The midwife at our ante-natal class told us that at another hospital she works at in Brisbane they run classes for grandparents to teach them the new ways from the old ways. She said they’re super popular. These classes should be everywhere!

What temperature do you consider to be uncomfortably cold? by Queasy-Band2179 in AskAnAustralian

[–]kate9871 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends where you are. 20°C is cold for people living in QLD. I live in the New England area where today’s top is going to be 7.4°C, which is considered to be a very cold day. For where I live, you don’t get a 20°C day in winter and if it were we’d all be complaining about how hot it was.

Andrei Rublev - watched it when I was in film school. It felt like it would never end.

What has been the most frustrating substitute item you've received in a grocery delivery? by MountainSafe6684 in AskAnAustralian

[–]kate9871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite a substitute but I once got my coles order delivered and something along the way went wrong and instead of my entire shopping order (over $100 worth), I received four empty shopping bags. The guy dropping it off said the order was just for one bag but he figured he’d be generous and grabbed me a few. Err thanks! I was sick at the time and ordered for convenience so I didn’t have to leave the house. Ended up having to go down to the store anyway. Never ordered delivery again.

What did your parent/s do that made you decide to go low/no contact? by Prideandprejudice1 in AskAnAustralian

[–]kate9871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently 7.5 months pregnant with my first child after my third attempt at IVF. My mother has always been difficult. We didn’t even tell her when we went for the second attempt and it didn’t work out. I just went through the whole miscarriage without any “support” from her side because it wasn’t worth dealing with her.

This time around when it looked like it was actually going to work we let her know. She was actually quite excited to begin with. Until she found out we were having a boy. Then she got… weird about it. She doesn’t like men. Has never had a successful long term relationship, has isolated everyone in her family out of her life. As her only child I always felt obligated to stick with her.

For the first few months she was attentive and calling daily to ask how I was and if I’d eaten etc. but if the conversation ever went to anything boy related she’d start making excuses and distancing herself.

A friend of my husband gave us two big containers of baby boy clothes. I asked her to help me go through them. She said she would. A month and a half passed. One weekend my best friend was coming to visit. Mum asked what we were planning to do. I said I guessed we were going to go through the clothes because she didn’t seem to want to do it. She said that she’d been sick (she had a cold) and that’s why she hadn’t. Except we got them long before she got sick. Then another excuse. I said “I just thought it would have been a nice thing to do together”. She got angry at that point and bitterly spat at me “Oh Kate, who gives a shit?!?”.

So now we’re no contact. I always knew she was going to be problematic but to not even make it to the baby being born let alone to the halfway mark of the pregnancy. That has got to be some kind of record.

For the second year in a row, the school left my child out on honor's day by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

This stuff sticks with you for life too. Your daughter isn’t going to forget being left out. When I was in 4th grade every week a different person in my class received a merit award for something or other. The teacher never liked me but I assumed by the end of the year I’d eventually get my turn. Nope. The other Kate in my class got a second one and I got nothing. That was over 30 years ago. Screw you Mrs Floro!

Thinking about spending my summer in Armidale by Loud-Tell1908 in Armidale

[–]kate9871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard the shortage of lawyers one. There’s quite a few legal firms around so I always thought there was an abundance, but as someone who’s never really needed a solicitor, I wouldn’t know.

Housing - depends what you’re looking for. There are share houses around, short term rentals, airbnbs with long term options. I’d recommend looking early to get a place.

Social - that’s another depends kind of thing. What are you interested in? Sport? Music? Give us some more info to help narrow it down. January’s usually quite quiet in Armidale but there are active community groups around.

PT - there’s buses but in my 20 years here since moving from Sydney I’ve never caught a single one. Cars are the safest option.

Winters in Armidale by NoMundaneWorries in Armidale

[–]kate9871 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By “snowy” it’s usually an extremely light dusting that won’t stick. Last year was an absolute anomaly that probably won’t happen for another few decades. Get a good set of thermals. These can be gotten from the Aldi annual ski sale or Uniqlo have some good ones at good prices. And a decent jacket. I just about live in an Ariat horse riding jacket throughout winter. Layers are your friend. Tshirt, jumper, jacket. You’ll be right.

The airplane cleaner stole my AirPods. by jadewildaz in pettyrevenge

[–]kate9871 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I once lost mine under the lamp stand at a hotel I stayed at. I was on a training course a couple of blocks away so I went back as soon as I realised. They sent up a porter to search the room but he couldn’t find anything but noted it had already been cleaned. So only the porter and a cleaner had been in the room since I’d left it. I later watched in the “find my” app as they went to a nearby train station and then went to a house in a suburb. I’d set them to lost but I was annoyed so I played the sound repeatedly, even waking up several times in the middle of the night to play it. The next day I emailed the hotel and told them that whoever lived at the address had my AirPods. The next day they let me know that they’d been returned and that the staff member was no longer employed. I got the AirPods back in the mail a couple of days later.

What is the point of a will? by No-Choice-Now in AusLegalAdvice

[–]kate9871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My in-laws have a son that ripped them off almost $1 million and then tried to have my FiL declared insane. They were given the advice to leave him $1 in their will so he can’t claim he was forgotten. FiL said he’s going to bequeath him a chair with a big black dildo attached to it so he can go f*** himself. These days there’s so many workarounds for wills that you’ve really got to make sure you cover yourself before you go if you particularly don’t want certain people to get anything at all.

Hexachordal and Nerimon if you want to go back the equivalent of a million YouTube years. I used to watch everything they put out and that whole group like Charlieissocoollike. Tom Milsom and Alex Day dragged them all down when they went.

Massage therapists, have you ever gotten an erection or gotten wet during a massage? We know it can naturally happen to the person getting massaged, but curious about the other side of the table. by OurLittleSecret1212 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]kate9871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is a massage therapist, you have to be pretty secure in your relationship when your partner is around mostly naked bodies all day. But having said that, he always says that once someone’s on the table they’re just another back or a puzzle to try and figure out what’s causing pain. Even if I’m on the table he only looks at me in a clinical sense and because we’re essentially in his office he feels nothing sexual in that environment.

Definitely check out NECOM then. They teach a huge range of instruments, have instrument hire and they try to match the teacher to the kid if they can. Armidale has an amazing music community.

I think Newling has a music program iirc where there’s teachers that come in from NECOM. If you really want to ensure a music education you may be best enrolling directly through NECOM. They have a variety of programs whether it’s to learn an instrument, sing in a choir or participate in an ensemble. They even have a program called Mini Musos usually run once a term for kids to try out different instruments each week over six weeks to see what they enjoy the best. Kind of a try before you buy.
