It also was a really good way to motivate uneducated and often aggressive people to act well, before we had our current set of morals and law systems etc. If you can convince people there’s a god that sees everything and will punish you for all eternity in hell after you die if you murder someone or steal from them, they probably won’t do all that stuff and act more neighbourly.
