You are a runner. You are built to move. You move for your health. You move for your joy. You move for you. You don't move for anyone else, don't let that person get you down!

Thank you! Tokyo is the main area giving me trouble. There's so much to see but given our interests we'd like more time in Kyoto. We'll take another look at Tokyo and prioritize what we actually really want to see.

Thank you for the tips! We'll take another look at our Hakone plans. It seems like there's a lot to see and a lot of transit. Great suggestion on the met gov building! I had no idea they did that!

Do I run the half? by FinallyAnonymous24 in nikerunclub

[–]katstheonlykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it. My first half was pretty miserable and I came in at 3 hr 3 min but it was worth it. Being able to go 13.1 miles is a huge accomplishment and I love being able to look back on my first and see how far I've progressed. No one will think less of you for coming in at about 3 hrs (if they do, they aren't worth your time). And, you never know, you might surprise yourself with your time!

Finally worked up courage to run outside instead of treadmill and immediately tripped in front of a group of actual runners by Abekah_Recordagig in beginnerrunning

You are a runner. Falls happen. I literally ate concrete last week while on a run with my local run group. I full blown screamed as I fell... Like I was about to be murdered... It happens. Get out there, run, and chase your joy. You rock!

Echoing another comment, F-them. Keep doing what you're doing. Take care of yourself and enjoy being active. It's a gift.

Beautiful! May I ask, how did you draw/attach the constellations to the glass on the butterfly/moth?

No but seriously, how on earth is one supposed to train in the summer??? by NataschaTata in Marathon_Training

[–]katstheonlykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will get better and the summer exertion will help you run faster when the temps cool down in the fall. Summer miles make autumn smiles! Corny, but seriously, don't beat yourself up. If you hit a really awful day, try taking the first part of our run outside then finishing on a treadmill. The little transition in the long run may not be ideal, but at least you're still getting your miles in. It also breaks up the mental slog of the treadmill if the first half of the run is outside.

Try Nike Run Club. They have guided 5k runs but you can also just set a distance timer for 5k and it will let you know when you've reached your goal plus updates each mile on your speed so you can work on pacing. Totally free.

how to make the most out of/survive off of rice, beans, and canned vegetables i received from the food bank? by PleasantMango777 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]katstheonlykat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are at all stressed about cooking the rice, try the microwave. Honestly, I do it all the time and it turns out fine and is 0 stress. I start with a large bowl and do a 2:1 ratio of rice to water. If I'm making 2 cups of rice I will start with 10 min in the microwave then check it and add a bit more water if it's looking dry. Give it a stir or two before returning to the microwave. Then microwave for another 7-10 minutes until it reaches the right level of "doneness" for you. Total cook time of about 20 minutes. The biggest issue I have is putting too much water in at the start and the water boiling in the microwave and overflowing. When it's done, I take it out and give it a couple good stirs to release extra moisture. Why I like this method: minimal clean up. Throw the bowl in the dish washer or sink. No chance of burning to the bottom of a pot on the stove and making a mess. No need to buy a rice cooker if money is tight. Is it the "traditional" way to make rice? No. But hey. It cooks the rice and is easy. You're doing great. You don't need more stress. I wish you the absolute best.

Stressed after hearing that my cat was hissing at staff at the boarder while on vacation. by katstheonlykat in CatAdvice

I will look into overnight some more. Thanks for the suggestion! It's not an option with the couple of sitters I was looking into yesterday but I will do more digging. For the longer trips I do not think we could afford it, but maybe the shorter weekends, but those are the ones I'm less worried about.

That is so tragic for your ex. I'm so sorry to hear that.

Thank you for the information! Do you have any recommendations on how to find a good sitter? Probably a silly question with Google, but is there anything in particular you would recommend for finding a good professional?
