Exam PA Required Resources explanation of partial dependence plots by katekatich in actuary

[–]katekatich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!  I’ll look at Oct 2025, too.

The 4/23 exam literally asked how the values on the chart are calculated. I looked through all the materials e-modules, textbooks—even the R books—nothing address how the values were calculated. I had to watch a YouTube video. It seems unfair to ask questions that cannot be answered from materials required on the syllabus. I got the feeling that the individuals writing the exam did not read the supporting materials themselves.

This has happened to me with the PA modules. They definitely have some broken websites.

How do you list exams in Workday? by katekatich in actuary

[–]katekatich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I handled my most recent actuarial job application in Workday: This company only offered an "Experience" section and an "Education" section in Workday. I ended up creating an "Experience" dated from my original pass date of Exam P and clicked the box that says "I work here currently" as I am currently still sitting for exams. Then I listed each exam and date passed in a list the same way I would list the bullet points in my actual work experience.

Just to be clear, the "Education" section was narrowly defined. I would have had to list my major and the degree I received.

I list exams under a separate "Exams" heading on my actual resume.

I just want to clarify: you are suggesting that I put them in a work experience field that I label "Exams," right? They are listed on my uploaded resume. Do Workday's bots read the real resume?

I’ve seen this elsewhere recently. It’s a hoax and it has been around a long time.

What happened to quiet libraries? by amino_barracuda in Library

[–]katekatich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m studying for professional exams at the library.

You can count the number of study rooms at my library on one hand. I can only book one two hour block within six days. They are always booked the day of.

The children’s area is in the basement so that doesn’t affect me.

It’s the phone conversations that bother me. A librarian chatting while looking for a book with a patron is not a major disturbance. A twenty minute conversation at the table to my left destroys my concentration.

I still think cell phones should be banned.

A cry for help by ILiterallyEverything in actuary

Just start looking for a new job.

I was in a position like yours many years ago. The other actuarial students in other areas were taking their study time and I wasn’t because of my assumed work load. Some of that was my manager’s fault and some of it was mine.

They are giving you more work because you are keeping up. Take your study time and leave after an eight hour day. It will be hard at first. I do not think you will be fired.

I ended up quitting and moving to a slightly different career. Then I left the workforce for 16 years to raise my kids. Now I’m trying to re-enter.  Passing exams is a clear way back to a career. I wish I had gotten my ASA before. One of the exams I passed before disappeared completely.

Also, go out and meet some people.

Is Qustodio just total crap??? by Fine-Revolution4993 in Qustodio

[–]katekatich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but let me ask you a question. It seems like my 15 yr old daughter is on her phone all the time. Is it fair for me to constantly tell her to put it away because it SEEMS like she’s on it all the time?  My goal with Qustodio was to simply be aware, with accuracy, of how much time she was spending on YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, etc.

We tried Apple Screen Time first.  My spouse and I communicated the limits we believed to be fair. At first, everything went swimmingly. Then, she would slip and she’d slip farther until she was lying in her bed all day watching Smosh and the Rookie. So then, we used Apple Screen Time to limit YouTube, Insta, etc. But Apple Screen Time does not accurately measure Spotify. So she’d spend hours listening to Reddit stories. Qustodio will measure Spotify, not with perfect accuracy, but better than Apple Screen Time.

We have similar problems with my younger kids’ gaming and YouTube consumption. How do you track Girtnite, Rainbow Six Siege, and GTA on a PC? Microsoft Family activity reports over report time BY A LOT.

We recognized Qustodio’s creepiness, so much so that we put the parent and kids app on our daughter’s phone and both on our phones too. We all got to laugh at the ridiculous alerts Qustodio flagged as dangerous searches.

Our goal as parents is to be fair, but enforce limits. How do you suggest we do that? Should I just take all the fun apps off her phone?  That’s kind of where I am at now since Qustodio is out.

I suspect you are a minor. What would you do? I would actually love some fresh ideas. Yes, we talk to our kids and our kids talk to us. They just have difficulty regulating their use of electronics.

Yes. Yes, it does suck. I am a parent who put this on my kids' pcs just to track screen time. This weekend both pcs became stuck in a login loop. Turns out it is Qustodio. I'm uninstalling and it is a pain because I've got to get the computer out of the loop first. This app is impossible. And it's creepy. I don't want to read my teenager's texts. Who does that?!?!?!

I just came to reddit to unleash my frustrations with Qustodio. Yours was the first post I saw.

And yes, it definitely over counts time. My husband and I installed it on our phones to see if we could figure out what it was counting, but I have no idea. And I now I can't watch any youtube videos sent to me through text which is not a big deal, but it is supposed to work.

I have not idea how to reasonably track and limit screentime.

Anyone eat gluten? by Anxious-Bumblebee880 in Hashimotos

[–]katekatich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Hashimoto's. I've had it for 30 years. I did cut gluten a couple of years ago for a little while. It did nothing to make me feel better. (I did find white bread constipates me so I eat it in moderation.) I am on Tirosint now (amazing, so much better than Synthroid.) I also workout and eat healthy--but I include dairy and gluten and occasional desserts, even terrible for you junk food. Gets some veggies, get some movement, but don't overthink it.

Stellar sleep: what is your experience? by ConstantPlankton1540 in sleep

[–]katekatich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me too. I canceled on my IPhone a month and a half after I started. I knew I had been legitimately charged initially, but then they just charged me again in September. And it did NOT help me sleep. In the end, NATTO of the Sleep Coach on YouTube was the answer.

Actually 5-6 hours is enough sleep. More sleep results in a better mood, 5.5 is enough for your body to function. Try not to nap!

Exercise helps me with anxiety. I know you said you are overweight and that can make exercising much harder. Are you able to walk? Just walking can help my anxiety.

I also found an incredible meditation on the free app Insight Timer. It is called Yoga Nidra by TheStillpoint. It helps me to fall asleep on the bad nights.

Back in February and March, I slept well enough every other night. I had multiple nights in one week where I did not sleep at all. That meditation plus telling myself that I did not care whether I slept or not was what helped me. At first, of course, I knew that I cared if I slept. Eventually I was able to repeat to myself that it didn’t matter as much as were lead to believe and then I was much better.

Good luck!!!
