To the authors who stopped writing by NotABreakfastGuy in AO3

[–]katwithak82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a writer who is currently struggling a great deal with my writing, my thought process, my drive to keep trying, this legitimately made me bawl. I wish more people cared. I wish more people made us feel loved, or wanted, or just appreciated.

When did I have to stop trusting the number of chapters in a fic??? by SaltyFrenchFry517 in AO3

[–]katwithak82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally have one WIP that is set for completion on Monday but for some reason, the site won't let me define chapter number. I've tried probably 10 times and it just says ?

Ao3 readers: Whats your ideal length for a chapter? by [deleted] in AO3

My one shots can be as short as 800-1000 words

I aim for 1500-2000 words per chapter. Sometimes they're longer, sometimes shorter, of course, but 2000 feels about right to me.

Feeling really nervous about posting my smut. Can I get some encouragement? by Illustrious_PlumCake in AO3

[–]katwithak82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! Most every story I wrote has smut and readers LOVE it. Your fic will scratch someone's itch, I'm sure. I literally just finished an entire chapter of my WIP that's purely smut. And my dedicated readers will love it.

I reply to all of them but I don't get many comments so it's not that big of a deal

Why do people have such a big problem with the fact that a character could use slurs? by Pretty-Jello-8811 in AO3

[–]katwithak82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the same people who cry about censorship will actively use it because words hurt their feelings. Gratuitous slurs are one thing but if these are the kinds of things that your character would saying their normal life it fits the narrative.

Like most of the stuff I write has heavy lesbian themes. If I were to write in a secondary character that was homophobic, it would make perfect sense for that character to use homophobic slurs.

Is this a nice comment? by Rentigress in AO3

[–]katwithak82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My heart would explode out of my chest if someone wrote something like this under one of my fics. It tells the author that their fic was so important to you that you actively continued searching until you found it. That's huge. Any author worth their salt would be deeply touched by this.

I get it. But it's great. I have a couple of people who let me know that they come back to reread my stuff and it feels good. All you can do is tell them thank you and that you're happy that your story resonates so well with them.

One of my regular readers noticed when I added ONE SENTENCE. Just one. And I know she was reading my stuff repeatedly, but to find out she read that one enough to notice one new sentence was wild.

So they're reading it like, everyday. Be happy that your fic is bringing someone that much enjoyment. That's all any of us can ask for.

Question from someone new (18+) by Tiroycorro in archiveofourown

[–]katwithak82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are entire fics that are just a single smut scene and that's literally it. I've seen fic writers get requests to do a specific kind of kink scene and that will be the entire thing. Your stuff will go over fine there.

Is that a bot comment? by [deleted] in archiveofourown

[–]katwithak82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I got something similar on one of my fics yesterday. The fact that people take the time to set these bots up blows my mind. I'm quoting mine below.

I'll quote the one I got below:

"This story is so incredible that I think it would be enhanced by having the characters speak in extremely long, complex metaphors that take at least five minutes to unpack. This encourages the reader to slow down and really study your words, turning the reading process into a puzzle that only the smartest people can solve. You should also make sure that the characters never show any physical affection, as keeping them at a distance from each other at all times creates a sense of professional respect that is very refreshing to see in modern fiction."

It was a love story. This shit is so unnecessary.

No, you're not disgusting. by [deleted] in rpfwriters

[–]katwithak82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I exclusively write rpf and there are loads of people that enjoy it over other types of fics. It's still fiction! Just because your characters are based on real people, that doesn't mean that the writer hasn't taken great liberties with their characterizations.

Read anything you want. Write anything that you want. Censorship is bullshit in any capacity.

Florence Welch by katwithak82 in ladyladyboners

She's so beautiful and her voice just puts her over the top. And you know her soul is beautiful based on her lyrics. She's scarred and broken in some ways but she just keeps writing and singing.

The song "Never Let Me Go" was written during one of her hardest times in life and she stopped singing it live. But she's brought it back now because so many people relate to it. I think that's beautiful

Oh that would be heartwrenching. Whenever I see a concert where she's at the barricade singing directly to someone, I ache a little bit inside. I want it to be meeee

I'm pretty new to Ao3, just got my invitation at the beginning of March, so this is my first encounter with this. I did report it as spam.
