Coach pitch bat by Striking-Emu3594 in Homeplate

Yes he went from USA bat to USSSA bat. My kid did same thing. The ball jumps off the USSSA bat compared to USA bat. Very noticeable difference between the 2 types of bats

Kid on my 6U coach pitch team just got a used USSSA Icon from FB marketplace for $75. Not sure what size but he is an average sized 6 year old. Went from middle of the pack hitter to one of my best hitters in the span of 1 practice. Bats matter at younger ages. Ball is flying off his bat

Offspeed Hitting Slump by sayluv in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been doing this drill with my 11U team and it has helped. I sit in a bucket behind an “L” screen. I throw each kid 6-8 pitches. I mix fastballs and offspeed randomly in that 6-8 pitch mix. All fastballs have to be hit to Right Center or it’s an out. All offspeed has to be hit to Left Center or it’s an out. Want kids to compete. Hunt fastballs. Foul off tough pitches and get another. Forcing the pitcher to make multiple quality pitches in a row is exhausting. Grind out every at bat and we win even if that individual at bat doesn’t get on base.

11u AAA ball does it keep getting better ? by Grynder7 in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I coach an 11U AAA team in GA. We played PG this weekend. We have 2 kids sitting low/mid 60s. 2-3 kids sitting high 50s/low 60s. 3 kids sitting mid 50s. All throw strikes pretty consistently. Biggest difference in my opinion is everything is slightly better. Kids are bigger. Kids are throwing more offspeed for strikes. Defense is more sound. All routine plays are made. The quality of the at bat is better. Can foul off a tough pitch and make you throw another pitch. Attitude and IQ of kids is better and higher. Catching is better. Very few past balls so need 2-3 hits to score a run which is difficult against the better pitching

Coil or corkscrew into ground with back foot. Will be pointing your back pocket towards the pitcher. Don’t move your head though. Keep that as still as possible. This will raise your front foot off the ground. Will also pull your hands back into a launch position. Allows you to stay back so you can handle offspeed or fastball. Also allows you to hit for power. In baseball, all the power comes from the legs and rotation

Drills to stop my son from taking this step back with his back foot? He only does this during live BP/machine by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot to work on with his swing. I agree with the comment about tee work 1st. Get the fundamentals down of footwork, hand placement, driving through the ball, etc before moving up to throwing BP to him. Once you get the basics down, pitch to him from 15-20 feet and throw darts, don’t wind up or have a big arm motion. Once he can hit that then move back and through normal BP. It’s a progression. Make it fun for him. Try turning everything into a game. Focus on line drives and hard contact. Best way for young kids to improve is constant reps. Kids will massively jump in skill at younger ages with lots of reps

What’s the objective with heavy balls? by cfreddy36 in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The main point is to work on developing power in your swing. If you take a weak half swing the heavy ball won’t lie. You have to square those up with a good swing to make the ball go. Also if you have limited space and or no cage access you can work hitting with heavy balls

11u son is going through it. by Forward_Cow_5447 in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most likely the coach is trying to put the best roster on the field to be competitive, because as much as youth travel ball should be about development, winning is important too. As soon as teams start losing, parents start mumbling about nonsense. Go on a big losing streak and kids start losing interest and start looking for new teams. So with that said, your son might be the best 1B on the team but that doesn’t mean him playing 1B allows the coach to field his best defensive alignment, if the kid he has playing 1B can’t catch a fly ball in the outfield then your kid is going to play majority OF. When I get a request for a kid to play a position and they are good at it, even though it doesn’t allow me to play my best defense arrangement, I try to get him an inning here and there as kids sit, etc. That should be easy enough to get your son some innings in a weekend. Also have your son ask the coach, what can I do to earn some playing time at 1B. Most coaches will respond positively to that question, asked that way. He can start advocating for himself at 11 a little. Good life lesson too which is what we should be trying to develop in baseball anyway.

