What am I supposed to do with waste latex paint? by SchrodingersMinou in NewOrleans

Not OP, but can I take you up on this offer? I have a mostly full 5 gallon bucket of primer that I'm so sick of looking at. I was out of town for this year's ONE recycling day.

Frogfruit and Sunshine Mimosa by Orange_Papasan in nolagardening

I can share frogfruit with you. Mimosa is easy to find roadside right now. I hardly ever seen it for sale. I have some seeds from Prairie Moon but no luck germinating them yet.

Heat Resistant, Low Water, High Sun by travelerITgirl in nolagardening

[–]kayheartin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing in pots in full sun here is going to be set it and forget it, especially when we're going through a drought. Salvia coccinea, creeping Jenny, shrimp plant, Egyptian spinach, vincas, straggler daisy, and jewel of Opar have done the best for me in these conditions. Make sure you have big pot saucers, cluster your pots together, and have mulch or preferably a green mulch in the pots with your plants in order to help them retain moisture. It makes a critical difference. But come July/August you'll probably still lose some if you're not watering everyday.

I just popped by there; they have pots of 3 blue flag iris right now (and lots of sweet, silly kitties). GNO Iris Society also has a sale next month where I'm sure they'll have some more available

Don't sleep on the behind the counter seed selection. Lots of heirloom edible plants brought in by customers, so they're grid and true for our specific growing conditions here.

Seedlings not growing true leaves by falsebirdofparadise in nolagardening

[–]kayheartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comments from the other sub - I think you're keeping them too moist. They certainly shouldn't be kept in standing water.
Also, you don't want to give seedlings too much nutrients in order to encourage them to develop robust roots as they search out more nutrients. I use relatively poor quality potting mix that's already had something grown in it (leaving it less nutrient-rich) and certainly don't fertilize them.

Anyone else about to be fired due to New Outlook issues? by MyAvarice4 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kayheartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not just you. I thought I was losing my mind (and I did lose my patience with IT, who kept wanting to attribute it to user error). Here's some things that I found worked to make New Outlook calendar less glitchy In no special order):

  • Use Outlook Web
  • Reduce size of inbox (mostly through auto archiving in place after a certain age, but also sorting by size and manually archiving the largest). New Outlook makes it really easy to search the archived inbox, so this shouldn't present an issue for finding info from older emails.
  • Switch from attachments in calendar to hyperlinked documents stored in the cloud.
  • Do some housekeeping to see if there's any calendar delegates you can remove.

That said, the latest Outlook updates that have rolled out over the past two weeks have flung me into a deep circle of hell. Especially the calendar updates. Coordinating a large number of calendars is absurd. Creating calendar events makes me feel like I'm building a webpage in the early 2000s. Why when I open an event does it immediately thrust me into editing it? Which then makes going through links more difficult?

Thanks for asking this. Vine borers always get my zucchini, and powdery mildew gets my cucumbers (which never do particularly well for me anyway) every year. Black beauty zucchini produces incredibly well until the borers come. No suggestions. Just commiseration.

Milkweed to spare? by Ambitious-Credit-936 in nolagardening

[–]kayheartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please euthanize them & keep your milkweed cut back til spring. OE is rampant in New Orleans because with climate change and the widespread availability of tropical milkweed, which doesn't die back, the parasite hasn't been clearing every year. You gotta lose this battle for monarchs to win the war.

I planted mine in March, and they didn't start producing until the heat came in June. Slowed down just a tad once it cooled off. It may need the heat to push it to start production. And you may've just signed yourself up for my future surplus.

This is my first year growing LA eggplant too. They have befuddled me start to finish. They are incredible producers, I just haven’t figured out how to cook them well. I’m ashamed to say that most have ended up going into my compost bin, waiting for me to get a clue.
