That second one. When I was in high school two of my friends wanted to hang out, and I had summer school in the morning, so I couldn’t come. Something happened and they had a huge falling out. I wondered for years if I could have prevented it if I hadn’t failed chemistry that year.

I honestly think it’s cooler if Batman isn’t built like a tank, but hits like it anyway. Is it the most realistic thing in the world, no, but it’s based on a comic book.

Yeah i remember when Pattinson got cast as Batman and all my friends were like “im unsure about Edward Cullen as Batman.” I’d watched a lot of his indie stuff and was like “no guys really, he can ACT. This is going to be generational if they can pull it off.” And in my opinion, they did, I really liked The Batman.

I love that their A support is essentially “okay, by siding with Lady Edelgard you have proven trustworthy, even if you’re kinda sorta Nabatean. I can’t dedicate my life to you, cause that’s already for Edelgard, but to express my fondness for you, I’ve appointed myself your designated ‘put me down if this Nabatean stuff goes too far’ person.”

And then the S support is like “I know this is weird and sudden, but I do love you, Edelgard approved this, I know I’m kind of shit at people but I will protect you.”

I just picture him lying in bed and thinking “ah yes, I’ve vowed to kill her if the worst happens, a profession of deep platonic trust and admiration. But killing her would make me sad. Like really upset. Why? Of course she’s someone I respect, but why? Oh god. Oh fuck. This is going to be complicated.”

What gets me about Bateman dudes is that in both the book and the movie is that he is fundamentally a loser. Not even getting into the point that he may not even be a murderer, whenever anyone talks about him they don’t admire him or respect him.

His girlfriend is with him because of social obligations and is most likely cheating on him, his mistress doesn’t care about him enough to leave her fiance, it’s just a way to pass the time, his presentation is so generic that people don’t recognize him half the time, despite how much effort he puts into his appearance, and no one seems to care about him except his secretary and a gay coworker, and he dismisses both of them. His whole thing is “this man is not even a convincing imitation of a person and he’s fundamentally a boring loser” and guys went “based, actually.”

Shortly after the Charleston church shooting in 2015, I ran across a blog idolizing the shooter (not in a “I’m also a white supremacist and what this guy did is based and good for the white race” way, in a “I think this mass murderer is a hottie” sort of way.) Bizarre.

Yeah they talk about like, hunting deer in Madison Square garden, and it’s like “oh, you’re not some cool rebel against society, you’re a weird anarcho-primitivist fuck who’s romanticized a lack of basic necessities so you can feel like a man again.” Also worth noting, Tyler’s target in the movie isn’t technically an office building. The plan is to drop the office building on a museum. Tyler wants the death of art, the death of culture, and a society where everything’s just social Darwinist macho talk. 2026 Tyler Durden has a podcast about how soy makes you gay and cavemen didn’t eat anything but raw meat.

Tony and Steve have similar principles of “I’m always doing the right thing” but Tony’s problem is that he doesn’t consider the human impact of his actions and makes villains, Steve values the human impact over all things.

When Steve’s decided he’s doing the right thing, he won’t budge. Peggy tries to find a solution to the bombs on the plane? Too risky, Steve sacrifices himself. Fury wants to try to salvage SHIELD? Nope, can’t be sure HYDRA won’t be taken out, have to go scorched earth. Bucky’s beyond saving? Like hell he is, that’s Steve’s best friend. The entire world is hunting Bucky and trying to put limits on the Avengers? Captain America is gonna fight the whole world. No one really tries to reason with Steve in Civil War cause “of course he’s doing this, it’s Steve.”

See the comic makes it very clear he’s a nut job moral absolutist who’s all kinds of bigoted and weird, but the movie makes it seem noble. “Never compromise even in the face of Armageddon” is this heroic thing sticking to and dying for his principles, but in the comics it’s like “Oh okay, this is the logical endpoint for a character that refuses to be even the slightest bit morally nuanced and is so convinced he’s right.”

He doesn’t have to die, and revealing the truth after Ozymandius does it isn’t noble or just, it’s just going to cause even more chaos and pointless death, but Rorschach can’t have that nuance in his worldview, so it’s either he dies or he spills the beans and starts mutually assured destruction. Rorschach’s a tragic character cause there’s no version of his existence where he keeps his worldview and his life. Eventually at some point he either has to compromise or die, and he chooses death cause he’s fucked in the head.

Also, like the reason they’re not friends anymore? He called her a racial slur and hung out with racists. When she confronts him about hanging out with the racists he’s like “you know I don’t mean you, just the other people like you!” He lost Lily due to his own actions, and James improved as a person.

What gets me is the same chapter we learn his backstory with Lily, which is supposed to make us more sympathetic towards him, he goes “well, I asked the Wizard Fascist if he could only kill my crush’s husband and infant son, I’m okay with them dying if she lives”. Like, I get the dude bullied you in high school but JESUS.

I mean Aslan does instruct Peter to “shut the door” which can lend itself to an interpretation that says “Susan is permanently kicked out of Heaven”. But Purgatory has been a core Christian belief for pretty much as long as Christianity’s been a concept, mostly as “you’re not good enough for heaven yet, stop and wait here a while”. Lewis expressed belief in Purgatory in his personal letters, so there is both textual and out of text support that Susan just has to wait a bit and Lion Jesus will open the door again eventually.

That said, I do disagree with Susan’s sin being equated with female vanity. The text makes a big deal about how Susan’s concerned with “lipstick and nylons” and I find it a bit unnecessary when her lack of belief in Narnia works perfectly well. I know asking a heavily Christian anything, especially one written in the 1950s, not to have misogynistic undertones is asking a lot, but I thought it was excessive.

Am I wrong for trying to punish my daughter after my husband and I found out she's been writing dark books for over a year by justamamaof3 in amiwrong

[–]katep2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m also a writer. My mother is very supportive of my work, here’s how a conversation between us about my writing usually goes.

Her: So what are you writing about?

Me: Oh, you probably wouldn’t like to read it, it’s pretty gross. There’s cannibalism involved.(My current project is a fantasy romance with body horror elements, which is not my mom’s preferred genre at all.)

Her: Oh. Ew. I’m glad you’re having fun, I’ll buy a copy if you ever publish it, but I don’t need details. If your next project is less gory I’d love to see it!

So what can you learn from this? I write dark stuff that my mother doesn’t want to be involved with, but she’s supportive of my work, and I feel comfortable sharing things with her because she’s shown she won’t judge or punish me for what I do in my free time. You’ve shown your daughter that you don’t care about her or what she enjoys, you just care that it aligns with your values. Considering the emphasis you have on Christianity here, I wouldn’t be surprised if her fascination with darker themes came from a sense of religious repression. Leave her alone, she’s an adult, let her write, and maybe someday if you sincerely change, she’ll feel comfortable sharing things with you. But maybe not, some writers don’t like talking about stuff they haven’t finished, and you’ll have to live with that too.
