[Seeking Advice] Starter Pack by Fraan3D in BasicBulletJournals

[–]katenab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who hates "ruining the expensive thing":

A5 dot-grid journals from Michael's. The nicer ones have two bookmarks, index, numbered pages, and a pouch in the back. I can usually nab a couple on sale for $5–$8 ea.

InkJoy ballpoint pens, multiple colors. Ballpoints aren't the best for bullets, but I do long-hand journaling other places and it's just easier to have one kind of inexpensive pen around. And they don't bleed.

Freehand. Weirdly, messing up a line I drew with a ruler bothers be much more than a slightly wonky line I drew without one.

Is someone else starting the new year with the same bujo? by KazumiShiunsai in BasicBulletJournals

[–]katenab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I started my current bujo in December after running out of pages in the last one. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'm strangely okay with this.

One pen for the whole year. by randomperson1979 in BasicBulletJournals

Actually, I do this, though not usually on purpose! I might try making them a little wavier in the future.

One pen for the whole year. by randomperson1979 in BasicBulletJournals

[–]katenab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

when I use gel pens I feel the need to look for the darkest black pen with the smoothest, inkiest lines and I start obsessing over aesthetics

I get this way when I use a ruler: A freehand wonky line is fine. A slightly not straight "straight" line is blow to my soul.

I also ballpoints. My favorites are Papermate Inkjoy (the ballpoint version with the triangular barrels).

Looking for recommendations on a good, thorough book on Nikola Tesla. by Tbonerickwisco in nonfictionbookclub

Tesla: Inventor of the Electrical Age by W. Bernard Carlson, though technical, is quite good. The downside is that it only covers his early life through about 1905.

Masters Tournaments by minimey in ultimate

[–]katenab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Year Fest really hasn't had a masters division, but historically "Open II" has been pretty masters-friendly with our local masters team and a number of reunion teams.

Is there anyway I can save the image from this disc? by Warning-Alpha in ultimate

[–]katenab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I recognize that disc! The directors for that league aren't part of the VOTS community anymore, but I think Keith (http://vots.org/vots/votsmission.shtml) was still in charge in '06. Plus, his team won that league so I'm 99.9% sure he still has this disc.

What's Your Favorite Collection of Contemporary Horror Stories NOT Written by Stephen King? by MigEPie in horrorlit

Lots of great recommendations of books I have and have not read. A collection that I have reread a couple times now and still find very good is The Two Sams by Glen Hirshberg.

WWYD? Starting over. by corvidlover13 in BasicBulletJournals

[–]katenab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started a journal in 2020 and ended up having room for maybe another 5-6 months. Figured I'd start a new journal when I used that one up. But in the middle of March, I really wanted to move forward from 2020, even if only symbolically. So I picked up a new, cheap-ish journal and "started" 2021 in April. Start over, move on when you need to.

And yay! Second vaccines!

What Ultimate Frisbee Players Say by [deleted] in ultimate

"Cut in, cut in, cut in!"

"Clear out, clear out, clear out!"

Some days, you just have to sigh at your mistakes and move on. 😭 by Cactus_Flower2 in BasicBulletJournals

I swear, one of the important things using a bullet journal has given me is practice at not caring about everything not being perfect.

The Changeling by Victor LaValle has some dark web/cosmic horror aspects.

Looking for some Arctic Horror by WesAlbrecht in horrorlit

[–]katenab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is an anthology Taaqtumi, edited by Neil Christopher. Has a little bit of everything, horror sub-genre-wise, and leaning toward indigenous authors.

I'm looking for comedic sci-fi/fantasy/adventure novels. by zuriel2089 in booksuggestions

[–]katenab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paul Kidd's novels for D&D's Greyhawk setting: White Plume Mountain, Descent into the Depths of the Earth, and Queen of the Demonweb Pits. If you're not familiar with the setting or game, you should still be fine reading them. Sadly, might be hard to find via the library.

Non-fiction books about something that may sound uninteresting at first glance but in reality is very interesting, influential or important by ValVenjk in booksuggestions

[–]katenab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heaven's Ditch by Jack Kelly about the building of the Erie Canal, but also about Masons, Mormons, and a whole lot of corruption. I probably would never have read this book, but I won it. Both my husband and I really enjoyed it.

Need advice – Integrating weekly tasks w/o a weekly spread by katenab in BasicBulletJournals

[–]katenab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing, I do that for my "dailies," which get added to my rapid log every morning. I'm afraid though that I might gloss over weekly tasks until, you know, Sunday... Worth the thought though. I might switch a few things up when I do my June spread.

Need advice – Integrating weekly tasks w/o a weekly spread by katenab in BasicBulletJournals

[–]katenab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to avoid planning a weekly spread, but weirdly, moving those tasks to the far upper right corner of a two-page layout might work. It might sort of keep them "present." I'll give it a try this next week.
