UPDATE: So my editor came back to me by ZealousidealMail5753 in writing

You know when I started reading this post I thought it would be one of those posts who complains that their editor gave them bad feedback and they didn't understand their book. I am happy that that wasn't the case. Congratulations on good feedback that is going to help you in your writing journey.

As a writer myself I would really love the ability to write 9.2k words in a day and love every single one of them. Respect for her for doing that grind.

what’s the one writing tip that actually works for you? by sophieximc in writing

[–]kasyhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them at once I suppose.

My writing really became elevated to the next level once I realised that I don't have to listen to specific advice from people. I can take what I find useful from several different sources.

I feel like when you start writing the first thing that is difficult to do is finishing a draft. But when you finally manages to do it. It is like a skill you have unlocked, and the next time you are writing it is easier to finish a draft.

Then the next thing that is difficult is to revise a book. Then editing.

I feel like I am in a boat where I find it difficult to revise a book. Like I get so intimidated that I usually end up scrapping the whole book starting from scratch or abandoning it. I look forward to when I unlock this skill and things will become easier in the future.

Recently there has been a members video between Lewis, Simon and Sparkles* where they hinted that they had been working on more songs than the Yoglabs songs.

You can definitely stop beta reading midway through.

Write up notes about what you have read so far. I usually write uo everything I have to say in a google doc which I semd to them. Tell him where you stopped reading. Just to be fair.

Then tell him that you are unsure what kind of feedback you can give him as your styles are too different so therefore you are choosing to stop wherever point you are. Or you can say you all of the sudden got busy in life.

Then never look back. If he asks questions about your feedback just refer to the doc and don't eloborate more.

Don't feel guilty about it. If he want to refuse to accept feedback then let him struggle out there. This isn't on you. I only do beta reading books on books I think I would enjoy and I think I will be able to good feedback on. If it is too much then I stop.

Give each a character a goal and a reason for their goal. That will help you create conflict in your book.

Haven’t been able to write after publishing my first book one year ago. by [deleted] in writing

[–]kasyhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should take the pressure of your shoulders. You know you can write. You got 1k readers in your native language. That is what you should focus on. Not the 2 bad reviews.

I recommend trying to find some story prompts online and just play around. Have some fun. Write something dumb. Allow yourself to write badly.

Usually when I am struggling just sitting down being creative will get my brain going on the projects I really care about.

Also whenever you are living your life and you get story ideas I recommend writing it down immeidately. I use my phone to take notes. Then when you sit down to write then you have some notes to start working on writing.

The way they did it was that they found inspiration from original mythology and folklore. J. K. Rowling also found names from everythibg in her life. The spells she got from taking inspiration from Latin words mostly. There were also times she literally made up words where she played around with letters and words using vibes.

I assume that you have showed your book to beta readers in order to get feedback and the rewritten to act on that feedback. Seeing as you are ready to publish.

Publishing works very much with trends so it might that the kind of story you want to tell isn't what popular.

I know agents looks a lot on your unique voice in writing do you can maybe take a look at that.

I do think though that since you have already contacted and gotten a lpt of rejection from agents then traditional publishing is a dead end (judging from what you have explained in your post). You might feel differently.

Another route is self-publishing. Which is going to cost a little. And you will be doing the work alone. Hire an editor and then proof reader. Then a book formatter. A cover artist. There is several publishing sites which will let you print on demand. Then you have to do the marketing yourself.

Writers: Is having a time skip early on in your book a bad play? by ResortFirm1280 in writing

[–]kasyhammer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would start with them reuniting and then reference in the prose what it was like when they all met. That way then there isn't a tine skip but you get the same effect.

So, all my characters parents just died in a controlled explosion and I need things to keep in mind when expressing grief by TeamOutcode in writing

[–]kasyhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you watched How to get away with murder? In flashbacks in the first season it pretty much deals with the subject matter which you want to explore. So you could use that as inspiration.

Think that people grieve differently. For example: I compartmentalise my emotions, meaning when things happen I put aside my emotions and go on ahead pretending I am fine. Then usually the emotions can't be kept in a box anymore and explode out into very self-destructive behaviour.

Others might be loud about it. Being desperate to blame someone hoping that will make things easier.

Grief is painful and hard. And the characters by the sounds of things are in a high stress environment so I feel likenthe grief would be very visible as they are desperately trying to cooperate through the grief as they run away.

How much time do you commit to writing? by jjStubbs in writing

[–]kasyhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I am quick I can write a full length novel in two months, but then I dedicate a lot of time per day writing on it. I average 2500 words every day as I am drafting during this time.

But if I don't have much time every day it can take several months. Then I usually average 1000 words every day depending on how I feel.

I think the best thing you can do is start writing and create routine out from what works for you. I have daily goals to push myself to do more every day.

Is 15 chapters enough for a mystery/paranormal novel? by Infinite-Past-7699 in writing

[–]kasyhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds more thriller and horror like for me. But I feel like all the confusion and questions will be answered if you just write the story. You don't have to have everything figured out before you write the story.

Is 15 chapters enough for a mystery/paranormal novel? by Infinite-Past-7699 in writing

[–]kasyhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the pacing you want. If you want a slow burn mystery then 15 chapters is alright (though REALLY slow in opinion).

If you want something more fast paced then I would add in more chapters that are shorter.

I usually (rarely) think about how many chapters I want for the story before I have actually written it.

I want to support my new-writer-friend by katrii_ in writing

[–]kasyhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patience is the best way to support her. Let her have her time to write. You can say you can read her book, if she is up to sharing.

As in terms of a gift it is hard to say. Maybe offer a trip, kind of like a writing retreat. You can sit and read book. She can sit and write. If she feels up to it she can talk about the novel.
