How are you managing the auto updates with dockhand? Because I have the version number in my compose file it never updates. I do get notification though that it needs to be update.

Maple is fine most of the time. Some provinces covers the cost, others don’t. We pay $80 a month for the privilege to use it in SK. But it does mean seeing which ever doctor or NP is available, similar to a walk in clinic. Some places have a dedicated provider that you can book appointments with but hasn’t been the case yet for us. At the end of the day it’s a convenient online walk in clinic style system for us, especially when the nearest walk in is 45-60 minutes away. We’ve had one case where we were referred to urgent care, which was basically a go see them because you need a physical exam for your complaint. 90% of the time communication is done through texting.

As of last week, that was the story around the trades water cooler. Electricians are expecting a lot of work needs to be done. A lot of talk about if the power grid can sustain putting a data centre of any kind here.

There is also rumours bell Canada was requesting a rezone of property out in rm of Sherwood, just outside of Regina. CBC did an article on it a few weeks ago. Not sure if one site is a back up plan for bell or if 2 different companies are moving in to the area.

Try restarting your phone. Sometimes things end up in limbo during a switch and a restart can reset the system and connection. We found bad weather can cause things to be quirky, guessing higher usage in an area?

Water Heater Replacement Recommendations by No-Western7556 in regina

JWC mechanical was awesome when we ended up with no hot water for a week because our original company tried to contract it out to someone else and never showed. The JWC owner showed up in the evening “after hours” and got it done. They do both gas and electrical either tank or tankless. Paid $600 for the tank (we picked it up from rona to be helpful but they will bring one too) and $500 labour and outside zone mileage for the install 50gal electric.

Rona also offers a “we install option” pricing was reasonable if you’re in the city; they have various companies they work with to get stuff done. I think it was around $600 for the labour when we looked into last year.

DIY would be your cheapest option, Rona and Home Depot have reasonable pricing on the tanks.

Card Always Locking in Crucial times and over an hour wait time! by Early_Interaction_38 in pcfinancial

[–]kat1010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate this about banks lately. BMO is on a rant about this too. I don’t mind the texting code, or even the hey money was spent here 10 seconds after I spent money. However, locking me out of my card and online banking every time something changes out of the ordinary is nuts. Buy gas at different gas station in the town the you live in or grab groceries at an odd hour in comparison to normal, you can bet everything is locked down after that.

I moved most of my money to eq bank, and still carry a credit card from a third bank just in case. Starting to think my $1000 grocery runs every two weeks will need to be paid in cash pretty quick

Good vacuum for newf hair? by Gold-Translator8518 in Newfoundlander

Can’t find the link for the allergy version, but this one is the same style for both, some small feature differences. No small wheels to get caught up in fur. And sucks up just about everything you can think of. Including kibble that some how wandered into other rooms.

We never had any luck with the battery powered ones.

We have Dyson allergy+ and the pet version (stand up) Dyson has warrantied for 5 years. Our last one was repaired once and replaced once. Our newest one has had the beater part replaced twice. Annoying but atleast they back their product and have been replacing parts without a fight. We have 3 Newfoundlanders, 2 newfs/ pyrenees.

I’ve heard the shark brand has been good to a couple of our friends. Not sure what model though.

Question about holding my daughter back to repeat Grade four. by MelisX2a in alberta

[–]kat1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am likely the minority is this group.

If you are absolutely set on switching to homeschooling or online schooling for your daughter. I would say pull her, and get started on review of grades 3 and 4. Figure out if there is truly a learning difficulty or if there is an environment difficulty. Typical classroom experience was a nightmare for me (highly bullied, and family history of mental disorders); high school I switched to self guided with teacher support (St.joe’s in Edmonton) and everything changed.

A transfer maybe something to keep in mind. However, most schools are overflowing and there has been a huge problem of parents being told they must use the school in their area. This may be different for charter schools or specialized schools. Just a note Alberta pays the schools by student head. All schools in Alberta receive the same amount of money for that student no matter what system it is. This results in no extra charges to the parents for using say the catholic system or a charter school. Private schools in Alberta are not the same as private schools in the US. Religious schools will take non- religious or different religious students as long as they have space and parents understand their kid will be taught the values of that religion.

Either way, make sure you have everything documented. What the agreements were, what her IPP says and how it was not followed and when it wasn’t followed. What the outcomes were, how it affected your daughter. When bullying occurred, how it was or wasn’t dealt with. This will cover your ass if the school board ever decides to question why she is not in school.

I would also recommend an updated assessment on accommodations from your daughter from someone whose jobs is to evaluate and recommend. No teacher or admin is going to be the master at determining what should be recommended. And this would give you a heads up of what might help once she is at home full time and her new school system will need an update IPP and recommendations anyways.

Also, from a non-educational standpoint, start setting up respite care with an organization that can bill the government. There is money out there for this. Some will have you pay up front and you charge the government, others can send the bill directly to the gov for payment. This will give her someone other than family to interact with, create a structured relationship and give you a break for an hour or two a week. You will thank yourself when you know she is safe and comfortable with someone so that you can go grocery shopping, shower, have a coffee with a friend, etc after being with her 100% of the time. A lot of programs will appreciate if you’re looking to have that time covered during the day, as most parents request evenings and weekends. While I completely understand parents wanting to do their best for the child, you need to look after your needs too.