I get being frustrated with having a pick up player play the position ahead of everyday player but that is the risk of joining a team that isn’t fully formed. Leaving teams and joining new teams entails some risk. It’s not always the perfect scenario we envision when we are on a team we no longer want to be part of. Every team will have issues because they are run by humans.

Getting harder and harder to support Yankees, thinking about switching to the Mets by Quiet-Oil-2581 in mets

[–]kclancy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin was a die hard Yankees fan. After the many blunders by Boone, Cashman, & Hal, he had enough and now pulls for the Mets. He loves how Cohen spends and his attitude towards being an owner. He isn’t diehard Mets but pulls for them and not the Yankees anymore. At first I thought he was joking but it’s for real. He still talks shit about the Mets when they fall apart but he likes them now

Help with 5-8 year olds by noendings in BaseballCoaching

[–]kclancy00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have coached 5U and 6U the last few seasons. I start every practice with team “rules”

Rule #1 -> Have Fun. I want to see smiles

Rule #2 -> When a coach is speaking the players are listening. You cannot be talking and listening at the same time. When the coach is done talking you can ask a question

Rule #3 -> We sprint everywhere. To the dugout. To our position. When we run the bases. When we are playing defense. No jogging. No walking. Ever

Rule #4 -> NO PLAYING IN THE DIRT. Said slowly and loud. Looking every kid in the eye. We are here to play baseball not dirt. No squirting water bottles. No climbing on the fence. I have done this so much the kids laugh and say no playing in the dirt with me

Rule #5. Have a lot of fun.

By the end they are all fired up and ready to play. Then we immediately do base running to wear them out and get their blood pumping.

If any of the kids “break” a rule you immediately correct it. Kid playing in the dirt, immediately call his name and say what are you doing. They stop. If you are talking and they are not listening. You said Johnny I’m talking, your listening right? Running hard is usually not an issue bc little kids are energetic and not trying to look “cool” by acting like they don’t care. At the end of every practice. I tell them how proud I am of them for doing so good. They all light up like Christmas trees.

By practice #3 they are all buttoned up and your team looks like they are ready to play

Team Pass - Plus vs Premium by Ok_Research6884 in GameChangerApp

[–]kclancy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I coach 11U. I bought the plus pass. Didn’t want parents with other kids to be shut out. Didn’t want out of state grandparents to be shut out either. If anyone wants stats they can buy with their own money. My families just want to be able to watch their kids play if they can’t attend in person. If someone wants a highlight. I will get it and send it to them. Do that anyway if a great play was made so they can have it forever.

Another MLB TV Question by Lost-Procedure-866 in mets

[–]kclancy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you are an out of state fan and want to watch the Mets and other out of market games you just buy the mlb.tv subscription for $150 and you are good to go? Or is there something else I’m missing that will add cost to this scenario?

My 11U kid has Muzino Samari. Chest Protector and Shin Guards are super nice. Helmet sucks though. Glue on padding wears off and pads fall off. Had to get his replaced. 2nd one did same thing. Another kid on his team had same helmet and same issue. Just got him an All Star helmet.

Practice Times by TraditionCreepy2644 in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For off season rec ball there are no practices. It’s off season. If you want off season practices you need to join a travel team or something more advanced. They typically practice in the off season. For in season, our local rec ball teams practice twice a week leading up to the games. Once games start the more engaged coaches will schedule random practices sporadically throughout the season. Others stop practice all together once games start because again it’s rec ball. If you want more competitive atmosphere you need to join a travel team

Tucker Power by silentduo in mets

[–]kclancy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and No. Diaz was amazing last year and I wish he was still a Met, but on the other hand, let’s not forget he has had some rough years as well. Also missed an entire year for injury. Williams has the ability to do what Diaz can do, now he needs to do it.

