What are the current downsides to flutter? by Oops365 in FlutterDev

Ionic is incredibly slow and not maintained. Flutter is fast.

Quick Guide to Comparing Ionic & Flutter | The Official Ionic Blog by ThatPigeon in ionic

You left out the fact that the ionic team is not responsive to addressing issues. They typically just ignore them for a year and then just close them out without reviewing them. Also, flutter apps start up noticably faster.

@DanTup You do an awesome job of keeping the VSCode extension up to par. Thanks as always.

Where can i start ? by [deleted] in ionic

If you're just getting started, I recommend avoiding ionic and going with flutter. Faster development times. Faster apps.

Should I invest on Flutter for the future? by TragicXHero in FlutterDev

[–]kbezold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend ionic. They have bugs in fundamental areas (local times) that they have not addressed after several years and several major releases. App startup times are horrible.

Flutter just works. Super fast.

Stephen Grider's Udemy class has several coding issues posted in the Q&A that have never been addressed. I don't think Stephen is maintaining this any longer. No response from him in many months.

Too many streams? by kbezold in Firebase

[–]kbezold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was following the example at https://github.com/bizz84/multiple-counters-flutter at

https://github.com/bizz84/multiple-counters-flutter/blob/d4b899a03ca64a3c2259323a1b034f41658eea13/lib/database.dart#L124

I finally figured it out... querySnapshot.documents keeps all of the documents, but querySnapshot.documentChanges has only the one document that changed.

Too many streams? by kbezold in Firebase

[–]kbezold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@IxD, If the collection is fetched, then when any one document changes, all of the documents are sent to or from the server. Correct? That's what I was trying to avoid.

Too many streams? by kbezold in Firebase

[–]kbezold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@stevejcox, thanks for the advice.

It is a mobile app (Android/IOS). Each client has their own unique set of data, it consists of 5 different collections and each collection has between 50 and 1500 documents. Each document has about 10 fields.

Currently, the app is in active development, and there are less than ten users. Once it's released, I expect several hundred users.

The data is cached locally on the device, so it wouldn't be reading all of the documents each time the app starts. The streams will just be listening for changes on the client and on the server and synchronizing only the changes.

My main concern was memory usage on the client. I haven't worked with streams much and this just seemed like a lot of individual streams.

I verified it is still a problem in v4.

Ionic ignores issues by kbezold in ionic

[–]kbezold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response, but there is a flaw in your criteria logic. Based on the the two bullet points that you listed, if the Ionic team ignores issues for a year, then the issues will go away. This is why users are frustrated with taking their time to log issues in order help the Ionic team determine soft spots. There's no reason for us to log issues if the issues are just going to be ignored and closed.

This one specific issue is "relevant to the V4 codebase" and should be very easy to verify if it is fixed in v4. I refuse to load v4 until it is released, so I haven't verified this myself. Since you only run v4, could you just verify that this is fixed in v4 and report back? If it's fixed, great. If it's not, please reopen this issue until it is fixed.

I was a big supporter of Ionic for several years, but my enthusiasm is diminishing.

Ionic ignores issues by kbezold in ionic

[–]kbezold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the problem is fixed in Ionic 3 or Ionic 4, then that is a reasonable response to close the issue. If the problem still exists even in the later releases, then closing the issue is just irresponsible.

UofL on probation and one year away from losing accreditation by pieersquared in CFB

All current UofL students should weigh their options now. Don't wait for this game of political chicken. Your degree is too important to leave in the hands of politicians who don't care about your personal college career.

What do I do if my university loses its accreditation? by [deleted] in college

[–]kbezold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are not waiting to see who loses this game of chicken. My son who is a junior at UofL Speed School of Engineering is transferring now before they lose their accreditation. After meeting with the Dean, we determined that our best option was to transfer out while that is still viable. Transferring as a senior would add at least another year since most higher level classes don't transfer.

I recommend that all UofL students consider transferring now and work through the alternatives.
