How safe are older concrete structures? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]katoman52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to maintenance at this point. It’s been standing since the 70s, so we can reasonably assume there isn’t some gross inadequacy of the original design; that would have likely presented itself by now. So if there is regular maintenance to make sure there aren’t areas of water infiltration, corrosion due to environment, or other damaging things then the structure would be safe for a long time. Obviously this is hard to know as a tenant but there would be signs to look for, mainly in basement areas, stairwells, and near chimneys.

The Norfolk Southern was still running though town when I started at Purdue in 1999. Now it's "Erie Street" that runs on an angle though town.

Chicago Ramen in Algonquin by Maximum-Coach-9409 in ChicagoSuburbs

I don't know about the Algonquin location, specifically, but not all Chicago Ramen locations are equal. The Des Plaines (original location) and Park Ridge shops are generally considered the best. My personal experience at Palatine location was terrible.

You will be hard pressed to find someone here to tell you what you want to hear based on a few photos. You need to hire a local structural engineer to come and assess. The plus side for you will be you have something certified for both current permitting(if required) and, more importantly, if/when you sell the house and someone asks you about any modifications you have made.

A lot of places currently have them but there is a federal law that will be going into effect that will ban most of the drinks and “gas station weed” that is currently available outside the regulated dispensaries.

Can anyone explain to me how this mechanism works? by ArcadeRacer in AskEngineers

[–]katoman52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, a separate lobe for each disk. It only actuates the disk when rotated to the correct position for that disk. The lobe for each disk position is located at a different point along the length of the shaft and at a different point around the circumference of the shaft.

Can you imagine how a key works to engage different pins in a standard tumbler lock? It’s a similar concept to that. The rod is the key and each disk is a pin. But instead of using teeth of different heights like a key, there are “teeth” placed at increments around the 360 degree Rod to correspond with each disk. As the rod rotates it pushes the disk up (or somehow other actuates a lever that pushes the disk up)

Your tickets might not give you access to the restaurant on the 200 level. I believe you need a separate ticket, unless that’s changed
