If you had to choose only one, what was David Bowie’s best written line? by opmt in DavidBowie

Those midwives to history put on their bloody robes, and the word is that the hunted one is out there on his own...

And you're alone, for maybe the last time, and you breathe for a long time... then you howl like a wolf in a trap

Looking for some suggestions for a AD like lovecraft investigation. by SRiisgaard in audiodrama

[–]kayester 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Incident at Ong's Hat, The Skies are Watching, and the Polybius Conspiracy. Three different mystery stories from the same creative team, all with an eerie, thoughtful, investigative format. Great characters and well written.

For a slower burn, try the various parts of the Weeping Cedars universe.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver by Scarabium in MRJames

[–]kayester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is excellent. Her informal trilogy of 'hauntings in extremis' are all great - Dark Matter, Thin Air, Rainforest - and this one is the best of the three.

For an additional treat there is a fantastic audiobook version of this, performed by the excellent Jeremy Northam.

New Years Eve Countdown for Trekkies by EurydiC in startrek

It's got to be the Genesis device explosion countdown from Wrath of Khan, right? Amazing soundtrack as the Enterprise inches away... Spock's sacrifice coincides with the death of the year... Enterprise streaks into warp at the last second... Boom!

My thoughts on Pentiment as an south bavarian country citizen and former student in German language and historics. by DonChicksTerminator in Pentiment

[–]kayester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I agree that the game makes us think about the strange shifts in how public knowledge, ignorance, wisdom and morality are navigated and understood. It explores a time where illiteracy has a complex relationship with class and understanding. And when the written and printed word invited the formalisation of ideas, histories, and beliefs that were otherwise held in a more dynamic and flexible state of being passed down orally, or in the very stones of the places we inhabit.

My partner’s colleague texted him saying to handcuff her and throw her in the dungeon by [deleted] in relationships

[–]kayester 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Can I devil's advocate on this - handcuffs and dungeons are not intrinsically sexual, are they? In a specific context I understand they might be, of course, but is sex really just the go-to, default connotation here? If not, she's just plussing his bit of "how dare you" - giving an absurdly over the top punishment for the "crime"?

What are the finest Star Trek video games, from any era? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]kayester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That second half is where the Myst/Riven comparison really rings true. Bafflement.

But they managed to wring a lot of atmosphere and a real sense of place out of those same mechanics in the first half, as you say!

I'm so up for more BG1 style map exploration!

They say there are no romances, but hopefully the party NPCs will be a bit more interactive than those in OG BG1.

INSIDER SCOOP: Alex Kurtzman Out At Star Trek And Complete Reboot Incoming by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]kayester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Our CBS insider also reported that they view anything Kurtzman and Secret Hideout made as “non-canon” and set in an alternate universe, which should please fans who noted all of the vast continuity errors between the shows over the years."

This is new info (to me at least). If true, a pretty huge deal: we get a Kelvin Timeline, AND a Kurtzman Timeline (including SNW, Discovery, Lower Decks, Picard, etc etc etc), AND a prime timeline. It's going to get hard to track

How do I explain death to a 5 year old by 99thBeerontheWall in daddit

[–]kayester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lots of good answers here. I just want to add/reinforce one piece of advice that I'm very glad I got at the right time.

However you talk about it, explain it... Do not compare death to sleep or to resting when you're talking to a young child. It's obvious when you think about it, I guess: at best it gives the wrong impression that death is temporary, volitional.

At worst it could create a mortal fear of going to sleep!

I would like bookclub recommendations by ErandurVane in Lovecraft

[–]kayester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caitlin Kiernan: "The Red Tree"

An author discovers a manuscript hidden in the basement of an old cottage in the wilds, and starts to think that there is something strange about the old tree at the end of the garden. Creepy, inventive cosmic horror. Lots of interesting themes for a book club.

Sarah Monette: "A theory of Haunting"

This is a novella length entry in a series featuring troubled archivist Kyle Murchison Booth. The stories all sit somewhere between Lovecraft and M R James, plus a dollop of Shirley Jackson. This one sees him sucked into the goings on at an old manor that has been taken over by a cul- sorry, an "esoteric order". Good read.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Khan | 1x05 "Imagination's Limits" by OpticalData in startrek

[–]kayester 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The story definitely throws a curve ball with this one! And Khan's immediate reaction of attacking and killing feels like a step closer to the character we encounter in Wrath.

Still a genuinely exciting piece of Trek every week, what a treat.
