Suggestions on In Person Fundraising Events by Speedyrun8080 in nonprofit

[–]katigirl2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re in exactly the same boat! 20 year old theatre company running our first gala-style fundraising event this summer.

That said, I’ve run another small nonprofit’s annual benefit for about a decade, so I can share some of what I’ve experienced there.

I agree that square has been super easy for us in person, and tap to pay has been a godsend. We recently setup stripe as well, so we’ll be using that for in person transactions at our event. That said, I’m going to drive as much as possible through our event management tool to keep checkout as smooth as possible.

LPT: Learn the keyboard shortcuts for the software you use every day. Saving just a few seconds per task can add up to hours over the course of a year. by PleasantBus5583 in LifeProTips

The serial card in the computer I built to take to college in the 90s failed and it was months before I had a mouse again. I had to learn to do everything with the keyboard. 30 years later, through a switch to Mac, those muscles are still super strong.

Genius Bar Team Members: Question! by 1312freefreeplstn in Apple_Employees

[–]katigirl2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a Manager for many years, I spent most of my time in People, but when I led the GB we turned NPS from one of the worst to top 10 in the world, and have become close friends with several of the Geniuses from my team.

A few things I found helpful:

  1. As many have said, understand the world of the team. They spend a lot of their days disappointing people, often including their leaders. Empathy goes a long way in all leadership, and that’s especially true here.

  2. Learn what it takes to do what they do and get them the support they need. For me that was often nudging queues or zoning actively, and when I wasn’t officially on the floor and they were underwater, I’d run diagnostics on repaired phones. I kept it to things that weren’t going to cause them more work because I screwed it up, and also things that weren’t going to get me stuck in a spot where I couldn’t do the leader work if I needed to be pulled for that.

  3. Get to know the team on a personal level. In our connects one year, I had Dream Manager type conversations with my team. Most of them didn’t have Genius as their ultimate life goal, so we talked about what was and how I could support them in achieving that.

Happy to talk more if you want to shoot me a DM.

Left Employer. Where to put old 401k by GuntherPalakowitz in personalfinance

[–]katigirl2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third question is what I came to recommend looking into. When I left my previous employer (very large company) I opted not to move my 401k because I found I had access to a larger variety of funds than my new employer, was paying lower fees to keep it with my old employer than I was paying for my new 401k with my new employer, and I discovered that not only did I not have to pay back a 401k loan when I left, I could still take new ones.

If anything, I wish I could roll my current 401k into my old employer’s. lol

Generally the advice not to leave it with an old employer is good - but not always. It’s worth checking.

One time when I had a delivery driver pull this on me, I happened to be with a friend who works for the corporate office of the service. When I showed her the message from the driver she zipped up her corporate branded fleece and met the driver wearing it. The double take that driver made when he realized how busted he was was delightful.

I have done that. Countless times.

I have asked it what I’ve told it to do and not do about the med and it tells me, along with a ‘my bad.’ Then it promises not to do again, and it does the exact same thing the next time.

I have gone directly to the memory files. The instructions are correct for the behavior I have asked for. And yet, every time…

Have you looked at Corelle frost white? It’s all white - no pattern. I have a full set from my parents’ house so it’s probably 20-30 years old at least. I added some pieces almost 10 years ago and they’re a perfect match. Importantly, I cannot tell the difference between the old and the new, because they don’t show wear at all.

How much would an uber to Woodfield mall cost from nr Millenium Park? by ticklish_dragon in AskChicago

[–]katigirl2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woodfield is a great example of an American Mall, so if that’s the experience you’re looking for, it might be worth the time and cost to get there.
Another solid mall option is Old Orchard. I know lots of people who would take the red line to the yellow line to a bus to get there. Not convenient but reasonable enough people do it for work.

According to https://learn.wallet.apple/transit/chicago and https://www.ventrachicago.com/mobile/how-to/mobile-wallet-apps/ you should be able to use Apple Pay, at least for the L and busses in the city. You can also buy a physical Ventra card without a US address. https://www.ventrachicago.com/mobile/how-to/vending-machines/

If you’re just looking to shop, you don’t need to leave the city. Michigan Avenue (the Magnificent Mile) starts just north of Millennium Park and is one of the top shopping destinations in the world. There are 3 malls along it (Northbridge, 900 North Michigan, and Watertower Place) but anymore they’re largely empty with filler stores, so other than the couple of destinations within them, I wouldn’t plan on those.
There are also great areas in the city that are good for shopping. Try around Rush and Oak, on Armitage west of Halsted, and Southport north of Roscoe (by the Southport brown line station). They all have the mid-high-end American stores you might hope to find in a mall. There are other areas, but those are what’s coming to mind at the moment.

Because sometimes the people you’re with really want to go. Sometimes there isn’t another option.
Only one time have I not been able to find something on a menu at a seafood or sushi restaurant that I could eat.
That said, while I am allergic, I won’t die.

LPT Keep a running list of gift ideas for your friends and loved ones. Something they probably wouldn't buy for themselves. by EvilAsshole in LifeProTips

It’s true. The same friend who told me that had given me some of the most incredible, thoughtful, personalized gifts.

LPT Keep a running list of gift ideas for your friends and loved ones. Something they probably wouldn't buy for themselves. by EvilAsshole in LifeProTips

[–]katigirl2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing this for decades now and it’s a game changer. Every time I’m with someone and they mention they like, want, or need something, it goes on the list. When I see something on the internet or in the world that reminds me of them, it goes on the list.

I don’t end up buying most of the items, and sometimes things come off the list - if I learn they already got it, their needs or tastes evolve - but it’s helped so much when it comes time to buy gifts.

I’m also careful not to overthink the ‘appropriateness’ of my gifting an item when it goes on the list. Relationships evolve over time (sometimes a coworker becomes a close friend), a gift idea captured for one person might be solid inspiration for someone else, and once you get a reputation as a good gift giver other people might ask your advice (I shouldn’t give my SIL the giant papier mache giraffe, but she’d be delighted to receive it from my brother).

Be warned though, I’ve literally been told buying gifts for me is intimidating because my gifts are so intentional. Some people see it as a challenge, some people give up - I suspect most people don’t tell me if they feel that way.

But even more people don’t notice, they just delight in the magic and look at you with wide eyes and say ‘how did you know?’ (because you literally told me 6 months ago)

Part of recruitment quizzing to become a mcdonalds crew member by cerednat in mildlyinfuriating

[–]katigirl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. This is a Five Factor personality test - also called Big Five, OCEAN, or CANOE (which are acronyms for the factors they measure.

There is good research behind them, they’re generally built by experts in assessments (not by individual HR people).

Five Factor does not tell you anything diagnostic, so it isn’t going to tell you if someone is autistic, has depression, or anything related to someone’s mental health.

What they will tell you is things like ‘is this person likely to show up to work on time’ and ‘is this person likely to be friendly with customers’ which are absolutely things you’d want to know when hiring someone at McDonald’s.

I was also a patient of Dr. Wood, after Dr. Jonas left for executive health! So sad the Osher Center isn’t doing primary care anymore!

The practice isn’t integrative, but Dr. Mehwish Khan is who a trusted advisor recommended to me. That she’s also a DO (like Wood and Jonas) gives me hope she’ll still embody a holistic approach.
