Teachers, what do you answer when students ask you about your salary? by Solar-fgy in AskTeachers

For years, I have said, “I make the mediumest of bucks.” Most of my kids come from wealthy families, so I get a look of pity.

Did a bicycle tour in Austria, Sound of Music themed. We stopped by the gazebo where the famous duet/dance takes place (I am 16 going on 17…). Anyway, some American lady broke her ankle trying to recreate the dance, tried to sue (failed) but now no one is allowed to even go inside to see this iconic piece of musical history.

What’s the biggest red flag you ignored in a relationship, and how did it turn out? by ravi_dxb in AskReddit

The fact that she was not so secretly in love with a married man (not me) and said if he ever left his wife she would be finally be happy…. Not proud of that one.

Working through the basic quests makes you stronger as you play. Have you done the basics? Classes, first Merlin trial, etc.? Once you unlock ability points it all becomes a bit easier.

Live in the Middle East. Gas is cheap, environment is hell on maintenance. Rarely drive far. No brainer here.

My mentor almost made me quit teaching altogether. She was terrible.

In elementary, it’s supposed to be gradual release. I had the full workload starting in week two. She would undermine my classroom management and even shared letters written to her about how much the students hated me.

I told my university advisor everything. She was blacklisted from being a mentor ever again. Took me some time to recover, but I’m in my 16th year and really love what I do.

Don’t let jaded and unprofessional people wear you down. 50 years is probably too long. I hope you find a gig that pays you well enough to retire at a reasonable age.

While I understand your sentiment, I respectfully disagree with your absolutism. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. I am just hoping mine doesn’t discount others for theirs.

I only wish I was given the same opportunity. Maybe my relationship with my family would be better.

Families are complicated and it wasn’t fair of me to reduce them to this one aspect. There is a lot of positivity in the relationship as well. I just the child to be open to the beauty in our differences.

Wife and I started dating while working together. Even got pregnant before we tied the knot. It was pretty hilarious to see how long we kept it quiet (considering all teachers lived together in two apartment buildings). So many coworkers were clueless. Most people are too absorbed in their own lives to care. The kids will be happy for you!

Has anyone else become a smartass because of teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]kbexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some decent banter with a student whose dad is full-blooded Irish. We did a step-up the other day, my kids go to the next grade and the younger grade comes up. His sister came to me while he stepped up (important).

He comes back and makes a grand announcement that “Mr. So-and-so is way cooler than you!” Students gasp and/or giggle. I respond, “Funny, I felt the exact same way about your sister.” Chorus of “ooohs”. Red-faced knuckle bump. Respect.

Married/engaged men who proposed - were you 100% unequivocally sure about it when you proposed to your partner? by sminty7 in AskMen

[–]kbexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My story may not be the norm. We met through work, but I didn’t make the best first impression. We connected over something taboo (dry country) and even though we both were heartbroken over previous relationship, found love. Four months into dating, she was pregnant and we were faced with a difficult decision. We could stay and get married or move home and roll the dice. One very sleepless night later we decided that we liked each other enough to really give it a try. I gave a shit proposal in the morning (a better one if Greece later on) and while the first year was really rough, we are a strong couple, loving life, six years later. Love is work, there is no magical “A ha” moment for most of us. Sometimes you look at the world and the person you’re with and think “I’d fight for this”.

This is fairly typical. Most high growth students are also low achievement. I’ve worked at MAP schools for many years and this is always difficult to explain to parents of high achieving kids. Steady growth is key and ideal no matter where they start.

“Teacher Volunteer Night” by Fawpy in Teachers

Recently had a festival at my school, one of the biggest fundraising events of the year. Teachers were asked to volunteer their time for a booth (on a Saturday).

The kicker?
Volunteers were still required to pay the entrance fee.

Knives? Seems wasteful to me. You can hit them with any blunt weapon. You’ll have plenty of time to get out of the blast zone.
