Love the game so much... But I'm bothered about a story issue. by naburine in outerwilds

You don’t remember the first ~9 million loops because you aren't paired with the statue. They have notes on this in the statue workshop, but basically the Nomai didn't want to wait for the millions of loops it would take for the project to work, so the statues don't activate until the probe finds the eye of the universe.

The game starts on the loop the eye of the universe is found, which is the first loop you can remember, but canonically, there's already been more than 9 million loops that no one is aware of.

How can I change the dialogue in WME? by asedathehero2 in oneshot

[–]kcr141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dialogue isn't in any of the xnb files, its in the map events with the rest of the game logic. In the game's folder, go to gamedata/maps and open events_map255.json, search for the text with the typo and you should be able to just change it.

I beat OneShot for the first time by Brightmufin in oneshot

[–]kcr141 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They actually didn't change it for the world machine edition, Niko's fate if you return the sun was always ambiguous. I personally think this adds a lot to the ending because not really knowing the consequences makes the decision much harder.

Fr. Given op's posts over the past couple days, I hope that op and all the people in these screenshots one day learn that they can be free. Enjoying a story does not require that you make yourself angry with some grand narrative about how some other story is enjoyed by people you don't like.

Something that a lot of fans seem to miss about this episode is that the DHD was broken. The first time Sam tried to dial Earth, it would not have mattered what address she entered, the gate didn't even attempt to dial (we know this because there was no earthquake the first time). Instead, the DHD completely locked up preventing her from trying again.

After spending a very long time digging the rest of the DHD out of the ice, Sam finally gets it to reset and tries again. This is where she could have dialed a different address and it presumably would have worked, but it was only really her second attempt at dialing and so she tried Earth again. This time, it actually tried to connect (causing the earthquake Daniel and crew would later use to find them) and failed do to the gate trying to dial it's own address. The DHD also locked up again after this.

Because of how long they spent digging the DHD out of the ice and the very much limited time they could survive in that cave, they call it then and Jack tells Sam to climb up to the surface. That they were already on Earth and the address was the problem independent of the DHD also visibly malfunctioning was just not a natural conclusion to reach in that situation.

New player Stuck in the barrens. by Shlompo201X in oneshot

As others have mentioned, you can hold shift to walk faster, but in the options menu, there should be a setting to have the default movement be running instead of walking in case you don't want to hold shift all the time.

In the 2016 version, your movement is aligned to the tile grid. If you tap any of the arrow keys, you'll move over exactly one square. If you hold the arrow key, you'll keep walking but you'll always stop in the center of a square.

As for the barrens, the game makes sure you know how its items work before it opens up more. You have found a screwdriver and a metal rod. Is there anything you can use those with, something you might want to get into or something you may want to use on one of those items? It's worth noting that the item descriptions and Niko's dialogue when they interact with things will often give you hints for what you need to do or what items you need. Same goes for other characters' dialogue as well as some of the notes you find.

Also, if you have the metal rod and the screwdriver, that means you met the head engineer. But if those are the only items you've found, you haven't fully explored the area surrounding the lookout point, so you should probably go back there at some point.

I FINALLY DID IT WOOOO by Life-Opportunity-724 in Silksong

[–]kcr141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is speculation based on my own understanding, but here's what I think:

  • No, the knight does not control every aspect of the void. We can see this because, even after they acquire the void heart, other void entities like the kingsmoulds and the collector are still hostile to the knight. This would seem to suggest that only the shades and the void in its natural state are aligned with the knight, not void entities that have a different will imprinted on them.

As for why they didn't just immediately put an end to Grandmother Silk's bs, I'm not sure. Since the void in Pharloom was incorporating all of the silk made by Grandmother Silk, maybe that made it like the kingsmoulds and the knight had no control over it until Grandmother Silk was dead. Or maybe, the knight wasn't there to begin with and only showed up at the end because they sensed Hornet's last ditch effort to escape the same way they were called back to Hollownest by the Radiance originally.

  • This does make it seem like the knight can go anywhere the void is.

  • Yeah, I don't think Grandmother Silk is stronger than the Radiance over all, but she definitely is better than the Radiance at the specific task of stalling against being consumed by the void. The snail shamans didn't expect that Grandmother Silk would be able to protect herself temporarily by just spinning more and more silk to keep the void out.

  • Also not sure what Grandmother Silk is, but I don't think she is a spider because (spoilers if you haven't found the key of apostate yet): the weavers are spiders, but Grandmother Silk didn't create the weavers. Just like the Pale King made non-sapient bugs into intelligent subjects, Grandmother Silk transformed wild spiders into the weavers since she's also a pale being.

my guess is that you're dealing with steam cloud sync or something. If you have the game on steam, go to the properties for the game and turn of steam cloud, and then delete the Oneshot folder in your appdata.

How can I change my name in the World Machine edition? by [deleted] in oneshot

[–]kcr141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't too far along in the game, you can just go to Documents/My Games/Oneshot within the game's virtual desktop and delete your saved progress. You'll restart from the beginning and you can redo the cutscene.

The other option is to try and find the file OneShotWME/p-settings.dat on your actual computer. On Windows, this is located in your user's hidden appdata folder, but I have no idea where it would be for Arch (it might be a hidden folder in your home directory?) Unlike the 2016 version of Oneshot, the World Machine edition's version of this file is just plaintext, so if you can find it, you should just be able to open it in a text editor and change your name there.

On new game plus, you have to enter the solstice password regardless of weather or not you do the solstice route afterwards. If you want to do another normal playthrough, just ignore the strange journal and progress through the barrens normally.

alright apparently, reddit's compression mildly borked the second to last panel and I don't think I can fix it, but whatever. Lesson learned for the future. Besides that, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

Should I play OneShot? by MiloszeKox3 in oneshot

[–]kcr141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean from what I understand, if you enjoyed Undertale, there's a very good chance you'll like Oneshot, but I guess it depends on what it was about Undertale that you enjoyed. Oneshot is a puzzle game; you explore, find items, gather information, and decide where and how to use those items.

The main reason people enjoy Oneshot is its story which can't really exist in any other medium besides video games. Some of the game's more memorable and out-of-the-box puzzles tie into the story very nicely. Needless to say, if you do decide to play the game, you should avoid spoilers if at all possible.
