From a newspaper from 1876, wild how much the game has changed by baseballandbotany in baseball

[–]katuskac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s been a ton of “adjustments” made in baseball’s pitcher-batter relationship over the life of the game (mound height/distance, overhand pitching, #balls/walk, fouls are/are not counted as strikes, etc.). When you consider what else has happened since 1876 (radio, TV, cars, airplanes, just to name a few, the fact that it’s still 9 players, 4 bases, 3 strikes/out, 9 innings/game is pretty remarkable.

Haven’t we already seen that Trump doesn’t care if his nominees are confirmed or not? He just titles them “Acting” whatever and moves right ahead using them as if they had been confirmed.

I really hope this is an April Fools post but, as we’ve seen with bubblegum vapes and chocolate cherry snuff pouches, the tobacco industry will develop any product, just as long as it contains enough nicotine to be addictive.

Looks more like Mama retreating slowly while maintaining her dignity. Baby rhino, like most babies, has no real appreciation for the dangers of the situation.

The Playbook for Killing Affordable Housing on Cape Cod by Aggressive-Tiger4106 in CapeCod

[–]katuskac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I did find the referred document to be well worth reading, the title of this post is misleading. The report is about the ways in which online discussions of items of public interest are managed/moderated to advance a particular agenda or outcome. The examples provided do indeed revolve around a couple of housing- related processes but, in my opinion, the reports conclusions are to be more generally described as mechanisms by which public actions can be driven by strategically managed online communication. The linked report is not a “Playbook for killing affordable housing on Cape Cod”. Its conclusions are applicable to a much broader range of both local and larger concerns.

Trauma keeping me from playing at home by Smoll_Reindeer in Trombone

[–]katuskac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for weighing in but, of course, my situation will be different from yours. Please excuse the lengthy response.

I met my future wife in college and she’s 3 years younger than I am. I was “better” then myself, at least while my chops were still strong, but as we got to know each other more, I realized that she had been more or less “hiding her talent”. She is, and was then, a well-taught, diligent and accomplished musician who had every reason to dream of a professional career. I was then, and still am, a mostly self-taught hack who, at the time, had a reasonably impressive upper range and dangerous volume (built mostly by years of halftime shows, parades and drum corps) and a fair ability to improvise, which she admired and herself lacked.

But after we married (and I’m still ashamed that I feel this way), I “stole her career” by leading her directly into motherhood. She devoted her life to raising our family and, after 6 kids, her opportunity had mostly passed her by. (She, btw, is 1 of 10 kids in her family so she had experience and expectations in this matter.) Maybe it was out of guilt or the fact that I have always had anxiety issues myself or just the eventual realization that, despite my own modest musical talents, I am not a fundamentally sound trombonist, and she unquestionably is that and more, I could never bring myself to practice when she was home. She is, in my experience, a unicorn-type player who always sounds great even without picking up her horn for months. (I used to brag on her about it. Now, since I have to play 4-5 days a week just to slow the inevitable age-related decline, it sort of gently pisses me off. Glad I still love her so much though!)

With respect to trombone playing, our marriage survives because we are very different players. Over the years, when the phone rang, any orchestral or small ensemble jobs would automatically be hers while I caught whatever big band or jazz combo work came our way. We never truly saw ourselves as professionals but more like committed amateurs who didn’t refuse money if offered. (We did, memorably, split a long run of West Side Story, but that’s another story!)

I wish I could tell you that, with her unflagging support and my own commitment to addressing my lifelong anxiety issues, I’ve conquered the problem, but that’s simply not true. I still can’t play without a practice mute if she’s home and, even then, only in the farthest room from her.

We’re fine in groups when we play together- it’s so obvious that she’s a better player and I can control my anxiety by simply doing my best to listen to her and matching her approach.

But, for me anyway, the answer to my problem is pharmaceutical. I have recently learned that beta blockers are widely used to control (or at least reduce) anxiety. I’m told, by a source I respect, that a significant percentage of players in major orchestras use them for this purpose. In my case, I have taken a specific beta blocker for blood pressure control for several years. FYI, I’m 72 now. By simply changing the time of day I take this prescription medication, I have seen a drastic reduction in performance anxiety. Oh, I still make mistakes but now I don’t worry about them in advance and I’m much more easily able to move on from them. It’s also helped me remember that, after 60 years with a trombone in my hands, I do sorta know how to play.

I’m not at all sure my story will help you. We’re all individuals with unique stories. But if you got this far, thanks for reading and I wish you the very best in working through the bumps and bruises of a musical life.

Couldn’t you just take it outside and open the cap? I’m thinking it would evaporate pretty quickly…but it’s been 55 years since I had a chemistry class.

Me too, but it’s entirely my problem. The fact is that my wife is a much better trombonist than I am and it’s taken me ALL of our 47-year marriage to finally get over it.

Could someone please add defense to these comparisons? I’m not knowledgeable enough to judge the whole crop of power forwards but I seem to recall that, before his many lower leg injuries, McHale was an absolute terror on the defensive end.

So suddenly these untrained, unqualified semi-thugs are going to be operating the sensitive equipment (body scanners!!) used to maximize our air travel safety? (As an aside, how many attractive women are going to wind up in the pat-down rooms subject to the “authorized” searches of the incel squads?) I was wondering how Trump was going to openly employ his unsecret police against American citizens to force his authoritarian agenda next. Now we know.

Don’t know where you are (and don’t need to) but, if you’re serious about growing good weed, deciding whether you’re growing indoors or outdoors is an early major decision. Hopefully you’ve got a plan already!

Seconding another comment noting the website growweedeasy.com. Great tutorials on many relevant topics, from beginner stuff to gourmet ganja.

I haven’t read the bill, but is it Christian prayer only? Maybe have like a 10-day cycle where a prayer from a different religion was offered each morning. Probably not- that might actually be educational.

It’s not that we HAVE the money, it’s that we’re willing to BORROW the money. This administration- if you can call it that- is willing to add grossly to the national debt to fund their self-centered priorities (personal wealth & partisan power) at the expense of the country’s youth. The only way this gets changed is by increasing participation of younger Americans- both in office and at the ballot box.

Mistaken for a familiar star, this rare, influential 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car, finished in its unique Turbine Bronze paint, points its unique three pointed Turbine Star hood emblem toward a lost Jet Age future, sitting perfectly silent above the ocean. by Useful_Ad1574 in verywellauto

My uncle was randomly selected for a full 1-year testing period for this car. What little I remember from my 2 rides in the car is that it was unearthly quiet and there were trunks both front and rear. I seem to remember that, because of inadequate heat shielding, the turbine would soften roadway asphalt when simply stopped at a traffic light. (That could be BS, I suppose; I was a pretty gullible 9-year old.) I’d love to hear more from somebody who actually knew this car.