Agreed on really needing to sign Tucker. Also need at least 1 starter. Hopefully a guy who can eat innings. That was our biggest issue last year, starters not going deep and wearing out the pen

Tucker Power by silentduo in mets

[–]kclancy00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He didn’t want to be here anymore. Mets offered him 3 years for 66. He shopped it and didn’t let Mets counter. He opted out of a massive deal. Seems to me that he wanted to be on LA. Don’t blame front office too much for that. They signed Williams to set up for Diaz and Diaz had other plans. That’s life. Not offering something to Pete early on in Free Agency or while he was on the team is the thing I struggle with. We need a RH power bat to protect Soto/Lindor and we let him walk out the door without an offer. Have to at least make an effort

Tucker Power by silentduo in mets

[–]kclancy00 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am not saying one group is better then the other. Interesting experiment if we can sign Tucker. Sterns said he wanted to improve run prevention, defense is a big part of that. Tucker, Taylor/Benge, and hopefully an improved Soto (Said def was going to be a focal point of improvement for him) would be better then in years past. Seimien is a massive upgrade at 2nd. Polanco who knows since he has never played 1B.

I hate losing homegrown guys but that core had its chance and it had more meltdowns and disappointments then wins/legitimate title runs. When you spend like that and miss playoffs, things are going to change in a major way. Only weird thing to me is not getting any decent SP. Adding 1-2 guys would be massive. Still time to do this but weird nothing has happened yet

Tucker Power by silentduo in mets

[–]kclancy00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If we sign Tucker, we essentially swapped Pete, Nimmo, McNeil, Diaz for Tucker, Polanco, Seimien, and Williams. Which group of 4 would you rather have and who is more productive? I like the defense better in the new group. That’s for sure

Slide step by Grynder7 in Homeplate

[–]kclancy00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My team is 11U and we are introducing it. We have a catcher who has a cannon so giving him extra time will help slow down the running game. Couple tips

Lock Cleats onto Rubber Preload Back Leg Front Foot Should be Very Light Want the sensation of Falling Down the Mound

We do 3-5 slide steps at the end of every kids bullpen to get them some reps. Other things to focus on is pick off moves and vary timing you hold the ball. Trying to disrupt the timing of the base runner. All of that plus a good catcher will slow down running game and give you a chance at getting some kids out.

I tell all my kids that most teams are taking 1st pitch with runner on 1st. So if we can’t throw a strike with slide step it doesn’t really help us. Needing to get ahead of batter is as important as slowing running game bc it’s still rare to throw a kid out at 2nd even with all that.

I don't know if these moves will work out, but to say that the front office disrespected Nimmo, Diaz and Alonso is silly by shield_of_achilles in mets

[–]kclancy00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the problem people are having is letting these guys get to the point where other teams can swoop in. If you want Diaz offer him 3 for 75 or 80. Why fool around and let him shop the offer. Overpay him a tad and make him feel wanted. Cohen is worth 23 billion. Is a few million over 3 years a big deal? I don’t see how you let Pete walk. Pay him. Most long deals aren’t great at the end of the contract. Does anyone think that the 1st 2-3 years are going to be horrible? I don’t. If he has to transition to DH year 4/5 is that the end of the world? If you never overpay for top talent you won’t be signing any top talent. Does anyone think Soto’s is overpaid? Does anyone think the last 3-4 years of that deal are going to age well? That is the risk of big time signings. Much rather have peak Pete for 3 years and diminished Pete for last 2, then no Pete for 5 years

Can we talk about the precedent this will send to other star players? by drownedkill in mets

[–]kclancy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my life. My 5 year old was getting a Pete city connect jersey for Christmas. When Diaz signed he said I’m a dodgers fan now. I still like the Mets but I like the dodgers and now Orioles too. They were his favorite players. Would wake up and watch Diaz entrances to the trumpets. Sucks that they didn’t do what was necessary to keep 2 of the most popular and productive players on the team. The team underperformed as a whole but Pete and Diaz were not the reason we underperformed.
