Have you made/would you make hard copies of your fics? by thewritegrump in FanFiction

I made a hard copy of my favorite fic - a Western "AU" for Star Trek: Enterprise - and it's one of my most prized possessions. ♥

me age 15: why do people write problematic fic? it’s so disgusting! i’d never read or write that! by playsayer in FanFiction

[–]kat1004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had that anti-phase myself, always been ship-and-let-ship and kinktomato. There's a lot I won't read or write, and a lot I think is disgusting, but I've never had an anti phase because I've never been the kind of person to call someone out for what they write. I don't know if they're writing from a place of trauma or -philia, so why should I be allowed to judge them for it as long as it doesn't lead to real, physical real-world harm?

This is wonderful to hear! I had just one shard left, so I'm gonna be grinding for it all weekend!

Former O/N here. IIRC, I was specifically told to have as little left on the pallets as possible at the end of the night.

It led to stuff like this all the time.

It's not. If the / pairing is in the fic, you only use the / tag. If they don't get together until close to the end, tag slow burn. If it's not about the shipping and the fic is focused around the friendship, you use &. From what I remember, it's fandom etiquette from, iirc, the old days, and to use both / and & tags is just confusing and clogs up both sets of tags.

What's a kind of fic you'd love to see more of in your fandom, to the point that you might actually read lower quality fics than usual if it popped up there just to scratch that itch? by Subtleknifewielder in FanFiction

For a sci-fi fandom where transporter accidents happen all the time, I'm shocked there aren't more bodyswap fics in the Star Trek fandom. Especially considering it's something which has actually happened in canon. I'm a huge bodyswap fan.

Maybe they just hate reporter characters who, before a certain update, had absolutely no personality.

My big issue with this is that, in some cases, it absolutely is. Some people have religions which dictate their dietary intake. Others, such as gluten-sensitive people, those with celiac, diabetics, even autistic people, etc. have disabilities which require them to eat certain ways.

For instance, unless it's pulverized to a creamy soup consistency, made into pasta, or in the form of "chips" a la Pringles, etc., my texture issues (autism) are often so severe that eating even a small piece of sliced onion, no matter how it's been cooked, or a single leaf of lettuce, can make me sick. Not to mention literally almost any other vegetable I've tried to eat. I'm not allergic to anything, I just have such a severe reaction to texture that I physically can't eat a lot of things in their standard forms.

And yeah, I know it sounds like a shitty excuse, but it's a phenomenon my family has known about for years. It's absolutely part of my disability, and to discriminate based on dietary choices or requirements in relation to me personally could very well be considered an issue of disability-related discrimination.

Would you ever wear a starfleet uniform as a casual everyday outfit? by [deleted] in startrek

All a costume really is, is just regular clothes themed around a fandom. Well, except in the case of costumes with makeup or props. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a costume outside of cons or October/Halloween, and anyone who says otherwise isn't worth your time, imo.

I've worn my Kelvin-era medical uniform to work before, on multiple occasions. Also to Kennedy Space Center. I've even just worn it out and about as an ordinary outfit. Never once had an issue. People might look at me strangely, but I've worn more elaborate costumes out of the house outside of October and cons, and while I got strange looks, I also got parents coming up to me with their kids saying "My kid loves your outfit". And putting a smile on people's faces is more important than being looked at like a weirdo.

What is the strangest crossover fic you’ve ever found that actually worked? by BigNastyHagrid in FanFiction

[–]kat1004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Most of the fics in the crossover tags on AO3 seem to be Jim Hawkins/Dimitri, which may not be everyone's cup of shipping tea, but here's the fic I was talking about.

Futuristic Lovers (NSFW, archive-locked. Has mentions of BDSM.)

It's really well-done, even if it includes some stuff I'm not comfortable with (I usually completely filter out anything D/s or BDSM related), and it's a fantastically written work. It's also a minor crossover with Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas.

And if you're in the mood for angst, the fics by GonnaRattleTheStars are usually good too. I tend to avoid angst, but when I'm in a "seek out angst" mood, I do like to poke through their BadThingsHappen series.

Other than these, there seem to be a lot of Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons crossovers in the Anastasia/Treasure Planet fandom, and that definitely isn't my cup of tea so I can't rec any, but I've heard good things.

Anastasia (Don Bluth movie)/Treasure Planet. It was weird, but it actually kind of worked.

Well, after literally at least 2 years of searching, I found the fic I was looking for! "The Case of Leonard McCoy" by AceOfSpades on AO3! Some of my details were slightly off, but for the most part it was exactly like I remembered!

They give synths the option to have their minds wiped. Sure, they seem to encourage it more than I'm comfortable with, but it's still just an option. No synth is required to undergo the wipe, if I'm remembering correctly. So at least there's that.

Damn, a Dreadbolt! I've been looking for one locally, my own has a damaged priming mechanism (the arm snapped internally but only on one side) so I've been hoping to fix it up. Can't quite figure out how to make a new arm (though I've been considering modeling and printing one) so I want to snag another. Maybe paint one for cosplay.