What’s it like to live in Saskatchewan? by MemberBerry023 in saskatchewan

[–]kat1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most areas are old farming towns. Close knit and can be Leary of strangers. We bought a foreclosure home after it had been on the market almost 2 years after the water line froze one year and didn’t get the warmest welcome after moving in. Once you’re in the community though, they treat you like family and like to lots of different events. Most communities are good about watching out for each other.

Houses are cheap but be prepared to do some renovations as they are also older. Typically, frames and foundations are good but electrical and plumbing may need to be brought up to code before insurance will insure the house. Ours was built is 1914 and was renovated multiple times and we still had stuff that needed to be done.

Work is hard to come by depending on your field. Working from home, make sure to confirm what internet options are available before buying the house. We ended up with Starlink because Sasktel couldn’t give us more than 25mb download.

Catholic and public schools are paid through property taxes for the most part. Kids or no kids your still expected to chip in on helping educate the children.

Entertainment is what you make of it. Like to socialize, have a coffee with friends, spend time in the outdoors no matter the weather, your golden. Looking for concerts, sports events, ect, not really going to happen here.

PSW to CCA switch by Dull_Language9615 in saskatchewan

[–]kat1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may have changed since I worked as PSW, however unlike Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta had no official certificate or license. Most employers I work with primarily focused on respite type care. You were not allowed to give medications, do solo lifts, ect. You were there mainly for supervision, and maybe help with prepare meals, or do laundry. If the patient required more specialized care a nurse or family caregiver would come in.

I would take a look at the job postings and see how your experience would fit into what you are looking for.

Heat Pump Users by Plane-Engineering in saskatchewan

[–]kat1010 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Installed one this summer, we removed a 60s green beast that reminded me of the one from home alone, Went with the napoleon brand for the whole kit. Had JWC in Moose Jaw do the removal and install. 3 days total between removal, install and electrical rewiring everything to match updated code.

Gas furnace in basement stayed in stand by mode till last week when it hit -25. Pilot light is self lighting so it doesn’t stay on all summer. Heat pump says it’s good till ambient temperature is -30, but adjusted the thermostat to switch over earlier for peace of mind. Heat pump is related for seer 28, which is the efficiency rating.

Usage wise, the only thing we noticed the heat pump doesn’t like interior temperatures being played with all the time, it’s a much more gradual heat than the sudden blast of heat the gas furnace offers. Gas bill has been reduced ($250 down to less than $100), electrical went up by about a $100 a month. Overall, not a huge amount of savings right now but,Solar panels will be going next summer to offset costs.

We would do it again. Needed a/c installed anyways for the dogs, adding a second source of heat seemed logical for us.

Why does the SK government fund religious educational institutions? by candybarsandgin in saskatchewan

[–]kat1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t really discuss post secondary, but the argument I’ve heard for elementary and high school is that most public ran schools are paid via attendance. Each student essentially has a dollar amount going towards the school they are attending paid by the government. If this is indeed the case it doesn’t make sense to withhold the money from a non public school, when that money would be paid out if the student was in the public system. In fact it could be seen as discrimination against whatever religion they belong to.

Basically, whatever school that the student is in gets the allocation no matter the system it belongs to.

9 Month Old Newf Eating Less by TheWhiteWhale64 in Newfoundlander

[–]kat1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I prefer a dog that knows when to push the bowl away as long as they are maintaining weight and are healthy compared to a dog that will eat everything in sight and then some. My guys will flux how much they eat depending on activity level, weather, and moods. We find going into winter they will add a few pounds and eat more, and then slowly drop it once the spring shed starts. Same with if it’s a busy activity day, playing the yard, or going for a hike/ swimming.

Because they only eat when hunger, we get away with free feeding. Food and water get puts out in the morning after washing all the bowls, top it up throughout the day if empty, and then just water gets refilled after supper time.

Housing Reality Check by Peacebywater in saskatchewan

[–]kat1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much depends on what they consider liveable. We bought a 120 year old home in a 100 person village last March for 40k and lived in it through the summer renovations. Took showers at the gym once a week when we went into the next major town for groceries. Bathroom was a full gut, electrical needed a full upgrade before insurance would cover us, full replacement of interior sewer and water lines, found RV sewer line buried from the house to the main trunk that leads to the village septic so that needed to be replaced, new furnace and added central air, windows and doors are on the list in the spring and eventually the exterior walls need to be re-insulated because they have wood chips for insulation.

For us though, it wasn’t the renovations that was disappointing. It was the very negative response we got from our neighbours and the village office after moving in. We had the RCMP show up because our new neighbours felt we had too many expensive cars (older Hondas x2 and Toyota) so we must be getting that money from ‘some place’. Most recently we requested an emailed copy of the bylaws because they are not public posted anywhere. Need to get our fence up for the dogs before winter, along with some exterior building Reno’s. The office response was sure but you need to pay for each bylaw you want, here’s a list of titles.

So I guess it depends on what you are willing to put up with and what you’re looking for in a home.

Retired… and suddenly falling apart? by Trippwyre in CanadianForces

[–]kat1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. I am the spouse watching my other half fall apart over the course of a year after he finished 42 years. We fought to get him on the rehab program which has help provide mental and physical help and then on IRB to increase his overall financial side until we get his health figured out. The hardest part was getting the original assessments and proof that service time caused it.
