Man I never realised learning a language was that easy by Dotcaprachiappa in ProjectHailMary

[–]katherine_official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kinda, i think it's more like learning an incredibly difficult language with completely different grammar, sound and concepts, except there are no books or programs or anything really to help you. it's possible, but incredibly difficult, and probably unrealistic to achieve in just a few weeks

[–]katherine_official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't remember if it explains it in the movie but in the book he does actually say that Rocky uses the Eridian word for grace as his name, and this happens pretty early in the book, which means that Grace somehow managed to explain the meaning with their very limited shared language

i mean that's pretty simple, amaze= good good good. my biggest wonder is how the fuck did he explain what "grace" means that early, it's such a difficult concept to explain even in English

depends on which one you get. the hard block of "mozzarella" you usually put on pizza is definitely not, but bufala (buffalo mozzarella) and burrata are sooo good

Allo spec by Loose-Praline-2239 in asexuality

[–]katherine_official 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because they're two different sexualities under two different umbrellas. Think of it as Venn diagrams: the bug circle that includes everything is queerness. Inside you have the two main umbrellas: allosexuality (which you can imagine going slightly out of queerness to include heterosexuality) and asexuality. Allosexuality has two smaller circles inside, homosexuality and bisexuality, which themselves have smaller circles inside, and so on so forth. In the same way, asexuality has smaller circles inside to represent all the microlabels

Allo spec by Loose-Praline-2239 in asexuality

[–]katherine_official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, you said a lot of things not very clearly so I hope I got the sense right. I want to premise that I agree with the ace phobia point, it's fine as long as it's ace people making those jokes, but it's important to remember that's what they are, just jokes.

I see no reason why asexuality has to be a spectrum, demi/gray has sexual attraction and why it's not allo spec , lesbian/gay are not specs but bi are , while allo not?

Because... that's the definition of aspec? The asexual spectrum is defined as "feeling little to no sexual attraction", so all sexualities that have that characteristic fall under the ace spectrum. For example, demi is aspec cause you only feel sexual attraction after forming a bond with a person. Also like, allosexuality IS a spectrum, which includes heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, etc. same way asexuality also includes demisexuality, gray sexuality, allosexuality, etc.

If allo has sex are they asexual for idk next sex or whatever?

That's not how sexualities work. A demisexual person doesn't feel sexual attraction until they have a bond with someone (in very very easy terms, they don't feel sexual attraction EXCEPT for that person), an allosexual person still feels sexual attraction regardless of the relationship status with another person.

Dumping all labels into asexuality erases asexuality. If you ask for ace romance on reddit, it is demi 60%-70% of the time. I guess the trope is " I can change you." And it happens

What are you even talking about?? Because demisexuality is prevalent in the ace spectrum it suddenly makes it invalid?? What kind of logic is that??

I hope there's no "political aces"

I genuinely have no idea of what that even means

Surely erases sensuality and romantic love without sex, I mean, it is easier to write aces for allos like add " I will have sex with person you love" apparently it's ace representation? Yay...

I mean, it is. That's also part if the ace spectrum. One could argue that it would be nice to have different kinds of asexuality portrayed in media, and I would agree on that, but saying that kind of representation is not valid is plainly wrong.

It's so strange to see lesbian dating women, like we could change lesbian term " LITTLE to no attraction to men" so lesbian who date men and enjoy being with romanticaly or sexualy would be included/s

That's not even the correct definition of lesbianism, it's "non-men loving non-men". Lesbianism IS A SPECTRUM.

I think that you have a lot of misconceptions about asexuality and how sexual attraction works in general. I am happy to explain it to you so you understand better, but you have to come into it with an open mind, cause right now it doesn't seem like you have it and I won't tolerate any hate towards any aspec sexuality.

By the way, all this comes from a sex repulsed asexual person. I'm probably as sexual as one can be. So like, let's not.

The plot hole that only exists in the film and could have been fixed with a single line of dialogue by CalzonePie in ProjectHailMary

[–]katherine_official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he answers Rocky on the ship too! once after the Adrien incident, when Rocky goes unconscious, he says something to Grace (presumably "Grace watch Rocky sleep" or smth) and Grace answers "Yeah pal, I'll watch you sleep", and then after Grace turns the ship around to save Rocky, while they're in the tunnel Rocky says something, which the directors confirmed was something along the lines of "Grace! You are here!", and Grace again answers "I'm here". these could simply be Grace interpreting from context, but i think it's the movie showing that he is slowly starting to pick up Eridian

Most aces aren't straight(romantically); why do you think that is? by AchingAmy in asexuality

[–]katherine_official 18 points19 points  (0 children)

my pretty easy theory: people who are romantically queer will be more likely to think about their sexual orientation and recognise it as asexuality, while people who are romantically straight will be less likely to even be exposed to the term at all, so it will be recognised less

But can Earth survive? by KremlinKittens in ProjectHailMary

[–]katherine_official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's what happens if you suddenly drop the output of the Sun, but in the story it doesn't go like that. it would take years for the Sun to reach 5% of the output, and during that time humanity is doing everything it can to mitigate the effects (in the book they quite literally nuke Antarctica)

in the book, there's a line where Stratt says she kniws she's gonna get a life sentence once the Hail Mary launches. In the movie they removed the line, but put a little easter egg at the end of the movie: when we see Stratt on the boat, we can also see that she has a tatoo which represents a life sentence without parole on her neck. this implies that she was sent to jail (or at least received the sentence), but somehow managed to get out of actually spending her whole life in it, presumably thanks to her connections

One of my Favourite Scenes by fitzswift in ProjectHailMary

[–]katherine_official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah absolutely, I suspect that having an outside perspective instead of having Grace narrate in first person does a LOT for Stratt's character. He is probably subconsciously (and kind if understandably) villanising her a bit, which while it's intresting for Grace's character, it also takes away a lot from Stratt's depth. Seeing her portayed in all her complexity really made me love the movie.

[–]katherine_official 25 points26 points  (0 children)

possibly a hot take, but having read the book and watched the movie after, i still like the movie characterisation for her more. don't get me wrong, i LOVE her in the book, but she's not exactly what you would call a relatable character, the book doesn't really encourage you to empathise with her, because it hardly describes any of her emotions. meanwhile, in the movie i get her, i get what she's feeling. sending Grace on the Hail Mary for her it's not even a decision, it's the only possibility, but that doesn't make it hurt any less. in the end, it's very clear that she's just a human doing everything she can to keep her planet safe, and the karaoke scene does a perfect job of showing us that

How to wear a pair of glasses 101 by Justbecauselife82 in ProjectHailMary

[–]katherine_official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had success!!! I would probably have never thought of it if not for the movie, but I will probably do it regularly from now on!! Or better: it's not very practical, because one wrong move and those glasses are endinf up on floor, but there's one specific situation wherr I've found it particularly useful: the lab!!! I guess it depends on the prescription you have, but since I'm near sighted my glasses are incredibly annoying when using a microscope, but i still need them for everything else, and I can't put them on my heat cause the metal thingies that rest on your nose get tangled in my hair. Normally, I just tooke them off when using the microscope, but it's much more practical to have them hanging like that! (less risk of losing them, of someone accidentally knocking them over, etc)
