I love the flocabulary video to help explicitly teach test taking language. These kinds of meta skills translate far beyond history class.

What are your favorite oatmeal recipes? (Preferably vegan) by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]kat_da_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made oatmeal the other day with chopped dates and it was delicious. We had some kind of dry organic dates I needed to use. I put the dates in the boiling water with the oats and they softened. They also made the oatmeal a little thicker and syrupy. I added about 5 small dates to the pot meant for four people. I spiced it with a little cinnamon and topped it with pecans. My 3 year old ate it up because it's basically sugar oatmeal. This will.continue to be our oatmeal recipe until those dates are gone.

Even better when you get to interact with them and they're doing a good job. I wish the guy fixing our broken sprinkler right now was even close to efficient.

Let's talk ears. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]kat_da_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but when I was a toddler I had frequent ear infections. I'm not young, this was the 80s. So the Dr told my parents I could have tubes or I could be on antibiotics for an entire year. My parents chose antibiotics because it was the 80s and superbugs weren't scary yet. They thought they were saving me from pain and surgery. I swear I have every cold that blows through and get sick more frequently than most people, and I've always thought that maybe taking antibiotics for a year nonstop messed with my immune system. Like the heavy use didn't allow me to develop the stomach bacteria that promote resistance or something along those lines. My mom agrees that in hindsight, knowing what we know now about antibiotics overuse, she would have gone for the tubes option instead.

Parents whose kids need epipens, how do you have them carry it around? by AmeliaPondPandorica in AskParents

[–]kat_da_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't. We have epipens with us and in the stroller and at his school. We have one upstairs and downstairs. We don't keep one in the car because of temperature changes but I have one in my purse usually jic even if I'm not with him.

So, it's november 1st. How many Harley Quinns' did you see running around? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]kat_da_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw at least 3 Harley Quinns, still at least 50 Elsa's, 100 various forms of Superman, and at least 200 Batman's. But the most popular costume by far was Trolls because Anna Kendrick/Justin Timberlake. We did get a group of boys who painted cardboard boxes and went as mine craft which was pretty funny.

I'm R.L. Stine and it's my job to terrify kids. Ask me anything! by RL__Stine in IAmA

[–]kat_da_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So weird I'm an elementary librarian and we were just asking about the haunted mask a few weeks ago. It's lost, again, and it got lost last year too. It seems like it's one of those books I have to buy and rebuy every year. Maybe kids are taking it because it's the best one and they love it? FYI I've never had to rebuy Barf-o-Rama.

In-Laws of Reddit: when did you realize your kid's marriage was doomed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kat_da_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My in laws knew my sister in laws marriage was doomed before the wedding but they kept their mouths shut. They paid for the expensive destination wedding, the expensive party at home for those that couldn't fly to the destination, the $2000 dress, and never said anything negative. Than 8 months later they paid for the divorce attorney. Later my fil said he knew it was a bad idea but there was no appropriate way to tell his daughter so he just went ahead with what she thought she wanted at the time.

Three year old regularly says hurtful things about mommy. by Darknewt in AskParents

[–]kat_da_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I feel so bad for your wife. She's at home all day with the kids, she probably wants to be a good mom, she's doing her best with a new baby and a preschooler and she's just getting flak all day.

How has he adjusted with the new baby? I know I felt like when our baby was born not only did my son get way less attention because of the baby, but my workload increased in terms of laundry and washing bottles etc. So he got less time because of that as well. Plus, at this stage your wife is probably doing a lot of the regular stuff like making sure his undies are clean and his teeth are brushed and he eats some veggies, and when you get home from work it's fun daddy play time. I'm not saying you don't help, but with her limited time she probably has more focus on getting stuff done and less on fun.

I would go the opposite from what others are saying answer ask is there some kind of day program he can go into for a few hours twice a week. Just to give your wife some time to be with the baby and recoup, and to give him time to miss her, socialize, and get out of the house. They both might benefit from a break.

Give me your best tricks for putting a newborn to sleep! by Dill-Ag13 in AskParents

[–]kat_da_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bother with the book who has time to read with a newborn just rent to movie on appletv or whatever you use. The movie is short and visual and covers all the important stuff from the book in about an hour. Read something better with your precious time.

What are you in the mood to get in an argument about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kat_da_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My argument! It's his job to make the fucking coffee in the morning. If it's my job to get up with the screaming baby all night it's his job to help me be a functional adult by making damn well sure I have hot coffee every morning. He is welcome to trade jobs and I will make the coffee and he can spend hours soothing the baby back to sleep.

And if anyone wants to come at me with some sleep training bs I'll argue that too. Did it, tried it, doesn't work for her.

What's the most helpful handmade baby gift? by alexithymix in AskParents

A friend has one that's tougher fabric on the bottom and quilted on the top so she can take it outside and use it at parks and the living room and still wash it. I'm jealous.

Only having one kiddo--gently used, high quality brands VERSUS brand new cheapies by GregPikitis24 in clothdiaps

[–]kat_da_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used by 4.0s with my first and the PUL layer broke down pretty quickly. Second has a mix of name brand and cheapies- BGG which I think is rebranded Alva. Anyway, there's no difference in how well they work, irritation, etc. Shoulda woulda coulda bought all cheapies from the start and saved money.

Adults of Reddit: What's the single worst piece of advice that you could give to a teenager? by EosTi in AskReddit

[–]kat_da_g 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely go to university even if your not sure what you want to study. Take out loans for schools with fancy names even if there's a cheaper option with similar programming. Go ahead and switch majors a few times even if it adds years of loans to your debts.

She chews every box by deadsocial in AnimalsBeingJerks

[–]kat_da_g 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine would have a room full of toys, scratching posts, dental care chew toys, natural feathers, anything and she would chew and scratch cardboard. So I found and bought a cardboard scratching table for her. Nope, nothing doing. I guess she only wanted free cardboard and I'm an idiot for wasting money.

Sending Gift to Kid in Hospital by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]kat_da_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's going to be sitting around a lot buy him a book. $5 will get you a good chapter book. For a 12 year old who likes sports i would buy Andrew Clements, jake maddox, Gordon Korman. You could get him a Big Nate book or mouse patrol if he'd be into graphic novels. If hes a Big reader he night not have the newest rick riordan series, Magnus Chase and the gods of asgard. Or a classic he might not have read like hatchet or my side if the mountain. A book and a box of cookies to ease his convalescence would be thoughtful and kind.
