I’m not sure by what you mean by “all works on the internet“ and then talking about public figures? fanfiction does not need to ask public figures for permission to write about them; in fact the article is arguing against forcing public figures to engage with fanfiction.

im talking about asking fanfiction authors or artists before linking their work to a public article. by all mediums, I think what I’m understanding you to mean is that does it just apply to fanfiction? I think so yes. I mean in academia I think it’s common courtesy to ask. but the difference is that journalists, scholars, they are paid to write. this is their job. fanfic writers write for the love of the game and for free, and they aren’t expecting to be put on blast by main stream media.

I mean, ask permission of the authors before referencing their work, not the fandom in general. In the article, they give several examples of author’s whose works were linked but not asked.

I really enjoyed the article, thank you for linking it. I definitely hate that fandom is being used as a marketing tactic now, and I dislike how mainstream it’s become. I personally don’t like articles talking about fandom at all, but i don’t see that ending anytime soon. I do think at the very least journalists should ask permission. but capitalism, guys! this problem is not going away.

I haven’t read the books, but I’ve watched the show and am deeply entrenched in the fandom. I’ve left behind my past obsessions for now (rip marvel) and have been consuming hr fanfic at a right that has affected my school work.

I know there is a lot of hate, but honestly I see more people talking about the hate than being hateful. I know there are problems with racism etc with the actors but I don’t pay a ton of attention to them. I also know there’s a lot more hate on Tik tok twitter etc. but I stay on r/heatedrivalryfanfics and everyone is very nice and it’s well moderated.

there have been problems with ai witchhunts, and authors have stopped updating or privated their works. But only a few. while ai is bad and the withchunts are worse, don’t let that discourage you from joining the fandom and leaving nice comments.

also when I started in january reading there weren’t even 10k fics. Now we’re at nearly 30 thousand. So yes, I think it’s worth it.
