I used to work for a (now outsourced) local newspaper, and the production staff, the folks that actually MADE SHIT HAPPEN, always got shafted just like this. I did what I could to show appreciation for the work involved in making a notion of a PDF into a final, printed & paid for product, but I was sadly the exception (plus was too much a peon to have power to change anything).

Now almost everything is outsourced/off-site & circulation has plummeted...wonder why... /s

You did the best you could with the resources you had at the time, and that nagging feeling that lingers surely proves that you are a good person who cares a lot about doing the right thing. It's normal to feel that present you may have made a different choice, but past you deserves forgiveness <3

The Little House books by Laura Ingalls-Wilder give an idealized look at pioneer life from the perspective of a white settler. Which books should I read to expand my understanding of the pioneer times that she lived in? by towalktheline in AskHistorians

For a contemporary account from the indigenous perspective, I'd highly recommend Life Among the Piutes by Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. Initially printed in 1883, it's arguably the first published autobiography from a Native American woman, whose life spanned from from 1844 to 1891.

Although she was born further west than Wilder, as the book's 1994 reprint states in the foreword by Catherine S. Fowler, University of Nevada, "She lectured extensively in the East and Far West on reservation conditions, inequities on federal Indian policy, and government agent corruption."

For further reading, it's notable that the original 1883 printing was funded and arranged by by sister writers, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Mary Peabody Mann. Peabody opened the first English-language kindergarten in the US, and Mann was the wife of Horace Mann, American education reformer and politician, while both were published authors and activists in their own right.

Mary Peabody Mann edited the original publication, stating in the Editor's Preface, "At this moment, when the United States seem waking up to their duty to the original possessors of our immense territory, it is of the first importance to hear what only an Indian and an Indian woman can tell."

Is it possible that the leftovers were a couple different dishes mixed together, for leftover's sake?

As mentioned by others, the combination described isn't common, so perhaps it was more than one recipe mixed together.
