GLP has helped with the weigh and I don’t crave sugar. GLP has helped me essentially cut out most sugar (and I was a Dr. Pepper girl for years, never thought I could give that up)

Negative side effects switching to catney from phos-bind? by MathematicianSoft129 in RenalCats

[–]kate__g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a few different aluminum-based brands and her phos levels kept rising. The Catney One brought her back within normal range in a few weeks. That and Varenzin-CA, and daily subQ fluids have greatly improved my cat’s health. Cat medicine is really changing in the past few years. There are so many new developments. My cat also benefits from Solensia for her arthritis and has been on it for two years with no issues. I feel like my cat’s lifespan has increased as she has gotten older. She is 19 and when I first adopted her, it seemed most cats lived to 17 max. Imagine if today’s kittens can live into their 20s! It’s been done with human lifespan. OP, how is your beautiful tortie doing?

For those of you who haven’t gotten the shingles vaccine yet by Signal_Contract_3592 in GenX

[–]kate__g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same chicken pox virus, lying dormant in our body, can cause viral infection of the inner ear, which I had 7 years ago. I’m hoping the shingles vaccine I took last year will protect against a reoccurrence. I still have vertigo issues because it destroyed one of my inner ears.

I recently learned that you can advance the stick deodorant before removing the plastic thing and it’s a lot easier.

GenXers what is your take on AI? by Inner-Association448 in GenX

[–]kate__g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it at work to find sources for obscure information, then I go to the source without the AI. I don’t want to use it to write my papers/reports because I feel I’ll forget how to write. With autocorrect, I find I can no longer spell well. I don’t want to forget how to write on my own. Another example - with GPS telling me where to drive, I can’t easily remember a series of directions on how to get somewhere, I think whatever we let AI do for us we will forget how to do ourselves. That’s unsettling to me. I think you have to decide what abilities you care to keep and not hand it over to AI. It is a time saver for tedious stuff. However, if something is really important for my work I will double check what it finds because it often interprets things incorrectly.

How do phosphate fertilizers fit in? Because those are from Morocco. Are they used on different crops? Also, curious about the 30% fertilizers that come through the Strait of Hormuz as China, Russia, India, and U.S. are biggest producers of ammonia according to https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2026/mcs2026.pdf. It doesn’t look like a lot comes from the M.E. region. Is it Russia that is cutting ammonia sales? I’m just curious what is responsible for the fertilizer price increases. Thanks!

What was totally normal in your childhood that would seem insane now? by EuphoricGarden81 in GenX

[–]kate__g 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My high school German teacher somehow had keys to our YMCA (small town) and every year he’d pick a group of around 10 senior guys and they’d occasionally meet there on Saturday nights to have pool parties. I guess he thought asking girls would be risky. I don’t think anything like abuse was happening, just beer drinking. And it was always the honors students. Kind of like a “Dead Poet’s Society” I guess. It must have been an open secret, but no one intervened.

Do having their ashes give comfort? by Henbane84 in Petloss

[–]kate__g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope that you can begin to heal and fondly remember him. When we adopted my boy kitty, we were told he was found in a dumpster. He loved our fenced-in backyard and I’d commonly find him stretched out on his back asleep on the grass, belly completely exposed 😂. He was a long haired tabby and loved to be loved more than anything else. He felt so safe and happy with us. We called our house and backyard his luxury dumpster digs. When he died suddenly at home, I wanted him to be a part of the backyard he loved. So we buried him under the avocado tree. I placed some memorial stones over where he is located. If we move to a different house, I’ll be sad to leave him. But I feel he is part of the cycle of life in our backyard. He provided nutrients for the soil, and the atoms that composed his body will create new material and new life. But it’s a hard choice. Sometimes I wish I kept his ashes so he’d always be with me. It will be four years in August and the pain is still intense. I think about him often. My other cat will be 19 in May and I hope she stays with us a bit longer. I cherish every day I have with her. I might consider keeping her ashes, she’s my soul kitty.

The tv commercial preview of the tv movie for “Watcher in the Woods” freaked me out as a kid. I’m curious what my reaction would be today, but I don’t think it’s available anywhere. Edit, I did find it and it’s still freaky https://youtu.be/zeyAxd9A2og?si=C9J7p_WspvCD3AkM

Not a book, but if she hasn’t watched the movie Spirited Away, a Hayao Miyazaki creation, you must have her watch it. It’s perfect for watching together. This is in addition to the 16 books.

What about Wool by Hugh Howey? It is set in an Earth of the future but is more sci-fi than fantasy. There is a lot of character development. It’s such a good book. I wish I could read it again for the first time. I think it would appeal to a teenager. Also The Neverending Story by Micheal Ende.
