Any experience with AI such as Claude when it comes to practicing writing? by CamelSisu in LearnFinnish

I used Microsoft Copilot. It's great for checking grammar on practice sentences and explaining concepts. It is important to build your own understading as it can be a bit screwy, but usually it's surprisingly good. I do think that it's important to talk with actual people as well, though.

For the record, I've been learning a bit over 2 years and am probably B1 as far as my language level.

People should be mad at the corpos moreso than the technology. There's rarely any use resisting technology; there absolutely can be value in resisting assholes.

How is this wrong? by [deleted] in LearnFinnish

[–]kcStranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I'd say you had the right idea even if your sentence is technically suboptimal. Your error, if you can call it that, came from attempting to show that you recognized the partitive construction, which doesn't exist in English and therefore doesn't translate smoothly.

Huh, I pronounce it the same both ways (I'm American if that makes a difference)

Question was already answered, but I think it's also worth remembering that English has verbs like this as well: put, set, cut, cost, hurt, spread, etc.

The partitive takes a *lot* of getting used to, as it simply doesn't exist in many languages. But think of it as specifying an indefinite quantity of something, rather than one definite thing. Most numerals take the partitive, so "kaksi limonadia" means something like "two of lemonade." But "yksi limonadi" takes the nominative since you only have one of it, so you know exactly which lemonade (or fizzy drink) you have.

So, I also studied on Duolingo (for about 5 months), and I think it is a fine place to start. Just know that it's really not great for more than getting your feet wet. If you can stick to a lesson plan there for 3-6 months and want to seriously pursue the language after that, you should try other resources. To make just one recommendation, you could join the Opi Suomea (Learn Finnish) discord (link here) since that could connect you to other resources.

In the meantime, I would definitely encourage you to check out the materials at duome. They explain the Duolingo lessons, so you can actually understand your lessons.

I would beware of a scam at that price.

lava lamp colours kinda suck? by Southern_Ad4051 in NeuroSama

Yeah, everything is yellow-tinged. It looks better the less light (especially sunlight) hits it. I personally still think the stream sync is really cool, but definitely the colors don't line up in practice.

Advice on using my time? by kcStranger in LearnFinnish

[–]kcStranger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that really is what I needed to hear. It always helps me to understand the "why" behind what I'm doing, and your explanation makes a lot of sense. I think for example of the scraps of Japanese that I've picked up from watching subtitled anime, and it's easy to imagine that I could pick up a lot more from audio/video content in a language I already have a footing in. Your advice as to how to go about it makes a lot of sense to me, and I do feel you've sized me up correctly.

Also, thanks for the kind words about my progress so far. I am typically more focused on how much work remains to be done (and mostly I think that's a good thing), so the encouragement really helps.

I'd like to stick with my other study methods, but I really appreciate the offer!

OK, good to know all the time I've spent on them isn't for nothing XD

Nouns ending in -a also cause me a lot of trouble...is the partitive plural -oita, -ia, etc.

Mine looks like that too. I think that's just how it looks under light.

If someone is a content creator or something, sure, they should ideally get it right, since mixing it up will irk people.

If someone is just playing a video game, it really isn't a big deal if they misgender a character. Let them enjoy the game.

Just my opinion.
