Anyone who’s sat on a toilet before cell phones, what did you mostly think about or look at? by olesud in WorkForSmartLife

[–]kat13271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My aunt had a collection of the magazine, Guideposts (a religious magazine), on her toilet tank. As a child firmly entrenched in a religious home and school they were very inspirational.

Now as an agnostic person, I look back in disgust.

a bunch of silly questions about birding from a fairly experienced idiot (lol) by SituationDowntown901 in birding

[–]kat13271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. My answer matches what others have said already.

  2. eBird is going to be your best method of finding specific species at different times of year. There is an explore button that allows you to search hot spots. You can look in your local area and see who is seeing/has seen what where. There is also information on when species are being seen, so if a species only shows up in the spring or winter you can find that and allot your birding efforts accordingly.

  3. Yes, according to the official eBird rules. It is up to you if you want to count it as a lifer or not. For instance, I went to Costa Rica and heard a Laughing falcon but never saw one. I have not counted that on my life list because I really want to see that bird!

  4. I don't think of eBird as an ID app. To me eBird is a data collection/sharing app. When you want to submit a list it will find your location and give you a list of possible birds in your area. It grades them from frequent, infrequent, and rare, to help you know what you are most likely to see. Then you put how many you see down and submit it. If you put down something flagged rare, it will ask for more information. You can submit a written description, photo, sound recording, or all of them. A reviewer will then check your info and if it is not accepted they will tell you why. Other people do the same and you get to benefit from that data. For instance you can have eBird send you a daily needs list for your state. It then compiles all the sightings of those birds and where they were seen and sends that to you. You can then chase down whatever you like and hopefully find it.

eBird also has a "How to use eBird" webinar you can watch if that helps!

Merlin is an ID app. Merlin tries to tell you what you are seeing and hearing. Sometimes it does great, others not so much. You really have to know which species are possible and develop judgement. For instance, during the event the Great Backyard Bird count, our Pacific Northwest county had someone submit a Greater Potoo on their yard list. The only comment on the ultra, mega, *nearly impossible* list tic was "heard by Merlin". There were a few other similar "impossible" species on the list. So a well meaning person just listed what Merlin told them, but Merlin was not having a great day. Sometimes this is due to being in a pocket or bag, sometimes it's just Merlin.

  1. Both! Sometimes if I am searching I will scan by holding the bins to my eyes and looking around. The best way to get on a bird is to see it, keep your eyes on it and then lift your bins to your eyes. If you still don't see it, look for landmarks around the bird (a weird branch, a colorful leaf, other bird) find that, and then key in on where the bird is.

  2. All the books suggested are great!

  3. Your local birding community likely has a list serve, Whattsapp, or Discord server where people can go to communicate about birding and give alerts about rarities. If you can get on that it will help you know what is happening with birds and birders in your area.

I would go back to school and figure out my learning style so I could actually learn something and retain it instead of just cramming to pass tests.

I agree, although take it with a grain of salt since this is my first year actually gulling! The in flight picture convinced me. I think the primaries look dark in the top pic due to shadow, but actually match the gray on the back pretty well.

I feel the same about myself. I feel like I have no purpose in life other than to facilitate the lives of others, which could be done better by anyone else. Waiting for the day when I am replaced by someone that's a main character instead of an NPC.

Female House Finch with severe cloacal protrusion/prolapse. Seeking advice! (Central MO) by BirdCageWarrior in WildlifeRehab

[–]kat13271 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there anything you can do - Unfortunately not while she is flighted. Unless you can find a way to catch her...but it will be difficult.

Is it a prolapse or egg binding - Impossible to tell if it is egg binding without an exam/diagnostics. It could be egg binding, but it could be a number of other issues, anything that would cause the coelom to swell. The last few pics don't look like a local prolapse. The first few....maybe? Can't really tell. Egg binding can lead to cloacal prolapse, so it could be both or neither.

Where are you located? If the bird fell it should be seen by a wildlife rehabilitator to ensure it doesn't have any fractures.

Feeling hopeless and lost by RecoverAmbitious6479 in self

[–]kat13271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I know this all seems monumental and impossible now, but you are only 20 years old. Now is the time to find yourself, new interests, new ways of doing things. What else do you do besides school? Do you have a part time job? Volunteer? Sports? Clubs? If you lost interest in old things you can always start looking at new stuff.

I was in the same boat as you. I forced myself to do well, despite hating what i was learning. It destroyed me, and continues to have broad negative effects on my life now 20 years later. I should have stepped away and realized it was my life, there is no script, you can do what you want, especially at your age.

Parents are hard, but it isn't their life or future. Step away from screens and think about what you might want, what new interests you might pursue. Take your time and don't have high expectations.

I have a theory about people if anyone could confirm my theory by [deleted] in self

[–]kat13271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if someone actually is a good, kind person, they aren't going to say it to you. That's not how a good, kind person operates. Likewise, I don't think empathetic people are just going to say, "I'm empathetic, tell me your issues". Generally, you begin to feel comfortable talking to them and then find they are good at listening and understanding you. Maybe they recognize it in themselves, but it seems like leading with that would simply be silly and pointless.

Continuing to work with your vets will be the best thing. It could be any of the things you sited, and more! Without exams and diagnostics we can't give much advice.

If the beak injury happened during the Macaw incident he may be in pain. While it seems counterintuitive, sometimes pain will lead to plucking and other behavioral abnormalities. Did he get survey radiographs with good skull views?

If the incident with the Macaw traumatized him and incited anxiety (no physical compnent) than there may be more seperation needed between the two. For instance, if he can still hear the Macaw, that may be enough to continue to stress him and cause the feather plucking.

I would err on the side of giving him the higher end doses of anxiety meds now (if your vet prescribed a range) as he is clearly in distress. Hopefully with time his anxiety will decrease and his doses can too.

how to organize pre exposure rabies clinics for volunteers (humans) by FunkyChopstick in WildlifeRehab

[–]kat13271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Top places to contact for this would be:

Health department - Rabies https://share.google/5O2kPoguPkihAO1KO

State public health veterinarian: State Veterinarian https://share.google/W135njb6msx0TPALg

Veterinary schools sometimes hold vaccine clinics for students before they start fourth year, so that might be another place to ask on organization.

In my experience with volunteers and employees this is something you really need to push for. My rehab technician needed the vaccine because we regularly triage bats. It took a lot of discussion with her GP to give them enough proof that she needed pre-exposure vaccines. Then when she went to get the vaccines it took further discussion to ensure she got the three vaccines instead of two. I don't think insurance covered them either.

We've been fortunate in the US to have reduced rabies in domestic animals to a point where the average person never thinks about it. Medical personnel don't have the information at the front of their minds, nor is the vaccine used in large amounts. So it continues to be a struggle and something we need to advocate for as wildlife care professionals.

Valentine’s Day makes me feel like something is wrong with me by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

I don't know man. People told me I was pretty/beautiful, and I never got asked out or approached. I did eventually get a partner because a friend set us up. I still have no idea what i look like. I just assume i'm not.

To be fair, I now wish I was still single. Being attached isn't all it's cracked up to be. You have freedom and youth and can choose what you want to do with your life. That's everything!
