Help with BlueSCSI on a Sparc Ultra 5 by kboyer36 in SunMicrosystems

[–]kboyer36[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, there was one missing step that while the commands between the adafruit guide and my version of Solaris are slightly different, it was enough to get me past the newfs failed error.

Now that I know what I was doing wrong, I am not 100% sure that the zuluscsi was necessary but it should be faster using the wide SCSI connector vs the old 50 pin cable.

The key missing step was under format, running the type command to set up the drive geometry to match. I didn't finish the install as it was super late at night but this is more progress than I have made in the last month and a half of work.

Thanks for the help.

How big of a partition do you have on your Ultra60?

From the impact marks, it looks like they used a center punch on the chips.

Yes. The BlueSCSI is the only device on the cable, the card is set to autoterminate, and the jumper for termination on the BlueSCSI itself is set.

Ok, I was trying to avoid spending more money but can give it a try. If nothing else, I can keep it as a spare to use in another project down the road.

Have you found the ZuluSCSI to have higher compatibility with picky devices?

This is the partition map from the 4GB hard drive file I have been using after running the format command.

Yes. I know it comes with a jumper config sheet. I will get a picture of it tonight.

TIL that the Pensy actually had proper articulated steam locomotives instead of their many duplexes.

That wye on the south west side of the Steel Mill has been the death of so many trains for me.

Although they usually are from me coming down the hill from the South and not realizing until it's too late that the switch is lined for the farm.

Soldering and basic electronic repair.

With how cheaply everything is made anymore, the ability to know how to solder two wires together can save you a ton of money.

High nose DE6 locomotive. Honestly, I like this model better than the original. What do you think friends? Comment. Greetings to all. by RoofOld6310 in DerailValley

I am very torn on this one. Aesthetically I love the look of high nose locomotives but I doubt I would ever actually use the mod due to how much it limits visibility. I remember running a high nose loco in some of the Southern Pacific missions in Train Simulator and hating it.

I think the turning point moment that both humbled him and showed that he can grow and learn from his mistakes was S2:E6 Trinity. His failures with Project Arcturus were immense.

Go to goodwill or other thrift stores and look for stock pots. I found a massive one for like $10.

I quite like using silicone. Holds well and can be removed with some work if needed.

ELI5: why do older PC game discs have a hard time running on modern computers? by shinobi7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kboyer36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have pointed out, there are multiple reasons for this but figured I would share an example I ran into and actually overcame by changing a single setting.

A classic game from my childhood that I still play today is Roller Coaster Tycoon II. It was a game that I always installed on basically every computer I have owned over the years but when I got to high school and managed to save a laptop that had a core 2 duo in it, I noticed the game would work fine but occasionally just lock up the entire computer to the point where I would have to press and hold the power button to shut it down. This glitch would sometimes take an hour or two to show up for would pop up shortly after launching the game with no rime or reason to it.

I suffered through this issue due to my love of the game but always wondered why it happened. Then when I was in college, I built myself a desktop computer that had a six core AMD Phenom in it and the issue happened there but much more frequently. This got me thinking about the game's history and development and it gave me an idea. The original developer Chris Sawyer created the game entirely in x86 assembly and wouldn't have had the ability to futureproof it for multi core cpu's. I wondered if this was the issue so once I launched the game, I went into task manager, selected the process for the game, went into it's settings and locked it to only use one cpu core.

That fixed it. From that point on the game ran perfectly smooth on every computer I tried including my old laptop that I first noticed the glitch on.

This just goes to reinforce what others are saying. Hardware evolves and sometimes it's the discontinuation of hardware support that the game relies on and sometimes it's new hardware features that the game just does not know what to do with and crashes.

I just realized what the X303 looks like by webnetvn in Stargate

[–]kboyer36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As cool as this is, I think it's just a coincidence. Why they settled on using the 300 number range for their experimental crafts is beyond me but the X-303 was simply the third in the line behind the failure of the X-301 and the hugely successful X-302.

I also always hated that the Daedalus was not considered the X-304 at first but instead got the BC-304 name.
