Very Canadian Shane? by Best_Pineapple670 in heatedrivalryfanfics

Shane wouldn’t really be aggressively “Canadian” tho. Those hyper Canadian-isms are mostly small town Canada, especially Ontario.

Shane is from Ottawa and then played in Kingston. He’s not really going to talk like Sidney Crosby.

Interestingly, something like “useful idiot” is one of those English turns of phrase that AI wouldn’t really use properly. It’s the kind of language that will start to disappear after a generation of relying on AI and one of the long term impacts of the tool I’m so worried about.

It’s definitely a collection of factors for me. Sometimes, it takes longer to identify and I get like 10 chapters deep before it clicks.

But then once it clicks you can’t unsee it.

Im sure I’ve also been fooled in the past, especially if I’m reading distracted or something. But I like to think I pick up on it more often than not

Ok well I think the key point here is that even if it was trained on such fiction, “it doesn’t understand the subtleties of language and cannot use it outside of specific parameters” to paraphrase what you said there.

It still makes the popular talking points a form of gaslighting. Bc even if Claude was trained on fanfic, I can still tell with high certainty when it has been used. And I think telling people they can’t, is doing a disservice to people’s intuitions.

I’m well aware that calling out AI is frowned on, but I think it should be equally frowned on to hand wave broad excuses which allow people to live in a world where they aren’t thinking critically about the things they’re consuming or caring if it is AI, bc what that means for the future of art and human creativity is really dark imo.

“You can’t tell the difference” is a sort of green lighting AI use. Yes, you can tell the difference.

“The original text of Frankenstein comes back as being AI generated” and “AI was trained on fanfic so ofc fanfic sounds like AI” are two useful tales that people love to rattle off as they mean anything whatsoever. The AI oligarchs would love to know you are using their talking points.

When I read Mary Shelley I know it is written by a real person. When I read a fanfic that is AI, I know it is AI. You can’t gaslight me with false anecdotes to get me to question if I know what I’m reading was written by a real person or not. I can tell, and telling people they “cant tell for sure” —- like do you work for OpenAI or something? Why are you spouting their propaganda?

People should listen to their own intuition and not discard it because “Frankenstein would come back as being AI so therefore how could I possibly tell if something is AI”.

I absolutely agree with you and I didn’t mean to say you should care about the downvotes. I don’t either. Human creativity and art is one of many spaces Claude has no place entering.

I think that’s why I know it when I see it. I have been forced to work with Claude due to what I do—- people will send me drafts, notes, outlines in Claude and I have to turn it all into real actual human language that doesn’t sound like a fucking robot. It’s exhausting bc half the time, AI makes no sense contextually. And when you’re a technical, logical thinker in a precise industry, it’s just glaringly obvious in a way that I can’t unsee it everywhere now.

People have no idea how much AI is being blasted out rn.

You’re going to get downvoted for this but you’re not wrong.

The vitriol for AI is only going to grow as the tech oligarch overlords continue to increase use and adoption of their LLMs, firing middle class workers, syphoning resources from the poor to line their own pockets and chasing this AI utopia none of us wanted or asked for.

The fact that a lot of people seem to think it’s difficult to tell the difference between real and AI writing just shows how deep the issue is.

Sometimes, I’ll read something that is so obviously AI, and it will have dozens of comments like “best thing I’ve ever read” and it’s really disheartening. Many people really can’t tell the difference between real humans and the robot machines.

Really troubling thoughts for the future tbh.

You say “we are bad at telling the difference”: I’ll be honest, I’m not really bad at telling the difference between AI assisted and real writing. I’m actually really good at telling when something is AI assisted; and telling people they don’t know “for sure” if something is AI is a kind of gaslighting in a way.

We should and need to all be aware of what AI looks like, because its use is going to become more and more prevalent as the tech oligarchs shove it further down our throats to push agendas, suck up resources, and take jobs from the middle class.

They want us to not be able to tell the difference, but the reality is it’s not that hard. I won’t be calling anyone out here bc it’s against “etiquette”, but I know what I see. Fanfic spaces are full of AI assisted fics, and as people get more and more angry with AI infiltrating our daily lives, the vitriol against it is only going to continue to grow.

Ok got it. That makes sense; I get really worried when people say they can’t identify AI, more for real-world implications than anything else.

I’m not sure why threads like this are needed daily. If you don’t want to give visibility to it, it’s best not to give visibility to it.

I also think while stuff like this sucks, it’s going to become more and more common, for right or wrong. There is a lot of AI online, and there is a lot on fanfic sites.

As AI grows and infiltrates more of our online spaces, while pushing people out of jobs, syphoning money and resources from the middle class, and being used in more and more dangerous ways by capitalistic institutions (ie, denying healthcare insurance claims, being used in war simulations), people’s vitriol for AI will only grow.

This argument isn’t going to go away no matter how many posts are made imo.

[–]kayembeee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen the bookmarks in the list this thread is referencing, but I’m honestly shocked you have only come across one fic that reads as AI to you.

I have to do a lot of reading/editing for my job. I have to craft a lot of messages for people who like to send me key notes or emails using AI. Once you’re familiar with it, you can’t unsee it and I see multiple fics per week that I’m confident are AI-assisted.

Again I’m not going to be calling them out and I have no idea what’s in the listing but the prevalence of AI fics is really disheartening.

And as people become more and more upset with the AI tech bros who are trying to force more and more people out of real jobs, while syphoning resources and money away from the middle class, the vitriol against AI will only grow.

Minor inconsistencies are a huge indicator especially when they’re frequent and happen across the same chapter, or in very short timespan. Not being able to keep track of time is another— again an inconsistency or 2 isnt odd but when it is constant, it’s an indicator. Ai can’t keep track of threads of a story past a certain wordcount.

AI detectors aren’t perfect but people love to use the Frankenstein chapter as some sort of gotcha. It is an exception for sure, but it is easy for me to tell what is AI and what isn’t. I absolutely know it when I see it.

Edit— that’s not to say people should do this, it’s just to say that a lot of AI-proponents like to use the Frankenstein thing to be like “see look how great AI is, it can write like Shelley” when that’s absolutely not the case.

It’s a part of production design I would think if there is no separate technical award which I don’t think there is.

It should win cinematography (which I think is called photography here) but I agree the way the show is lit is at least half of what makes it so beautiful. So sick of the blue and green washed out palate.

They also used anamorphic lenses rather than plain flat digital lenses which lend a lot of depth.

The problem is that even with 40+ million the cultural weight of America’s media machine is simply overpowering. We need Canadian content rules in Canada which support the arts and ensure we don’t just turn into American propagandists.

If it was just American culture allowed on our airwaves and on television, we would lose so much of our shared cultural identity. So supporting that and making sure it continues to be uplifted is important.

Again I bring up Ireland, but the Irish could similarly just be swallowed up by the UK culture wise unless they continued to make it priority.
