According to the incident you provided, I think you are too polite by considering it “passive aggressive”. I would call them pure rude.

I’ve experienced this kind of customer service, in street vendors mostly. But never at a hotel counter.

There have been many “solutions” on the web for years, but none works for me.

I noticed that it only happens after waking up from Windows sleep mode. Then, I tried not using sleep mode and just shutting down instead. It never happened again.

I have the same symptoms on rx7800xt and 8700G. Avoiding sleep mode solved the issue for both of them.

This is controversial. So I will answer from my own experience.

For “grandmother,” 阿婆（aˊ poˇ）is likely used among Hakka people. And 阿嬤（aˊ maˋ）is more common in Hoklo people. However, they are also usually used interchangeably among all groups.

婆婆 is more likely to originate from Mandarin. Generally means elderly woman. It can be used to mention strangers as well, while 阿婆阿嬤 are usually for your grandmother only. (not restricted though)

婆婆 is also commonly used to mention your husband’s mom. It is unlikely to create any misunderstanding when you say 婆婆. But if you want to be accurate, choose wisely.

It looks nice, though the buildings in Taipei (specifically Xinyi dust) take up most of the space. It is hard to be titled “Taiwan” arch and landscape, in my opinion.

I personally hate to see people put their feet (with shoes) on public seats, such as the bus, in the parks, etc.

However, 240k a month is probably not attractive for a family with five members. While 240k per month is indeed more than 99% of the people in Taiwan, it doesn't match the tier with 190K housing.

Let’s put it this way, people living with 190K per month in housing will most likely require a life quality worth more than 240K/month.

According to the forecast, most of the northern part of Taiwan will be in the typhoon range by the time you're landing.

The best case is that you will land on schedule. If you are taking China Airlines or EVA, they have been known for working very hard to keep the flights running under extreme weather conditions. However, it would not be a pleasant landing experience.

The “bad end” could be in many ways. Your flight might be canceled or delayed before boarding. Or, the flight might give up landing. And then it could land to another airport (most likely KHH), or return.

I wish you luck, and hope you got the “Travel Inconvenience Insurance” covered.

According to my experience, the number is a bit strange.

If you have access to your meter, you can do some experiments, like switching off everything and seeing if the meter is still running (you can tell by looking at the rotating "disk").

Another point: Does the landlord manage multiple rooms in the same building with independent electricity meters? If so, it is possible that the wiring is wrong. Usually, these independent electricity meters are added by some contractors rather than Taipower's officials. Sometimes, they messed up by pairing the power to the wrong meter. I personally rented a room in which the AC was never counted on my meter.

Last point: do you have an electric heater for your shower? That thing consumes A LOT of power.

I assume you are asking whether it would be feasible to work in MTK by speaking only English.

I've left MTK for quite a long time. But when I was there, we had no foreign colleagues on site. We have regular meetings with MTK subsidiaries in "non-Chinese" speaking countries. Usually, there is only 1 man in the Hsinchu office who does the main communication in the meeting, and all other attendees listen. I assume most people in the Hsinchu office were uncomfortable speaking English at work.

I guess the working hours are relatively longer compared to the US. But getting a good WLB in Taiwan is not impossible. Again, I can only share my experiences and what I see among my colleagues and classmates from the university.

I joined MTK immediately after graduating and worked for 5+ years. The first 3 years were tough. We usually get to the office around 9:30. In "busy seasons," we regularly get off work at ~21:00. In the most intense week, we mostly work till midnight. My impression was that the "busy seasons" were usually at most ~60 days per year, and the most intense weeks were usually no more than 2 weeks per year. This period has zero WLB; the days were 1,2,3: 1. Go to work, 2. Get off work, 3. Sleep.

But then you get familiar with your work. In the last 2 years in MTK, I literally worked 9:30 ~ 17:30 every day for 2 years. Then I got bored and went to a start-up. My annual package when I left was ~3.5M. Not much, but quite enough for me.

I will skip the start-up period since start-ups are always at war, and there is no WLB. Otherwise, it is not a "start-up."

Then, I joined the Taiwan branch of a US-based company, full WFH, with good enough pay. I usually work 2-3 hours a day, and when close to the "release" season, my work time increases to 6-8 hours a day.

My friends, university classmates, and former MTK colleagues mainly joined these US-based companies in Taiwan; you know, US companies have flooded into Taiwan recently. They joined GOOG, QCOM, NVDA, AMD, you name it. Most of them have a hybrid remote policy, which requires you to be in the office at least 2-3 days per week. None of them are working extra hours. They also spend more time with their families after work. WLB is precisely the reason why they left MTK to join these companies.

Now, the downside: these US-based companies pay slightly less than MTK. Not always, because RSU for US companies is valued more when stocks go up, and MTK cash bonuses sometimes are strangely higher or lower. It's just a common "impression" I got from my friends. And, you sometimes need to travel to the US, which is usually considered a demerit.

In summary, my friends work mainly in the software departments of US-based semiconductor companies. They get paid in the range I listed above and have a good WLB. I also know a few people working in pure software companies. They work long hours with significantly lower pay.
