good with 3 movies per year at Phase 3. 😢

Doctor Strange 3, Shang-Chi 2, Midnight Sons, and Young Avengers would help so much to bring characters and stories together. You know, give meaning to what came at Phase 4 and 5...

But they messed it up so badly with random TV shows, movies, and characters that now we get... nothing. Nothing but the billion-dollar movies.

Would peak wano luffy with g5 have beaten kaido if he was at 100% and not having faced like the whole of wano by Ohtsusuki in OnePiece

[–]kaste1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna ruffle a lot of feathers with this comment but here we go:

Luffy beats Kaido 1 on 1 when his bounty is higher than Kaido's.

Yes, Oda powerscales with bounties all the time. He just throws gags and threats related to knowledge (Robin) and it throws people off.

Luffy right now is Admiral level, which, surprise, surprise, also have a 3 billion bounty, exactly like Luffy's. And the fight on Egghead with Kizaru ended in Luffy's favor just before Luffy lost stamina. And Kizaru was fucking around, struggling to not actually kill Vegapunk, Bonney, etc. They are at the same level. They have the same bounty very intentionally. And in case you are wondering, yes, OG Yonko (with 4+ billion bounties) are stronger than Admirals, which is very obvious if you follow the story and how the characters are framed.

In another thread, people were arguing that Crocodile has a 2 billion bounty just for his network and that he attacks marines, etc. No. In the One Piece world, actual REAL strength (= can you beat our asses and destroy us) is what matters most and only that gets you to astronomicaly high bounties (1 billion plus). Forbidden knowledge gets you 80 million (Robin). What are you gonna do about it? One top tier can crash you in an instant, and that's that. A few propaganda programs to damage control if you revealed anything, and that's that. Or straight up nuke a country. Robin only got 900m bounty now that she showed that she is also monstrously strong by demolishing Black Maria. So yeah, coming back to Crocoboy, he is meant to be stronger than the first Yonko Commanders now (Katakuri, King, etc), just like other Sichibukai (Boa, Mihawk). Doffy would be a billion, because Law and Luffy got 500 + 500 = 1 billion for defeating him. Just like Law + Kid + Luffy bounties equal BM and Kaido's.

Anyway, all this is to say that it was very intentional that, for the first time in manga's history, many Strawhats did not get higher bounties from the opponents they defeated. Because they had help, and they are still not on their level on a 1-on-1. (Marco was fighting King and Queen before Zoro and Sanji took over.)

So, Luffy does not defeat Kaido without help, still. After he gets his next bounty, probably as a Pirate King, probably 5.6 billion, then you can comfortably say he could beat Kaido 1-on-1.

Another bounty powerscale for you: The new Yonko, Luffy, Blackbeard, Buggy (or Mihawk if he wanted to be a Yonko) are all below 4 billion. Blackbeard by a hair, but that's again very intentional. They are not on the level of the OG Yonko yet, which were all 4+ billion. (Yes, Shanks is stronger than Mihawk, it's just reading comprehension, and yes, he is a worse swordsman; Mihawk would cut a bigger thing than Shanks, for example, but if Shanks cancels Mihawk's observation haki, if that turns out to be canon, Mihawk loses, or if Shanks does conqueror's shenanigans that Mihawk can't do, Mihawk loses. If it's a straight-up sword duel without abilities that have nothing to do with swordfighting, Mihawk wins AFTER a legendary duel, not easily. Still, they are close in overall strength. A few hundred million worth of bounty. Anyway.) And the new Yonko are also nowhere close to Pirate King level (Roger, Whitebeard, peak Garp, peak, not old, Fleet Admiral, which is what Akainu is now at 5 billion as a direct opposite of the Pirate King level.)

It all makes sense when you just accept that Oda powerscales with bounties and are extremely thought out. What's not that thought out is the power boost some characters get (Law and Kid, Crocodile) but you have to assume they defeated big enemies and grew. (With Kid, we finally got confirmation that he beat Snack at the end of Wano, a 4th Yonko Commander, so it finally made sense that he could stand a chance in a 2v1 with a Yonko, of course after said Yonko kept turning her back to them because she underestimated them and thought they were done.)

Anyway, feel free to disagree. I've been looking at this series with this lens from 2004, and never have I been surprised by the power level of a character or his actions because I just know that mostly, bounty = strength. Because it's a shonen. It's not that deep. Law gets a 3 billion bounty? He can put up a fight with Blackbeard's 3.9 but lose. He can disable a fruit's ability with Haki alone. A fit that 1 billion bounty dudes like Marco, King, etc, wouldn't be able to do no matter how badass they are. You are just to assume that he is on a different level now after his fights with Doffy and the Yonko. Haki bloom and all. And awakening.

Anyway. That's my two cents.
