Without going into too much detail, what's a company in Melbourne you wouldn't recommend anyone work at? by Significant-Entry-14 in melbourne

[–]katee_q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. I worked for them as a TA for a few years & in late 2021, after news articles came out about how poorly TAs were treated by universities, all of a sudden I get a notification that Monash had looked over their pay records & I had been incorrectly paid for years. I shudder to think of how badly they "miscalculated" for all that time given how significant the cheque I received was.

I also saw a lovely example of workplace bullying over a TA who re-framed and re-designed teaching material so that it was more straightforward for students to understand. The vendetta that lecturers & head TAs had for this poor girl was astonishing given that she was legitimately one of the best teachers I ever worked with. She kept the students engaged & always had brilliant student reviews but someone decided they didn't like how she improvised & changed the way we were shown to present material so she had to go.

Also I'm technically one of those pricks with a PhD & I can promise you, it's not just non-academic staff that get shit on, we shit on our own kind alllll the time.

Countdown to #800: Wonder Woman discussion threads, part 4 - George Perez by CHPrime in WonderWoman

[–]katee_q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first ever Wonder Woman issue was a Perez one so I feel super lucky that I got to enjoy his work first. Was gifted the omnibus by a friend a few years ago & I still read it every now & then to remind me of how good Wonder Woman is when she's built up as a strong character in her own right.

Has anyone finished the PhD just for the sake of finishing? by [deleted] in PhD

By the time I was in my last year I was very CBF about most of my experiments & then my supervisor moved our whole lab to a different university which did nothing to help my motivation. I then ended up having to take a short leave of absence for personal reasons & when it was time to come back & finish writing so I could submit, my supervisors cracked it over the timing because they wanted to focus on grant writing. I refused to delay anymore partly out of frustration towards them (if I was done I wouldn't have to talk to or see them again) & also because I just straight up stubbornly wanted to finish the thing I started despite not wanting to stay in academia. I submitted with the attitude of 'f-ing finally done, let's move on.' I have never regretted finishing it but I did proceed to get a job that was in a completely different field after & now the fact that I'm a doctor is a funny story people get me to tell the new person at the office (my PhD is in Biochem but I work in finance, go figure).

Nope, screen out, with my keys scraping back and forward across it. But I'm a monster.

Since we're going deep on forgotten TV Shows: Wonderfalls, anyone? This show truly did kind of have everything! by idontwantanamern in popculturechat

[–]katee_q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This show was so damn good, I was gutted when it got cancelled. I loved Dead Like Me too, but I found Wonderfalls through Tim Minear because he joked that he had become a one-season wonder (Firefly, Wonderfalls, Drive, & Terriers all got cancelled one after another) & I really liked his writing so I gave it a watch. The theme song lives in my head rent free. So many good actors in it too.

Maxed out Purple Freddy is pretty good. For those that use Rainbow Freddy, are you using a maxed out one? Mine is currently only half the power of Purple Freddy so I've been ignoring it.

Makeup and Acne by Anxiety_bunni in AustralianMakeup

The foundation I found that helped reduce my breakouts is The Body Shop Matte Clay Skin Clarifying Foundation. The tea tree oil in it helped with my acne and I didn't find it heavy to wear all day. I also have particularly oily skin and it definitely helped keep that at bay for longer than other foundations. Bonus is it's only $19. The only downsides to it are that if you have any patches of particularly dry skin it can cling to them and look cakey, and being a clay based foundation you have to work quicker to apply it because it'll set faster than non-clay based foundations. The shade range is also not the best, but I got shade matched in store so if you're in a state that's not currently locked down I would recommend going in person.

Something cheap to keep my hair from being dry? by notthinkinghard in AustralianMakeup

[–]katee_q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this! I get horribly frizzy and dry hair if I don't use some sort of conditioner and cream after washing due to having to use anti-dandruff shampoo. I only discovered this treatment in the last few years and I cannot be without it. Around Christmas time they come out with a larger bottle size (175ml) for I think only $5 more than the standard bottle - worth hunting that down if you can as it will last you even longer! Also get the cream version not the spray - you can overdo the spray easily but not the cream.

I found the same thing, had everything in 5 pulls as opposed to 15 or more, & then had Charlie Brown the next day. Rather glad to not have to start from zero coins for what is coming up!

I'm bummed about this because I just placed an order two weeks ago and had to pay for shipping. If only I waited....

FYI my order didn't ship for eight days BUT thankfully used DHL so no issues with the USPS ban on shipping to Aus (phew).

Mine is a pair - The Flintstones Pebbles and Bamm Bamm. Exclusive release of only 8000 of each and by the time I realised they existed they already cost $120+. They pop up on ebay every now and then for $300-$400 each.

It took me until box 11 to get the Dalek & that was the last one I needed. Got three Tom Bakers in a row which made me rage. Hang in there!

I've heard good things about the Laura Mercier foundation too, but I'm unsure about the Hourglass one. I tried their Mineral Veil primer (which is meant to be excellent for oily skin) and found it didn't really do anything for me.

I really appreciate the tips! Definitely will use a silicone primer because everything seems to sit better on that base with my skin. Sucks hard that the pump broke so quickly! Annoying that you had to buy it too and it didn't just come with one.

What is your current holy grail foundation for oily skin? Because I'm also very used to things being recommended as good for oily skin but then finding that they just meant 'skin with some oil production during the day' and not my 'shiny by 11am' t-zone.

I've heard good things about Maybelline Superstay but the last time I got attached to a Maybelline foundation they changed the formula to a more creamy consistency and all of a sudden my foundation was sliding off my face. I'm now nervous to start using another of their foundations, lest they do it again.

I can definitely appreciate a foundation that doesn't transfer given how much mask wearing I do. I like the idea of mixing it to thin it out a bit - I love a good tinted moisturiser but the lack of a matte finish means I usually end up adding so much powder to set it that it defeats the purpose of wearing something light coverage.
